    Effect of Poisson ratio on cellular structure formation

    Mechanically active cells in soft media act as force dipoles. The resulting elastic interactions are long-ranged and favor the formation of strings. We show analytically that due to screening, the effective interaction between strings decays exponentially, with a decay length determined only by geometry. Both for disordered and ordered arrangements of cells, we predict novel phase transitions from paraelastic to ferroelastic and anti-ferroelastic phases as a function of Poisson ratio.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures include

    Supersymmetry Constraints on Type IIB Supergravity

    Supersymmetry is used to derive conditions on higher derivative terms in the effective action of type IIB supergravity. Using these conditions, we are able to prove earlier conjectures that certain modular invariant interactions of order alpha' **3 relative to the Einstein-Hilbert term are proportional to eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the fundamental domain of SL(2,Z).     Radiative corrections to the pressure and the one-loop polarization tensor of massless modes in SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics

    We compute the one-loop polarization tensor Π\Pi for the on-shell, massless mode in a thermalized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory being in its deconfining phase. Postulating that SU(2)CMB=todayU(1)Y_{\tiny{CMB}}\stackrel{\tiny{today}}=U(1)_Y, we discuss Π\Pi's effect on the low-momentum part of the black-body spectrum at temperatures 2...4\sim 2... 4 TCMBT_{\tiny{CMB}} where TCMB2.73T_{\tiny{CMB}}\sim 2.73 K. A table-top experiment is proposed to test the above postulate. As an application, we point out a possible connection with the stability of dilute, cold, and old innergalactic atomic hydrogen clouds.     Type IIB instanton as a wave in twelve dimensions

    0-brane of type IIA string theory can be interpreted as a dimensional reduction of a gravitational wave in 11 dimensions. We observe that a similar interpretation applies also to the D-instanton background of type IIB theory: it can be viewed as a reduction (along one spatial and one time-like direction) of a wave in a 12-dimensional theory. The instanton charge is thus related to a linear momentum in 12 dimensions.     Fingering Instability of Dislocations and Related Defects

    We identify a fundamental morphological instability of mobile dislocations in crystals and related line defects. A positive gradient in the local driving force along the direction of defect motion destabilizes long-wavelength vibrational modes, producing a ``fingering'' pattern. The minimum unstable wavelength scales as the inverse square root of the force gradient. We demonstrate the instability's onset in simulations of a screw dislocation in Al (via molecular dynamics) and of a vortex in a 3-d XY ``rotator'' model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A Catalogue of Field Horizontal Branch Stars Aligned with High Velocity Clouds

    We present a catalogue of 430 Field Horizontal Branch (FHB) stars, selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES), which fortuitously align with high column density neutral hydrogen (HI) High-Velocity Cloud (HVC) gas. These stars are ideal candidates for absorption-line studies of HVCs, attempts at which have been made for almost 40 years with little success. A parent sample of 8321 HES FHB stars was used to extract HI spectra along each line-of-sight, using the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey. All lines-of-sight aligned with high velocity HI emission with peak brightness temperatures greater than 120mK were examined. The HI spectra of these 430 probes were visually screened and cross-referenced with several HVC catalogues. In a forthcoming paper, we report on the results of high-resolution spectroscopic observations of a sample of stars drawn from this catalogue.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. ApJS accepted.     Friction Laws for Elastic Nano-Scale Contacts

    The effect of surface curvature on the law relating frictional forces F with normal load L is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations as a function of surface symmetry, adhesion, and contamination. Curved, non-adhering, dry, commensurate surfaces show a linear dependency, F proportional to L, similar to dry flat commensurate or amorphous surfaces and macroscopic surfaces. In contrast, curved, non-adhering, dry, amorphous surfaces show F proportional to L^(2/3) similar to friction force microscopes. In our model, adhesive effects are most adequately described by the Hertz plus offset model, as the simulations are confined to small contact radii. Curved lubricated or contaminated surfaces show again different behavior; details depend on how much of the contaminant gets squeezed out of the contact. Also, it is seen that the friction force in the lubricated case is mainly due to atoms at the entrance of the tip.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Europhys. Let

    3-D Photoionization Structure and Distances of Planetary Nebulae II. Menzel 1

    We present the results of a spatio-kinematic study of the planetary nebula Menzel 1 using spectro-photometric mapping and a 3-D photoionization code. We create several 2-D emission line images from our long-slit spectra, and use these to derive the line fluxes for 15 lines, the Halpha/Hbeta extinction map, and the [SII] line ratio density map of the nebula. We use our photoionization code constrained by these data to derive the three-dimensional nebular structure and ionizing star parameters of Menzel 1 by simultaneously fitting the integrated line intensities, the density map, and the observed morphologies in several lines, as well as the velocity structure. Using theoretical evolutionary tracks of intermediate and low mass stars, we derive a mass for the central star of 0.63+-0.05 Msolar.     Depinning transition in type-II superconductors

    The surface impedance Z(f) of conventional isotropic materials has been carefully measured for frequencies f ranging from 1 kHz to 3 MHz, allowing a detailed investigation of the depinning transition. Our results exhibit the irrelevance of classical ideas to the dynamics of vortex pinning. We propose a new picture, where the linear ac response is entirely governed by disordered boundary conditions of a rough surface, whereas in the bulk vortices respond freely. The universal law for Z(f) thus predicted is in remarkable agreement with experiment, and tentatively applies to microwave data in YBaCuO films.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 14 reference
