Accurate Extraction of Noise Source Impedance of an SMPS Under Operating Conditions

An accurate measurement method to extract the common mode (CM) and the differential mode (DM) noise source impedances of a switched mode power supply (SMPS) under its operating condition is developed and validated. With a proper pre-measurement calibration process, the proposed method allows extraction of both the CM and the DM noise source impedances with very good accuracy. These noise source impedances come in handy to design an electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter for a SMPS systematically with minimum hassl

Systematic Electromagnetic Interference Filter Design Based on Information From In-Circuit Impedance Measurements

Based on a two-probe measurement approach, the noise source and noise termination impedances of a switched-mode power supply (SMPS) under its normal operating condition are measured. With the accurate noise source and noise termination impedances, an electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter can be optimally designe

This paper reports about a project for the creation of an innovative university course devoted to the preparation of future electronic designers to the challenges imposed by the assurance of the electrical performance of high-speed electronic systems. The target groups are future university teaching staff and future electronic systems designers. Activities are developed by means of sharing research results, seminars, experience exchange and the development of demonstrators to be used for teaching. The partnership is composed by Technical University of Turin (Italy), University of Hannover (Germany), University of Nottingham (UK), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and King Monguts Institute of Technology Lad-krabang, Bangkok (Thailand). The program is partially funded by the European Commission under the ASEAN-EU University Network Programme (AUNP) and its duration is 24 months

Assessment of EMI chokes under realistic loading conditions

A novel measurement method has been developed to characterize the common-mode (CM) and differential-mode (DM) impedances of power line EMI chokes under realistic loading conditions. With a proper pre-measurement calibration process, all parasitic effects in the measurement setup can be eliminated. The measurement allows designer to assess the EMI suppression performance of these chokes with reasonable accuracy under various loading conditions. With the measurement results, a proper choke with optimum EMI suppression performance could be selected for a specific loading condition.Published versio

Photovoltaic (PV) systems have become popular as one of the renewable energy sources in recent years. With increasing number of PV systems, potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues from the PV systems cannot be ignored. In order to evaluate the EMI potential of a PV system, an in-circuit measurement method to extract its equivalent common-mode and differential-mode noise source models is described and validated. These noise source models serve as black boxes for further EMI analyses.Accepted versio

The two current probes measurement method was employed by other researchers to measure the radio-frequency impedance of ac power mains. In this paper, with a modified measurement setup, the method is extended to measure the common-mode (CM) impedance of a CM choke under in-circuit condition. With a premeasurement characterization process, the effect of the measurement setup can be determined and eliminated. The proposed measurement provides a more realistic assessment of the CM impedance characteristic of any CM choke under actual operating condition.Published versio
