Although much has been written about Standard Mongolian and Mongolian languages, relatively little attention has been given to their relationship to neighboring languages, particularly those belonging to the Turkic group. The following few lines are intended as a minor contribution to filling the void and to honor Professor Ozawa on his seventieth birthday

Left and Right: Investigating a Scientific Claim

It has long been known in the field of neurophysiology that specific activities are controlled in specific parts of the brain. It has been furthermore widely believed that the brain\u27s left hemisphere is the main, if not exclusive, language center, controlling such activities as speech and writing with the right hand, while the right hemisphere controls such activities as smell, spatial construction, and nonverbal ideation. However, this article concludes that the claim of a universal dichotomy of right/wrong in languages is false and that these allegedly universal connotations are not present in the languages of East and Central Asia

Chinese Policies Towards Minorities: An Essay and Documents by Henry G. Schwarz: Over the past several years, I have been surprised by the lack of knowledge of Communist Chinese policies toward minorities on the part of otherwise well prepared graduate students beginning to specialize in contemporary China. To help remedy this regrettable state of affairs, I offer this collection of documents and introductory essay in the hope that it will provide a handy reference tool and a starting point from which a novice may strike out for detailed investigations of China\u27s minorities. The essay does not pretend to offer a full-scale analysis of Chinese policies toward minorities. It does attempt, however, to give a general introduction to the problem of China\u27s minorities and to focus on some of the objectives and results of China\u27s policies, as presented in the documents.https://cedar.wwu.edu/easpress/1024/thumbnail.jp

The Minorities of Northern China: a survey, by Henry G. Schwarz. This book contains a survey of the twenty-one minorities of Northern China. Northern China comprises the provinces or autonomous regions of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Anhui, and Jiangsu. The survey also takes into account small groups of minorities living in Southern China but whose majorities are resident in the North, such as Mongols, Manchus, and Hui. Conversely, Tibetans living in Qinghai, Gansu, and other parts of Northern China are not considered here because most Tibetans live in Tibet which, by our definition, is included in Southern China.https://cedar.wwu.edu/easpress/1007/thumbnail.jp

Humans and Their Environment: A Proposal for a New Perspective

The ultimate purpose of this essay is to persuade humans to adopt a new, more objective perspective of their relationship to their environment, including the universe, but the odds of approaching, let alone reaching, this goal during my life are close to zero. Therefore, I limit my goal by examining the perspective held by scientists in the field of astrophysics for two reasons: they spend most of their professional activities in astrophysics and they do that by employing the scientific method. The first part of this essay presents a brief description of the scientific method and its product, the current perspective, followed by the reasons why I believe the present perspective is faulty. The second part offers a step-by-step construction of a new perspective which will not only help astrophysicists in their work but might also, gradually and at least occasionally, help all humans see themselves and their environment in a more objective manner

    Mongolian Short Stories

Mongolian Short Stories, edited by Henry G. Schwarz: My students rightfully complain that they need an anthology of unabridged and representative samples of Mongolian literature. There is at present only one source for such materials, the magazine, Mongolia. Unfortunately, the magazine, like most other periodical publications of its kind, scatters its literary samples across scores of issues. Moreover, it is probably true that this useful magazine is still little known in the United States where I would guess fewer than ten university libraries have complete sets. To meet my students\u27 legitimate demands, I have selected some twenty-one short stories from the pages of this magazine, and have attempted to edit them into acceptable contemporary American English. I have endeavored as much as it is feasible to make the selection representative of different generations of writers and of different themes.https://cedar.wwu.edu/easpress/1010/thumbnail.jp
