Towards Measles elimination
In many European countries measles is still a cause of great public health concern. Outbreaks of the disease are still occurring because the degree of vaccination coverage required to interrupt transmission has not yet been achieved. Many countries have started to implement measles elimination strategies. These are primarily based on attaining a very high coverage of measles vaccination and strengthening measles surveillance systems.peer-reviewe
Gender influence on career progression to leadership for Maltese Female Nursing Managers
Aim: The aim of this study is to explore what gender issues hamper the career progression of Charge Nurses and Deputy Charge Nurses to leadership positions in the Maltese State Healthcare System. Background: Women are underrepresented in headship positions in the Maltese state healthcare industry. Although the literature strongly indicates that gender barriers are well known to contribute to this anomaly as they have an impact on the career advancement of women worldwide, there is no knowledge as to which gender barriers are causing their underrepresentation in top leadership roles in a Maltese context. With a focus on three main overarching gender barriers: Governmental and Socio-cultural barriers, Organisational barriers, and Personal barriers, female Charge Nurses and Deputy Charge Nurses are investigated to identify those gender barriers that persist in holding for them an unbreakable glass ceiling.Design: This study follows an Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods design. A survey was conducted across the entire state healthcare organisation involving the total population of female Charge/Deputy Charge Nurses. The design of the questionnaire was based on a conceptual model developed from the literature review. The survey was followed by one-on-one interviews with a purposive sample from the surveyed population.Method: Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 77.3%. Quantitative analysis was undertaken using a SPSS package. Results from the quantitative phase were further examined by interviewing eight respondents. Interviews were thematically analysed. Results: Socio-cultural, organisational and personal barriers influence the career progression of Charge and Deputy Charge Nurses. Work-family balance emerged as the toughest obstacle for the managers. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the conceptual model was reviewed to present the contemporary glass ceiling that impact the career progression of first-line female managers
The next step in housing profiling
The number of applicants for social housing in Malta has seen a considerable reduction in recent years, with the waiting list decreasing by 42% since 2017 (Times of Malta, 2021). Nonetheless, the latest available data indicate that there are still 3,382 individuals who have applied for social housing (The Malta Independent, 2021). A recent study by Marmarà and Brown (2021) engaged in an exercise to socially profile such housing applicants, revealing the prevalent sociodemographic characteristics of individuals in need of social housing. The results of this social profiling exercise provide useful data which enable policymakers to obtain an understanding of the socio-demographics of social housing applicants.non peer-reviewe
The confirmed occurrence of Schedophilus medusophagus (Cocco, 1839) and Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus, 1758 in Maltese waters, central Mediterranean Sea
Specimens of two uncommon fish species, Schedophilus medusophagus and Petromyzon marinus, were recently collected in nearshore waters off the island of Malta in the central Mediterranean. Several morphological and biological parameters for the specimens are described. The findings ascertain the occurrence of the two species in the area and corroborate furthermore the substantial contribution to wildlife sightings made through social media and by citizen scientists, thus further increasing knowledge on Mediterranean biodiversity.peer-reviewe
The seventh national communication of Malta under the United Nations framework convention on climate change
This is the fourth time that Malta is submitting a National Communication under the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), following the submission of a First National
Communication in 2004 and a Second National Communication in 2010. This is also the second
time that Malta is submitting such a Communication since its accession to Annex I status under
the Convention, the first two submissions having been made as a non-Annex I Party.
Emission reduction or limitation commitments applicable to Malta
Malta’s status under the Convention up to the time it applied for accession to Annex I, and with
that accession being conditional to not taking on quantified emission limitation or reduction
targets for the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, meant that until 2012 Malta was not
subject to an economy-wide greenhouse gas related obligation under the Protocol. This however
did not mean that Malta had no obligations to limit or reduce emissions from anthropogenic
activities taking place in the country.
In line with, Malta will be contributing its fair share of the EU’s unconditional commitment under
the Convention to reduce emissions by 20% below 1990 levels by 2020. This is in line with the target
inscribed in the amendments to the Kyoto Protocol (the Doha Amendments), that will be jointly
fulfilling the second commitment period with the other Union member states; therefore, emissions
from the aforementioned power plants remain subject to compliance with EU Emissions Trading
Scheme provisions, while the Effort-Sharing Decision target is the principal emissions mitigation
obligation that the country has until 2020, for all other greenhouse gas emissions.
The major point sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Malta, namely the electricity generation
plants have been, since of 2005, subject to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, whereby they are
required to surrender allowances in respect of emissions of carbon dioxide. Emissions of
greenhouse gases not covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, are subject to an overall limit
under the so-called Effort-Sharing Decision. Under this decision, Malta must limit such greenhouse
gases to not more than 5% over emission levels in 2005, by 2020.
The EU is already looking towards the longer-term future, with the 2030 climate and energy
framework providing for a 40% domestic reduction target for 2030. Legislative implementation of
this goal is currently under discussion at EU level.peer-reviewe

Current distribution of two species of Tylos (Isopoda: Oniscidea) in the Central Mediterranean and the influence of beach sand grain-size parameters
The first confirmed record of the Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 (Decapoda, Brachyura) from Maltese waters
The invasive portunid species Callinectes sapidus is hereby recorded for the first time from Maltese waters, thus updating the known distribution of this decapod of Atlantic origin within the Mediterranean. Potential introduction pathways of the species to Maltese waters are discussed.peer-reviewe
