Space laser components reliability

Space environment presents unique challenges for operation of optics and optical coatings as part of laser systems. Besides testing components and sub-systems on the component qualification level, the extended testing of complete laser systems like flight modules under acceptance level conditions is an effective way to determine the reliability and long term stability, mitigating the mission risk. Hence, optics as part of high power space laser systems have to be extensively tested in view of an upcoming mission. The goal is to identify and mitigate production flaws, and to optimize the laser environment, such that a safe operational margin can be maintained over the expected lifetime in orbit

Konfliktpartnerschaft - still alive: veränderter Konfliktmodus in der verarbeitenden Industrie

Die deutschen industriellen Beziehungen haben sich in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten strukturell in drei Welten der Arbeitsbeziehungen segmentiert. Zugleich hat sich der Konfliktmodus in der ersten Welt, die durch die exportorientierte Industrie geprägt ist, stark modifiziert: Durch komplexe Systeme der feinjustierten Interessenverarbeitung ist der öffentlich wahrnehmbare Großkonflikt die Ausnahme geworden, dezentrale Konflikte sind dagegen der Regelfall. Mit Bezug auf das von Müller-Jentsch pointierte Konzept der Konfliktpartnerschaft wird die These vertreten, dass auch mit diesem veränderten Konfliktmodus weiterhin von einer Konfliktpartnerschaft, die ein spezifischer Modus der Sozialpartnerschaft ist, in der exportorientierten Industrie gesprochen werden könne.Over the last three decades, the German industrial relations have segmented into three worlds of labour relations. At the same time the conflict mode in the first world, which is dominated by the export-oriented industry, has changed. Due to the complex system of adjusted knowledge processing, big, publicly observable conflicts are rather the exception whereas decentralised conflict solutions are the rule. According to Mueller-Jentsch’s concept of conflict partnership it is argued here that despite the changed environment and conflict modes, the term conflict partnership is still an appropriate mode in the export-oriented economy

Industrielle Beziehungen in Ostdeutschland: zwischen Eigensinn und Paternalismus

"Neben der Europäisierung der Politik und der Globalisierung der Ökonomie ist die Wiedervereinigung eine weitere große Herausforderung für das deutsche Modell industrieller Beziehungen. Anhand der Folie des 'Modell Deutschland-Ansatzes' wird geprüft, wie sich die Ausdehnung der Tarifautonomie auf die fünf neuen Länder bei den Gewerkschaften, Arbeitgeberverbänden und in der Tarifpolitik auswirkt (1990-2000). Untersucht wird dies am Beispiel der Metall- und Elektroindustrie, dem größten und einflussreichsten industriellen Sektor der Bundesrepublik. Zentrale These: Ostdeutschland ist trotz vieler Abweichungen, die vor allem mit der klein- und mittelständischen Industriestruktur zusammenhängen, kein Laboratorium, in dem ein neues Muster industrieller Beziehungen entsteht, das den historisch gewachsenen Pfad des westdeutschen Modells verlässt. Zukünftig wird es jedoch mehr regionale Abweichungen und Differenzen zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie geben, ohne dass die Einbindung in einen gemeinsamen institutionellen Kontext aufgegeben wird." (Autorenreferat)"Beside 'Europeanisation' of politics and globalisation of the economy, reunification of Germany is another challenge for the German model of industrial relations. Using the German model approach, this paper investigates the impact and consequences of territorial extension of free collective bargaining to the five new Länder on the policies of trade unions and employers' associations (1990-2000). Analyses focus on the metal and electric industries, the largest and most influential industrial sector in German economy. The main thesis pursued is that East Germany is not a laboratory producing new patterns of labour relations which will pass by the traditional German model. This is true despite the many differences between East and West which result from the differences in industrial structure (more small and medium-sized enterprises). Quite certain, these regional differences and deviations between 'centre' and 'periphery' will increase. They will not, however, challenge the embededdness of labour relations in East and West in a common institutional context." (author's abstract
