    Embedding the Organizational Culture Profile into Schwartz’s Universal Value Theory using Multidimensional Scaling with Regional Restrictions

    Person-organization fit is often measured by the congruence of a person’s values and the values that he or she ascribes to the organization. A popular instrument used in this context is the Organizational Culture Profile (O’Reilly, Chatman, & Caldwell, 1991). The OCP scales its 54 items on eight factors, derived by exploratory factor analysis. We investigate the extent to which the OCP can be embedded into Schwartz’s Theory of Universals in Values (TUV) that is formulated in terms of a circumplex in MDS space. To address this question, we develop a non-standard MDS method that enforces a TUV-based axial regionality onto the solution space together with a permutation test that assesses the consistency of the side constraints with the MDS representation. We find that the OCP can indeed be largely embedded into the TUV. The practical implication is that P-O fit can at least be approximated by the congruence of the person’s and the organization’s positions on two value dimensions, risk vs. rules and results vs. relations

    Reframing the mammoth steppe: Insights from analysis of isotopic niches

    Woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), horse (Equus spp.) and bison (Bison spp.) coexisted with a variety of mammalian megafauna across the Pleistocene mammoth steppe – a megacontinental ecosystem that spanned northern Eurasia and northwestern North America. Previous research has suggested that highly conserved niches with minimal niche overlap allowed high levels of species diversity on the mammoth steppe. Here we evaluate previously published and some new collagen carbon and nitrogen isotope data (δ13C, δ15N) for mammoth steppe megaherbivores using Stable Isotope Bayesian Ellipses in R (SIBER) and linear regression models to determine isotopic niches for individual species during broad time intervals (pre-, during and post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)) at multiple geographic regions across the mammoth steppe. Individual species maintained relatively consistent isotopic niche positions at different geographic locations and during different times. Diet and habitat niches for any given species appear to have been similar across the mammoth steppe. Between some regions and times, however, species' isotopic niches changed, suggesting adaptation to local climatic conditions and/or changes in the nitrogen isotope patterns at the base of the food web. Isotopic niche overlap, including at the level of core niche overlap (>60% overlap), was observed in at least one time and region for most species. This overlap suggests high levels of functional redundancy in the ecosystem, whereby one species could fulfil another's ecological role in the latter's absence. Despite spatial and temporal environmental variation, species' adaptability and functional redundancy within the ecosystem would have made the mammoth steppe a highly resilient ecosystem

    Local and Global Casimir Energies: Divergences, Renormalization, and the Coupling to Gravity

    From the beginning of the subject, calculations of quantum vacuum energies or Casimir energies have been plagued with two types of divergences: The total energy, which may be thought of as some sort of regularization of the zero-point energy, 12ω\sum\frac12\hbar\omega, seems manifestly divergent. And local energy densities, obtained from the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, T00\langle T_{00}\rangle, typically diverge near boundaries. The energy of interaction between distinct rigid bodies of whatever type is finite, corresponding to observable forces and torques between the bodies, which can be unambiguously calculated. The self-energy of a body is less well-defined, and suffers divergences which may or may not be removable. Some examples where a unique total self-stress may be evaluated include the perfectly conducting spherical shell first considered by Boyer, a perfectly conducting cylindrical shell, and dilute dielectric balls and cylinders. In these cases the finite part is unique, yet there are divergent contributions which may be subsumed in some sort of renormalization of physical parameters. The divergences that occur in the local energy-momentum tensor near surfaces are distinct from the divergences in the total energy, which are often associated with energy located exactly on the surfaces. However, the local energy-momentum tensor couples to gravity, so what is the significance of infinite quantities here? For the classic situation of parallel plates there are indications that the divergences in the local energy density are consistent with divergences in Einstein's equations; correspondingly, it has been shown that divergences in the total Casimir energy serve to precisely renormalize the masses of the plates, in accordance with the equivalence principle.Comment: 53 pages, 1 figure, invited review paper to Lecture Notes in Physics volume in Casimir physics edited by Diego Dalvit, Peter Milonni, David Roberts, and Felipe da Ros

