FURY: Fuzzy unification and resolution based on edit distance
We present a theoretically founded framework for fuzzy
unification and resolution based on edit distance over trees.
Our framework extends classical unification and resolution
conservatively. We prove important properties of the framework
and develop the FURY system, which implements the
framework efficiently using dynamic programming. We
evaluate the framework and system on a large problem in
the bioinformatics domain, that of detecting typographical
errors in an enzyme name databas
The dynamic analysis of submerged structures
Methods are described by which the dynamic interaction of structures with surrounding fluids can be computed by using finite element techniques. In all cases, the fluid is assumed to behave as an acoustic medium and is initially stationary. Such problems are solved either by explicitly modeling the fluid (using pressure or displacement as the basic fluid unknown) or by using decoupling approximations which take account of the fluid effects without actually modeling the fluid
Polysemy in Advertising
The article reviews the conceptual foundations of advertising polysemy – the occurrence of different interpretations for the same advertising message. We discuss how disciplines as diverse as psychology, semiotics and literary theory have dealt with the issue of polysemy, and provide translations and integration among these multiple perspectives. From such review we draw recurrent themes to foster future research in the area and to show how seemingly opposed methodological and theoretical perspectives complement and extend each other. Implications for advertising research and practice are discussed.Advertising;Polysemy;Semiotics
Energies of Quantum QED Flux Tubes
In this talk I present recent studies on vacuum polarization energies and
energy densities induced by QED flux tubes. I focus on comparing three and four
dimensional scenarios and the discussion of various approximation schemes in
view of the exact treatment.Comment: 9 pages latex, Talk presented at the QFEXT 05 workshop in Barcelona,

Limit cycles of a perceptron
An artificial neural network can be used to generate a series of numbers. A
boolean perceptron generates bit sequences with a periodic structure. The
corresponding spectrum of cycle lengths is investigated analytically and
numerically; it has similarities with properties of rational numbers.Comment: LaTeX and 4 postscript pages of figure
Experimental studies of Strong Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in gauge boson scattering and three gauge boson production
If no light Higgs boson exist, the interaction among the gauge bosons becomes
strong at high energies (~1TeV). The effects of strong electroweak symmetry
breaking (SEWSB) could manifest themselves as anomalous couplings before they
give rise to new physical states, thus measurement of all couplings and their
possible deviation from Standard Model (SM) values could give valuable
information for understanding the true nature of symmetry breaking sector. Here
we present a detailed study of the measurement of quartic gauge couplings in
weak boson scattering processes and a possibility for same measurement in
triple weak boson production. Expected limits on the parameters alpha_4
alpha_5,alpha_6, alpha_7 and alpha_10 in electroweak chiral Lagrangian are
given.Comment: talk presented at LCWS05, Stanford, USA, March 200
Partially Unbiased Entangled Bases
In this contribution we group the operator basis for d^2 dimensional Hilbert
space in a way that enables us to relate bases of entangled states with single
particle mutually unbiased state bases (MUB), each in dimensionality d. We
utilize these sets of operators to show that an arbitrary density matrix for
this d^2 dimensional Hilbert space system is analyzed by via d^2+d+1
measurements, d^2-d of which involve those entangled states that we associate
with MUB of the d-dimensional single particle constituents. The number
lies in the middle of the number of measurements needed for bipartite
state reconstruction with two-particle MUB (d^2+1) and those needed by
single-particle MUB [(d^2+1)^2].Comment: 5 page
