Stochastic Transition Model for Discrete Agent Movements
We propose a calibrated two-dimensional cellular automaton model to simulate
pedestrian motion behavior. It is a v=4 (3) model with exclusion statistics and
random shuffled dynamics. The underlying regular grid structure results in a
direction-dependent behavior, which has in particular not been considered
within previous approaches. We efficiently compensate these grid-caused

Earnings and the Elusive Dividends of Health
This paper looks at the relationship between health and income. After discussing the general context of health improvements in Latin America during the last few decades, the study elaborates on the interrelationships between the physical and social determinants of health, the complexities that arise in attributing earnings differentials to variations in health status, and the difficulties of accurately measuring health status. The paper presents a methodology for estimating the impact of health on earnings that addresses problems of measurement error and endogeneity, then summarizes the main findings of related studies undertaken as part of a larger project. These studies show that health status does have a significant, although modest, impact on earnings in four Latin American countries. Furthermore, environmental conditions (such as housing and sanitation) appear to have significant impacts on health status, compared to health services and public health facilities, which show little influence. The universally strong relationship between education and earnings is only modestly reduced by the inclusion of health status despite a general expectation that estimated returns to education were, in part, capturing the frequently unmeasured effects of health. By analyzing these relationships together-health determinants and the impact of health on earnings-we can assess the magnitude and importance of the `human capital`component of health status, validate and compare a range of health indicators, and identify promising areas for public policy to invest in health improvements.
LANDSAT inventory of surface-mined areas using extendible digital techniques
Multispectral analysis of LANDSAT imagery provides a rapid and accurate means of identification, classification, and measurement of strip-mined surfaces in Western Maryland. Four band analysis allows distinction of a variety of strip-mine associated classes, but has limited extendibility. A method for surface area measurement of strip mines, which is both geographically and temporally extendible, was developed using band-ratioed LANDSAT reflectance data. The accuracy of area measurement by this method, averaged over three LANDSAT scenes taken between September 1972 and July 1974, is greater than 93%. Total affected acreage of large (50 hectare/120 acre) mines can be measured to within 1.0%
The Chirality operators for Heisenberg Spin Systems
The ground state of closed Heisenberg spin chains with an odd number of sites
has a chiral degeneracy, in addition to a two-fold Kramers degeneracy. A
non-zero chirality implies that the spins are not coplanar, and is a measure of
handedness. The chirality operator, which can be treated as a spin-1/2
operator, is explicitly constructed in terms of the spin operators, and is

Properties of optically selected BL Lac candidates from the SDSS
\textbf{Context.} Deep optical surveys open the avenue for find large numbers
of BL Lac objects that are hard to identify because they lack the unique
properties classifying them as such. While radio or X-ray surveys typically
reveal dozens of sources, recent compilations based on optical criteria alone
have increased the number of BL Lac candidates considerably. However, these
compilations are subject to biases and may contain a substantial number of
contaminating sources. \textbf{Aims.} In this paper we extend our analysis of
182 optically selected BL Lac object candidates from the SDSS with respect to
an earlier study. The main goal is to determine the number of bona fide BL Lac
objects in this sample. \textbf{Methods.} We examine their variability
characteristics, determine their broad-band radio-UV SEDs, and search for the
presence of a host galaxy. In addition we present new optical spectra for 27
targets with improved S/N with respect to the SDSS spectra. \textbf{Results.}
At least 59% of our targets have shown variability between SDSS DR2 and our
observations by more than 0.1-0.27 mag de- pending on the telescope used. A
host galaxy was detected in 36% of our targets. The host galaxy type and
luminosities are consistent with earlier studies of BL Lac host galaxies.
Simple fits to broad-band SEDS for 104 targets of our sample derived
synchrotron peak frequencies between with a peak at
. Our new optical spectra do not reveal any new
redshift for any of our objects. Thus the sample contains a large number of
bona fide BL Lac objects and seems to contain a substantial fraction of

Satellite data for surface-mine inventory
To determine the feasibility of satellite data for surface-mine inventory, particularly as it applies to coal, a case study was conducted in Maryland. A band-ratio method was developed to measure disturbed surface areas, and it proved to be extendible both temporally and geographically. This method was used to measure area changes in the region over three time periods from September 1972 through July 1974 and to map the entire two-county area for 1973. For mines ranging between 31 and 244 acres (12 to 98 hectares) the measurement accuracy of total affected acreage was determined to be 92%. Mines of 120 acres (50 hectares) and larger were measured with greater accuracy, some within one percent of the actual area. The ability to identify, classify, and measure strip-mine surfaces in a two-county area (1,541 square kilometers - 595 square miles) of western Maryland was demonstrated through the use of computer processing. On the basis of these results the use of LANDSAT satellite data and multilevel sampling of aircraft and field verification inspections, multispectral analysis of digital data is shown to be an effective, rapid, and accurate means of monitoring the surface mining cycle
Combustion of coal gas fuels in a staged combustor
Gaseous fuels produced from coal resources generally have heating values much lower than natural gas; the low heating value could result in unstable or inefficient combustion. Coal gas fuels may contain ammonia which if oxidized in an uncontrolled manner could result in unacceptable nitrogen oxide exhaust emission levels. Previous investigations indicate that staged, rich-lean combustion represents a desirable approach to achieve stable, efficient, low nitrogen oxide emission operation for coal-derived liquid fuels contaning up to 0.8-wt pct nitrogen. An experimental program was conducted to determine whether this fuel tolerance can be extended to include coal-derived gaseous fuels. The results of tests with three nitrogen-free fuels having heating values of 100, 250, and 350 Btu/scf and a 250 Btu/scf heating value doped to contain 0.7 pct ammonia are presented

Journal ArticleWe show that in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems with weak magnetostrictive coupling the coefficient of thermal expansion gives a useful measure of the magnetic specific heat. We also analyze the strong coupling situation by means of our simplified, but soluble model, and find it possible to introduce an effective temperature T* and an effective magnetic susceptibility. The exact pressure dependence of the thermodynamic functions can be found, and the pressure dependence of the Curie temperature is given explicitly.
