    Relativistic coupled-cluster single-double calculations of positron-atom bound states

    Relativistic coupled-cluster single-double approximation is used to calculate positron-atom bound states. The method is tested on closed-shell atoms such as Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, and Hg where a number of accurate calculations is available. It is then used to calculate positron binding energies for a range of open-shell transition metal atoms from Sc to Cu, from Y to Pd, and from Lu to Pt. These systems possess Feshbach resonances, which can be used to search for positron-atom binding experimentally through resonant annihilation or scattering.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Nonlinear optical properties of a channel waveguide produced with crosslinkable ferroelectric liquid crystals

    A binary mixture of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) was used for the design of a channel waveguide. The FLCs possess two important functionalities: a chromophore with a high hyperpolarizability ÎČ\beta and photoreactive groups. The smectic liquid crystal is aligned in layers parallel to the glass plates in a sandwich geometry. This alignment offers several advantages, such as that moderate electric fields are sufficient to achieve a high degree of polar order. The arrangement was then permanently fixed by photopolymerization which yielded a polar network possessing a high thermal and mechanical stability which did not show any sign of degradation within the monitored period of several months. The linear and nonlinear optical properties have been measured and all four independent components of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor dˉ\bar d have been determined. The off-resonant dd-coefficients are remarkably high and comparable to those of the best known inorganic materials. The alignment led to an inherent channel waveguide for p-polarized light without additional preparation steps. The photopolymerization did not induce scattering sites in the waveguide and the normalized losses were less than 2 dB/cm.     Effect of psychiatry liaison with general practitioners on depression severity in recently hospitalised cardiac patients: a randomised controlled trial

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Objective: To evaluate the effect on depressive symptoms in cardiac patients of patient-specific advice to general practitioners regarding management of comorbid depression. Design and setting: A randomised controlled trial in four general hospitals in Adelaide, South Australia. Participants: Patients (n = 669) admitted to cardiology units for a range of cardiovascular conditions who were screened and assessed as being depressed according to the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Intervention: Inpatient psychiatric review, followed by telephone case conferencing between specialist hospital staff and GPs to provide patient-specific information about the patient’s depression and its management, educational material, and ongoing clinical support. Main outcome measures: Level of depression severity at 12 months posthospitalisation. Results: On the basis of intention to treat, intervention patients had lower rates of moderate to severe depression (CES-D ≄ 27) after 12 months (25% v 35%, relative risk, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.54–0.96, number needed to treat for benefit, 11). The intervention was most effective in preventing progression from mild depression to moderate to severe depression. The multidisciplinary telephone case conferencing was difficult to implement and, in a post hoc analysis, brief phone advice from a psychiatrist was found to be effective. Objective: This post hoc analysis of the IDACC trial examines the effectiveness and practicality of different forms of communication between hospital psychiatric services and general practitioners. Methods: We randomised 669 cardiac inpatients with depressive symptoms, identified with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), to an intervention or usual care control group. Individual depression scores and depression management guidelines were sent to GPs of all intervention patients. Where possible, psychiatric advice was provided to the GP either by multidisciplinary enhanced primary care case conference or one-to-one telephone advice. Results: Multidisciplinary case conferences were implemented for only 24% of intervention patients. General practitioners received individual telephone advice in 40% of cases, and 36% received written information only. The psychiatrist telephone advice resulted in a significant reduction in the proportion of patients with moderate to severe depression 12 months after cardiac hospitalisation (19% vs. 35%).     Coherence properties and quantum state transportation in an optical conveyor belt

    We have prepared and detected quantum coherences with long dephasing times at the level of single trapped cesium atoms. Controlled transport by an "optical conveyor belt" over macroscopic distances preserves the atomic coherence with slight reduction of coherence time. The limiting dephasing effects are experimentally identified and are of technical rather than fundamental nature. We present an analytical model of the reversible and irreversible dephasing mechanisms. Coherent quantum bit operations along with quantum state transport open the route towards a "quantum shift register" of individual neutral atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A gauge invariant quantization in a closed integral form is developed over a linear phase space endowed with an inhomogeneous Faraday electromagnetic tensor. An analog of the Groenewold product formula (corresponding to Weyl ordering) is obtained via a membrane magnetic area, and extended to the product of N symbols. The problem of ordering in quantization is related to different configurations of membranes: a choice of configuration determines a phase factor that fixes the ordering and controls a symplectic groupoid structure on the secondary phase space. A gauge invariant solution of the quantum evolution problem for a charged particle in an electromagnetic field is represented in an exact continual form and in the semiclassical approximation via the area of dynamical membranes.Comment: 39 pages, 17 figure

    Positronic lithium, an electronically stable Li-e+^+ ground state

    Calculations of the positron-Li system were performed using the Stochastic Variational Method and yielded a minimum energy of -7.53208 Hartree for the L=0 ground state. Unlike previous calculations of this system, the system was found to be stable against dissociation into the Ps + Li+^+ channel with a binding energy of 0.00217 Hartree and is therefore electronically stable. This is the first instance of a rigorous calculation predicting that it is possible to combine a positron with a neutral atom and form an electronically stable bound state.Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables.     A quantum group version of quantum gauge theories in two dimensions

    For the special case of the quantum group SLq(2,C) (q=expâĄÏ€i/r, r≄3)SL_q (2,{\bf C})\ (q= \exp \pi i/r,\ r\ge 3) we present an alternative approach to quantum gauge theories in two dimensions. We exhibit the similarities to Witten's combinatorial approach which is based on ideas of Migdal. The main ingredient is the Turaev-Viro combinatorial construction of topological invariants of closed, compact 3-manifolds and its extension to arbitrary compact 3-manifolds as given by the authors in collaboration with W.
