    The Terceira Rift, Azores: a melt inclusion study of submarine lavas

    The Azores plateau, a bathymetric high, is seated on an anomalous mantle domain located in the Azores Triple Junction where the American, EUR and AFR lithospheric plates meet. The cause for these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [3]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [2]. The Terceira Rift (TR) defines the EUR/AFR plate boundary of the Azores triple junction. The TR is a 550 km long, generally ESE trending line of volcanic massifs along the axis (e.g. SĂŁo Miguel, D. JoĂŁo de Castro, Terceira and Graciosa) alternating with deep basins (e.g. Hirondelle basin) interpreted as volcanically unfilled rift valley segments [3]. Vesicular, porphyritic basalts were sampled along the Terceira Rift during Portuguese scientific cruises (EMEPC 2007-2009). Initial studies focused on the adjacent areas Don JoĂŁo de Castro - DJC (submarine volcano) and Hirondelle - Hir (basin). Major and trace element data of phenocrysts (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase), groundmass and exposed melt inclusions found in these vesicular lavas depict only slight differences between the two sites. DJC samples depict higher Fo and Mg# in olivine and clinopyroxene, respectively. Chondrite-normalized REE data indicate that groundmass material is LREE-enriched in both Hir and DJC lavas. Exposed melt inclusions (MI) show similar REE patterns compared to their hosts. Clinopyroxene in both sites display L-MREE enriched, HREE depleted sinusoidal patterns. MI were found in olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts. MI are glassy to completely opaque and devitrified, with one or more bubbles, and sulfide globules (SG). SG are spherical, depict two-phase lamellar intergrowths of Fe-Ni and Cu-Fe phases, and are ubiquitous in DJC and Hir lava samples. Some lavas display SG within clinopyroxene-hosted MI and dispersed in the groundmass. Preliminary data suggest that lavas found in these areas of the Terceira Rift were sulfur-saturated in different stages of their evolution; during early fractionation and prior to eruption. This provides an striking example of a soliton which cannot be trapped and only survives to the action of a weak potential

    Peer presence increases the prosocial behavior of adolescents by speeding the evaluation of outcomes for others

    Peer presence can elicit maladaptive adolescent decision-making, potentially by increasing sensitivity to the rewards one receives. It remains unknown whether peer presence also increases adolescents’ sensitivity to others’ outcomes, which could have an adaptive effect in contexts allowing pro-social behaviors. Here, we combine social utility modeling and real-time decision process modeling to characterize how peer presence alters adolescents’ processing of self and other outcomes. We found that adolescents behaved selfishly when privately allocating monetary rewards for themselves and a peer in an incentive-compatible task. In peer presence, however, adolescents became more altruistic. Real-time decision process estimates collected using computer mouse tracking showed that altruistic behavior was associated with relatively earlier influence of peer-outcomes relative to self-outcomes, and that peer presence sped the influence of peer-outcomes without altering the time at which self-outcomes began to influence the decision process. Our results indicate a mechanism through which peer presence prompts greater prosocial behavior by altering how adolescents process prosocial outcomes

    An Interaction between the Walker A and D-loop Motifs Is Critical to ATP Hydrolysis and Cooperativity in Bacteriophage T4 Rad50

    The ATP binding cassette (ABC) proteins make up a large superfamily with members coming from all kingdoms. The functional form of the ABC protein nucleotide binding domain (NBD) is dimeric with ATP binding sites shared between subunits. The NBD is defined by six motifs: the Walker A, Q-loop, Signature, Walker-B, D-loop, and H-loop. The D-loop contains a conserved aspartate whose function is not clear but has been proposed to be involved in cross-talk between ATP binding sites. Structures of various ABC proteins suggest an interaction between the D-loop aspartate and an asparagine residue located in Walker A loop of the opposing subunit. Here, we evaluate the functional role of the D-loop using a bacteriophage T4 ABC protein, Rad50 (gp46). Mutation of either the D-loop aspartate or the Walker A asparagine results in dramatic reductions in ATP affinity, hydrolysis rate, and cooperativity. The mutant proteins bind Mre11 (gp47) and DNA normally, but no longer support the ATP-dependent nuclease activities of Mre11. We propose that the D-loop aspartate functions to stabilize the Walker A asparagine in a position favorable for catalysis. We find that the asparagine is crucially important to the mechanism of ATP hydrolysis by increasing the affinity for ATP and positioning the Îł-phosphate of ATP for catalysis. Additionally, we propose that the asparagine acts as a Îł-phosphate sensor and, through its interaction with the conserved D-loop aspartate, transmits conformational changes across the dimer interface to the second ATP binding site

    Resource Flows Among Three Generations in Guatemala Study (2007–08): Definitions, tracking, data collection, coverage, and attrition

    The allocation of resources across generations and the consequences of these allocations represent a research agenda with significant policy implications. At the same time, their empirical investigation imposes immense data requirements, and therefore data collection challenges. In this paper, we describe how we met these challenges, in the Resource Flows Among Three Generations in Guatemala Study, or IGT, carried out in 2006–07. In doing so, we provide a guide for using and interpreting the data collected as part of IGT, as well as an example for others interested in implementing research projects on similar themes elsewhere. Complex research topics, across generations and across a range of possible measures of well-being, led to a relatively complicated sample selection process and survey design, with component modules that were applicable to different “types” of sample members, depending on their generational status and age, and who often lived in different locations. It also led to a wide set of survey domains, ranging from economic, educational, and psychological surveys to clinical medical exams for both the young and the elderly. Survey coverage was above 85% of the targeted sample for most categories of respondents and most modules, and a number of safeguards were in place to ensure high quality data. Biases due to attrition, measured against the original 1970s rounds of survey work upon which IGT built, while present, should not reduce substantially the validity of research findings to come from this rich sample. The extent to which this is true, though, may vary depending on the topic under consideration and the controls included in the analyses.

    Craniocervical Junction Syndrome: Anatomy of the Craniocervical and Atlantoaxial Junctions and the Effect of Misalignment on Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow

    The craniocervical junction (CCJ) is comprised of the inferior surface of the skull, the atlas and axis, as well as muscles and connective tissues that attach the skull to the cervical spine. The CCJ encloses the central nervous system (CNS), encephalic vasculature and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system. The CCJ spans the brainstem to the spinal cord, including the vascular system as well as connecting the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cisterns within the skull to the CSF channels in the spinal canal. Malformation and misalignment of the craniocervical junction can cause a constellation of cerebral and other neurological signs and symptoms collectively called craniocervical syndrome (CCS). The signs and symptoms of craniocervical junction syndrome may be due to mechanical strain causing deformation of dura mater, vasculature and other structures of the cranial vault resulting in irritation of and dysfunction of affected tissues. Deformation of the CCJ may also obstruct blood and CSF flow. Chronic ischemia, edema and hydrocephalus can cause degenerative cascades that can in turn lead to neurodegenerative diseases
