Nonhypnotic low-dose etomidate for rapid correction of hypercortisolaemia in cushing's syndrome
We determined the adrenostatic potential of low-dose nonhypnotic etomidate in six patients with Cushing's syndrome (ectopic Cushing's syndrome,n=2; Cushing's disease,n=3; bilateral adrenal adenoma,n=1). Etomidate was given as a continuous infusion for 32 h in a dose of 2.5 mg/h (n=5) or 0.3 mg/kg/h (n=3), respectively. Saline was given during a control period. The responsiveness to exogenous ACTH was studied during placebo and 7 and 31 h after commencing etomidate by administration of 250 µg 1–24 ACTH i.v. Etomidate (2.5 mg/h) led to a consistent decrease in serum cortisol in all patients from a mean of 39.4±13.3 to 21.1±5.7 µg/dl after 7 h (P<0.05 compared with placebo). After 24 h cortisol was reduced further to a mean steady state concentration of 12.3±5.7 µg/dl (P<0.05). At the end of the infusion period the cortisol increase in response to ACTH was reduced but not abolished. In contrast, a dose of 0.3 mg/kg/h etomidate induced unresponsiveness of serum cortisol to exogenous ACTH within 7 h. However, sedation was observed in two out of three patients at this dose, while during etomidate in a dose of 2.5 mg/h no side effects were seen. We conclude that low-dose non-hypnotic etomidate reduces serum cortisol to within the normal range in patients with Cushing's syndrome. The possibility to dissociate the adrenostatic effect of etomidate from its hypnotic action, the absence of side effects, and the i.v. route suggest that etomidate in a dose of 0.04–0.05 mg/kg/h may become the drug of choice for rapid initial control of hypercortisolism
Optimum Frequency and Gradient for the CLIC main linac accelerating structure
Recently the CLIC study has changed the operating frequency and accelerating gradient of the main linac from 30 GHz and 150 MV/m to 12 GHz and 100 MV/m, respectively. This major change of parameters has been driven by the results from a novel main linac optimization procedure. The procedure allows the simultaneous optimization of operating frequency, accelerating gradient, and many other parameters of CLIC main linac. It takes into account both beam dynamics (BD) and high power RF constraints. BD constraints are related to ermittance growth due to short- and long-range transverse wakefields. RF constraints are related to RF breakdown and pulsed surface heating of the accelerating structure. The optimization figure of merit includes the power efficiency, measured as a ratio of luminosity to the input power, as well as a quantity proportional to total cost
We describe the synthesis, characterisation and surface-modification of magnetic narroparticles and a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgel, followed by the assembly and characterisation of magnetic nanoparticles on the microgel. To facilitate this deposition, the surface of the microgel is first modified via the layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolytes. One advantage of this concept is that it allows an independent optimization and fine tuning of the magnetic and thermoresponsive properties of individual components (nanoparticles and microgels) before assembling them so that the hybrid core-shell structure retains all the individual properties. The,decisive parameter when exploiting the thermoresponsive and magnetic properties in such hybrid core-shell structures is the amount of heat transfer from the magnetic core onto the thermosensitive (loaded) microgel (for the subsequent heat-triggered release of drugs). Inductive heat study reveals that the heat generated by the magnetic narroparticles is sufficient to cause the collapse of the microgel above its volume phase transition temperature. Successful confinement of positively and negatively charged magnetic nanoparticles between polyelectrolyte layers is achieved using the layer-by-layer deposition onto the microgel. Dynamic light scattering measurements show (i) the presence of each layer successfully deposited, (ii) the preservation of thermoresponsivity in the coated microgel, and (iii) that the magnetic nanoparticles do not get detached during the phase transition of the microgel. Electrophoresis measurements confirm charge reversal at every stage of layering of polycations, polyanions and magnetic nanoparticles. This unique combination of thermoresponsivity and magnetism opens up novel perspectives towards remotely controlled drug carriers. (c) 200
Second Order Correlation Function of a Phase Fluctuating Bose-Einstein Condensate
The coherence properties of phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates are
studied both theoretically and experimentally. We derive a general expression
for the N-particle correlation function of a condensed Bose gas in a highly
elongated trapping potential. The second order correlation function is analyzed
in detail and an interferometric method to directly measure it is discussed and
experimentally implemented. Using a Bragg diffraction interferometer, we
measure intensity correlations in the interference pattern generated by two
spatially displaced copies of a parent condensate. Our experiment demonstrates
how to characterize the second order correlation function of a highly elongated
condensate and to measure its phase coherence length.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy of strongly correlated systems in infinite dimensions
We study the electron-energy loss spectra of strongly correlated electronic
systems doped away from half-filling using dynamical mean-field theory
(). The formalism can be used to study the loss spectra in the
optical () limit, where it is simply related to the optical
response, and hence can be computed in an approximation-free way in .
We apply the general formalism to the one-band Hubbard model off , with
inclusion of site-diagonal randomness to simulate effects of doping. The
interplay between the coherence induced plasmon feature and the
incoherence-induced high energy continuum is explained in terms of the
evolution in the local spectral density upon hole doping. Inclusion of static
disorder is shown to result in qualitative changes in the low-energy features,
in particular, to the overdamping of the plasmon feature, resulting in a
completely incoherent response. The calculated EELS lineshapes are compared to
experimentally observed EELS spectra for the normal state of the high-
materials near optimal doping and good qualitative agreement is found.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to J. Phys. - Cond. Mat
Characterization and control of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates
Quasi one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in elongated traps
exhibit significant phase fluctuations even at very low temperatures. We
present recent experimental results on the dynamic transformation of phase
fluctuations into density modulations during time-of-flight and show the
excellent quantitative agreement with the theoretical prediction. In addition
we confirm that under our experimental conditions, in the magnetic trap density
modulations are strongly suppressed even when the phase fluctuates. The paper
also discusses our theoretical results on control of the condensate phase by
employing a time-dependent perturbation. Our results set important limitations
on future applications of BEC in precision atom interferometry and atom optics,
but at the same time suggest pathways to overcome these limitations.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Baade's red sheet resolved into stars with HST in the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy VII Zw 403
HST WFPC2 observations of the nearby Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy VII~Zw~403 (=
UGC 6456) resolve single stars down to M-2.5, deep enough to
identify red giants. This population has a more uniform spatial distribution
than the young main-sequence stars and supergiants, forming the structure known
as "Baade's red sheet". We conclude that VII~Zw~403 is not a primeval galaxy.Comment: submitted to: ApJ Letter
