Single/Few Bunch Space Charge Effects at 8-GeV in the Fermilab Main Injector
For Project X, it is planned to inject a beam of 3x10**11 particles per bunch
into the Main Injector. Therefore, at 8-GeV, there will be increased space
charge tune shifts and an increased incoherent tune spread. In preparation for
these higher intensity bunches exploratory studies have commenced looking at
the transmission of different intensity bunches at different tunes. An
experiment is described with results for bunch intensities between 20 and 300
10**9 particles. To achieve the highest intensity bunches coalescing at 8-GeV
is required, resulting in a longer bunch length. Comparisons show that similar
transmission curves are obtained when the intensity and bunch length have
increased by factors of 3.2 and 3.4 respectively, indicating the incoherent
tune shifts are similar, as expected from theory. The results of these
experiments will be used in conjugation with simulations to further study high

Local and global statistical distances are equivalent on pure states
The statistical distance between pure quantum states is obtained by finding a
measurement that is optimal in a sense defined by Wootters. As such, one may
expect that the statistical distance will turn out to be different if the set
of possible measurements is restricted in some way. It nonetheless turns out
that if the restriction is to local operations and classical communication
(LOCC) on any multipartite system, then the statistical distance is the same as
it is without restriction, being equal to the angle between the states in

6 Batch Injection and Slipped Beam Tune Measurements in Fermilab's Main Injector
During Nova operations it is planned to run the Fermilab Recycler in a 12
batch slip stacking mode. In preparation for this, measurements of the tune
during a six batch injection and then as the beam is slipped by changing the RF
frequency, but without a 7th injection, have been carried out in the Main
Injector. The coherent tune shifts due to the changing beam intensity were
measured and compared well with the theoretically expected tune shift. The tune
shifts due to changing RF frequency, required for slip stacking, also compare
well with the linear theory, although some nonlinear affects are apparent at
large frequency changes. These results give us confidence that the expected
tunes shifts during 12 batch slip stacking Recycler operations can be

Optimizing local protocols implementing nonlocal quantum gates
We present a method of optimizing recently designed protocols for
implementing an arbitrary nonlocal unitary gate acting on a bipartite system.
These protocols use only local operations and classical communication with the
assistance of entanglement, and are deterministic while also being "one-shot",
in that they use only one copy of an entangled resource state. The optimization
is in the sense of minimizing the amount of entanglement used, and it is often
the case that less entanglement is needed than with an alternative protocol

Neuropsychological and functional outcomes in recent-onset major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: a longitudinal cohort study
Functional disability is the lead contributor to burden of mental illness. Cognitive deficits frequently limit functional recovery, although whether changes in cognition and disability are longitudinally associated in recent-onset individuals remains unclear. Using a prospective, cohort design, 311 patients were recruited and assessed at baseline. One hundred and sixty-seven patients met eligibility criteria (M = 21.5 years old, s.d. = 4.8) and returned for follow-up (M = 20.6 months later, s.d. = 7.8). Two-hundred and thirty participants were included in the final analysis, comprising clinically stable patients with major depression (n = 71), bipolar disorder (BD; n = 61), schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (n = 35) and 63 healthy controls. Neuropsychological functioning and self-rated functional disability were examined using mixed-design, repeated-measures analysis, across diagnoses and cognitive clusters, covarying for relevant confounds. Clinical, neuropsychological and functional changes did not differ between diagnoses (all P40.05). Three reliable neuropsychological subgroups emerged through cluster analysis, characterized by psychomotor slowing, improved sustained attention, and improved verbal memory. Controlling for diagnosis and changes in residual symptoms, clusters with improved neuropsychological functioning observed greater reductions in functional disability than the psychomotor slowing cluster, which instead demonstrated a worsening in disability (Po0.01). Improved sustained attention was independently associated with greater likelihood of follow-up employment (Po0.01). Diagnosis of BD uniquely predicted both follow-up employment and independent living. Neuropsychological course appears to be independently predictive of subjective and objective functional outcomes. Importantly, cognitive phenotypes may reflect distinct pathophysiologies shared across major psychiatric conditions, and be ideal targets for personalized early intervention
