Discovering the power of emotional intelligence and organizational identification in creating internal market-oriented supervision
Employees are better equipped to provide exceptional service when they are appropriately provided for and understand the company’s value proposition (Berry and Parasuraman, 1991). Internal market- orientation (IMO) pertains to a specific workplace environment that fosters employees who are trained and believe in the value offered by the company. Such support and development translates into higher quality service employees interacting with customers and their products (Lings, 2004). Linkages between IMO, emotional intelligence (EI) and organizational identification (OI) are evaluated within a supply chain and logistics context. Results indicate the direct influence of OI on IMO, and a supervisor’s ability to help employees manage emotions mediates the relationship between the ability of a supervisor to self-manage emotions and his or her propensity to create an internal market-orientation. An internal market-orientation is beneficial to the customer experience, and ultimately benefits the firm
Gully and Stream Bank Toolbox. A technical guide for gully and stream bank erosion control programs in Great Barrier Reef catchments
This Toolbox is a guide to targeting, designing and implementing gully and stream bank erosion control activities in Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments. This third edition builds on 7 years of implementing these activities in multiple programs and it aims to inform the ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of fine sediment and associated nutrients delivered to the GBR lagoon. Sub‑soil erosion, predominantly from gullies and stream banks, contributes the vast bulk of the fine sediment load delivered to the GBR. The large area and extensive erosion in GBR catchments, and the limited resources available, make it important for erosion control to be targeted to cost‑effective sites and implemented using best practice based on best available information. Landholder support and site maintenance increase the likelihood that sediment reductions will persist over the long term
Commentary: Essential Programs and Services Model
To further discussion about the Essential Programs and Services (EPS) model for funding public education in Maine, Maine Policy Review asked eight superintendents—representing districts across the state— to provide their views. We also asked each to discuss the needs of his district and whether additional state policy options were necessary to tackle the most pressing issues. The districts represented by these superintendents are a cross section of urban and rural high-receivers and low-receivers. Still, several commonalities emerge: the need for a state commitment that does not wax and wane with the business cycle; the urgency of professional development for new and experienced teachers; and, the importance of linking student outcomes with student assessment measures and student funding. In short, EPS is not seen as a solution to the state’s ongoing debate over public-education funding, but is recognized as a necessary first step

Performativity and primary teacher relations
A performativity discourse currently pervades teachers' work. It is a discourse that relies on teachers and schools instituting self-disciplinary measures to satisfy newly transparent public accountability and it operates alongside a market discourse. The introduction of the performativity discourse has affected teacher relations at three levels of professional work: with students, colleagues and local advisor/inspectors. Ethnographic research with primary teachers - which focused on their experience of Ofsted inspections in six schools over periods of up to four years - is the source of this paper. The paper argues that a humanist discourse prevalent in teacher relations with students, colleagues and advisor/inspectors has been challenged by a performativity discourse that: distances teachers from students and creates a dependency culture in opposition to previous mutual and intimate relations; creates self disciplining teams that marginalize individuality and stratifies collegial relations in opposition to previous relations where primary teachers sought consensus; and creates subjugatory, contrived and de-personalized relations between local advisors/inspectors in preference to previous partnership relations. The paper concludes that the change in relations is an indicator of fundamental change to social relations but that primary teachers are in a good position to influence the performativity discourse, albeit it a struggle, by reconstituting it through the maintenance of humanist relations