    Women, men and coronary heart disease: a review of the qualitative literature

    Aim. This paper presents a review of the qualitative literature which examines the experiences of patients with coronary heart disease. The paper also assesses whether the experiences of both female and male patients are reflected in the literature and summarizes key themes. Background. Understanding patients' experiences of their illness is important for coronary heart disease prevention and education. Qualitative methods are particularly suited to eliciting patients' detailed understandings and perceptions of illness. As much previous research has been 'gender neutral', this review pays particular attention to gender. Methods. Published papers from 60 qualitative studies were identified for the review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PREMEDLINE, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science using keywords related to coronary heart disease. Findings. Early qualitative studies of patients with coronary heart disease were conducted almost exclusively with men, and tended to generalize from 'male' experience to 'human' experience. By the late 1990s this pattern had changed, with the majority of studies including women and many being conducted with solely female samples. However, many studies that include both male and female coronary heart disease patients still do not have a specific gender focus. Key themes in the literature include interpreting symptoms and seeking help, belief about coronary 'candidates' and relationships with health professionals. The influence of social roles is important: many female patients have difficulties reconciling family responsibilities and medical advice, while male patients worry about being absent from work. Conclusions. There is a need for studies that compare the experiences of men and women. There is also an urgent need for work that takes masculinity and gender roles into account when exploring the experiences of men with coronary heart disease

    Health-related quality of life and its determinants during and after treatment for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia:a national, prospective, longitudinal study in the Netherlands

    OBJECTIVES: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is impaired in paediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Over the past decades, ALL treatment has successfully been adjusted to the risk of relapse, which is now reflected by the stratification of patients into three risk groups who receive treatment of differing intensities. This study is the first to evaluate the longitudinal course of HRQoL in light of these adjustments and identify determinants of HRQoL. DESIGN: Two prospective, national cohort studies (add-on studies within the two most recent treatment protocols for children with ALL (ALL-10 and ALL-11)). SETTING: Dutch paediatric oncology hospitals between October 2006 and October 2009 (ALL-10) and between August 2013 and July 2017 (ALL-11).PARTICIPANTS: Patients with ALL (2-18 years) are treated according to the ALL-10 or ALL-11 treatment protocol. Patients treated according to the ALL-10 protocol only completed a cancer-specific QoL measure and patients treated according to the ALL-11 protocol completed both a cancer-specific and generic QoL measure (see below). OUTCOME MEASURES: HRQoL, assessed with parent-proxy questionnaires (PedsQL Generic and Cancer module) within the first 5 months (T0), at 1 year (T1), 2 years (T2) and 3 years (T3) after diagnosis. The proportion of patients with clinically relevant generic HRQoL impairment was compared with healthy norm values. Multivariable mixed model analyses were used to evaluate the development of HRQoL over time and its medical and sociodemographic determinants (collected on enrolment). RESULTS: Of the ALL-10 cohort, 132 families participated and of the ALL-11 cohort, 136 families participated (268 total). Thus, cancer-specific HRQoL assessments were available for 268 patients (median age 5.3 years (IQR 6.15), 56.0% boys, 69.0% medium-risk ALL), and generic HRQoL assessments for 136 patients (median age 4.8 years (IQR 6.13), 60.3% boys, 75.0% medium-risk ALL). Generic HRQoL improved between timepoints T0 and T3 (total score B 16.1, 95% CI 12.2 to 20.1, p&lt;0.001), but did not restore to normal 1 year after the end of treatment: 28.0% of children remained impaired compared with 16% in the general population (p=0.003). Cancer-specific HRQoL generally improved from T0 to T2 (Pain B 11.3, 95% CI 7.1 to 15.5; Nausea B 11.7, 8.4 to 15.1; Procedural Anxiety B 19.1, 14.8 to 23.4; Treatment Anxiety B 12.8, 9.5 to 16.0; Worry B 3.5, 0.6 to 6.3; Communication B 8.5, 5.0 to 11.9; all p&lt;0.001 except for Worry (p=0.02)), while Physical Appearance and Cognitive Functioning remained stable. Higher treatment intensity and experiencing pain or simultaneous chronic illness were associated with lower HRQoL over time for multiple subscales. CONCLUSIONS: HRQoL impairment is prevalent during and after ALL treatment. Patients with standard-risk ALL and reduced treatment intensity have better HRQoL than patients in higher risk groups. Systematic monitoring of HRQoL is of utmost importance in order to provide timely psychosocial interventions and supportive care.</p

