Thermal-Expansion and Fracture Toughness Properties ofParts made from Liquid Crystal Stereolithography Resins
Liquid crystal (LC) resins are a new kind ofstereolithography material that can produce
parts with structured or ordered morphologies instead ofthe amorphous morphologies that result
from standard resins. The LC molecules can be aligned before cure resulting in an anisotropic
crosslinked network when the laser induced polymerization "locks-in" the alignment. Previous
papers have explored liquid crystal orientation dynamics [1], the effects of orientation on viscoelastic and mechanical properties [2,3], and the processing ofLC resins by stereolithography [4].
This paper considers the effects ofmorphology on fracture toughness and thermal-expansion
properties. Both toughness and thermal-stability continue to be important issues for
stereolithography parts. The use ofLC resins may provide a way to significantly improve
performance in both ofthese areas, and in addition result in parts with high upper use .

State education as high-yield investment: human capital theory in European policy discourse
Human Capital Theory has been an increasingly important phenomenon in economic thought over the last 50 years. The central role it affords to education has become even more marked in recent years as the concept of the ‘knowledge economy’ has become a global concern. In this paper, the prevalence of Human Capital Theory within European educational policy discourse is explored. The paper examines a selection of policy documents from a number of disparate European national contexts and considers the extent to which the ideas of Human Capital Theory can be seen to be influential. In the second part of the paper, the implications of Human Capital Theory for education are considered, with a particular focus on the possible ramifications at a time of economic austerity. The paper argues that Human Capital Theory risks offering a diminished view of the person, a diminished view of education, but that with its sole focus on economic goals leaves room for educationists and others to argue for the educational, social, and moral values it ignores, and for the conception of the good life and good society it fails to mention
Instability due to long range Coulomb interaction in a liquid of polarizable particles (polarons, etc.)
The interaction Hamiltonian for a system of polarons a la Feynman in the
presence of long range Coulomb interaction is derived and the dielectric
function is computed in mean field. For large enough concentration a liquid of
such particles becomes unstable. The onset of the instability is signaled by
the softening of a collective optical mode in which all electrons oscillate in
phase in their respective self-trapping potential. We associate the instability
with a metallization of the system. Optical experiments in slightly doped
cuprates and doped nickelates are analyzed within this theory.
We discuss why doped cuprates matallize whereas nickelates do not.Comment: 5 pages,1 figur
The uses and functions of ageing celebrity war reporters
This article starts from the premise that recognition of professional authority and celebrity status depends on the embodiment and performance of field-specific dispositional practices: there’s no such thing as a natural, though we often talk about journalistic instinct as something someone simply has or doesn’t have. Next, we have little control over how we are perceived by peers and publics, and what we think are active positioning or subjectifying practices are in fact, after Bourdieu, revelations of already-determined delegation. The upshot is that two journalists can arrive at diametrically opposed judgements on the basis of observation of the same actions of a colleague, and as individuals we are blithely hypocritical in forming (or reciting) evaluations of the professional identity of celebrities. Nowhere is this starker than in the discourse of age-appropriate behaviour, which this paper addresses using the examples of ‘star’ war reporters John Simpson, Kate Adie and Martin Bell. A certain rough-around-the-edges irreverence is central to dispositional authenticity amongst war correspondents, and for ageing hacks this incorporates gendered attitudes to sex and alcohol as well as indifference to protocol. And yet perceived age-inappropriate sexual behaviour is also used to undermine professional integrity, and the paper ends by outlining the phenomenological context that makes possible this effortless switching between amoral and moralising recognition by peers and audiences alike
Density matrix reconstruction from displaced photon number distributions
We consider state reconstruction from the measurement statistics of phase
space observables generated by photon number states. The results are obtained
by inverting certain infinite matrices. In particular, we obtain reconstruction
formulas, each of which involves only a single phase space observable.Comment: 19 page
Barro's fertility equations: the robustness of the role of female education and income
Barro and Lee (1994) and Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1995) find that real per-capita GDP and both male and female education have important effects on fertility in their cross-country empirical studies. In order to assess the robustness of their results, their estimated models are subjected to specification and diagnostic testing, the effects on the model of using the improved Barro and Lee (1996) cross-country data on educational attainment of the population aged 15 and over are examined, and the different specifications used by Barro and Lee and by Barro and Sala-i-Martin compared. The results obtained suggest that their fertility equations do not perform well in terms of diagnostic testing, and are very sensitive to the use of different vintages of the educational attainment proxies and of the Summers-Heston cross-country income data. A robust explanation of fertility, to link with empirical growth equations, has, therefore, not yet been found; further work is required in this area