    Biomarkers and longitudinal changes in lumbar spine degeneration and low back pain: the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project

    Objective: To determine if baseline biomarkers are associated with longitudinal changes in the worsening of disc space narrowing (DSN), vertebral osteophytes (OST), and low back pain (LBP). Design: Paired baseline (2003–2004) and follow-up (2006–2010) lumbar spine radiographs from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project were graded for severity of DSN and OST. LBP severity was self-reported. Concentrations of analytes (cytokines, proteoglycans, and neuropeptides) were quantified by immunoassay. Pressure-pain threshold (PPT), a marker of sensitivity to pressure pain, was measured with a standard dolorimeter. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate odd ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of biomarker levels with DSN, OST, or LBP. Interactions were tested between biomarker levels and the number of affected lumbar spine levels or LBP. Results: We included participants (n = 723) with biospecimens, PPT, and paired lumbar spine radiographic data. Baseline Lumican, a proteoglycan reflective of extracellular matrix changes, was associated with longitudinal changes in DSN worsening (OR = 3.19 [95% CI 1.22, 8.01]). Baseline brain-derived neuropathic factor, a neuropeptide, (OR = 1.80 [95% CI 1.03, 3.16]) was associated with longitudinal changes in OST worsening, which may reflect osteoclast genesis. Baseline hyaluronic acid (OR = 1.31 [95% CI 1.01, 1.71]), indicative of systemic inflammation, and PPT (OR = 1.56 [95% CI 1.02, 2.31]) were associated with longitudinal increases in LBP severity. Conclusion: These findings suggest that baseline biomarkers are associated with longitudinal changes occurring in structures of the lumbar spine (DSN vs OST). Markers of inflammation and perceived pressure pain sensitivity were associated with longitudinal worsening of LBP

    Modified granular impact force laws for the OSIRIS-REx touchdown on the surface of asteroid (101955) Bennu

    The OSIRIS-REx mission collected a sample from the surface of the asteroid (101955) Bennu in October 2020. Here we study the impact of the OSIRIS-REx Touch-and-Go Sampling Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) interacting with the surface of an asteroid in the framework of granular physics. Traditional approaches to estimating the penetration depth of a projectile into a granular medium include force laws and scaling relationships formulated from laboratory experiments in terrestrial-gravity conditions. However, it is unclear that these formulations extend to the OSIRIS-REx scenario of a 1300-kg spacecraft interacting with regolith in a microgravity environment. We studied the TAGSAM interaction with Bennu through numerical simulations using two collisional codes, pkdgrav and GDC-i. We validated their accuracy by reproducing the results of laboratory impact experiments in terrestrial gravity. We then performed TAGSAM penetration simulations varying the following geotechnical properties of the regolith: packing fraction (P), bulk density, inter-particle cohesion (σc), and angle of friction (ϕ). We find that the outcome of a spacecraft-regolith impact has a non-linear dependence on packing fraction. Closely packed regolith (P≳0.6) can effectively resist the penetration of TAGSAM if ϕ≳28° and/or σc≳50 Pa. For loosely packed regolith (P≲0.5), the penetration depth is governed by a drag force that scales with impact velocity to the 4/3 power, consistent with energy conservation. We discuss the importance of low-speed impact studies for predicting and interpreting spacecraft-surface interactions. We show that these low-energy events also provide a framework for interpreting the burial depths of large boulders in asteroidal regolith
