The Josephson critical current in a long mesoscopic S-N-S junction
We carry out an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the Josephson
effect in S-N-S junctions made of a diffusive normal metal (N) embedded between
two superconducting electrodes (S). Our experiments are performed on Nb-Cu-Nb
junctions with highly-transparent interfaces. We give the predictions of the
quasiclassical theory in various regimes on a precise and quantitative level.
We describe the crossover between the short and the long junction regimes and
provide the temperature dependence of the critical current using dimensionless
units and where
is the Thouless energy. Experimental and theoretical results are in excellent
quantitative agreement.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, slighly modified version, publishe
Fluxes, Gaugings and Gaugino Condensates
Based on the correspondence between the N = 1 superstring compactifications
with fluxes and the N = 4 gauged supergravities, we study effective N = 1
four-dimensional supergravity potentials arising from fluxes and gaugino
condensates in the framework of orbifold limits of (generalized) Calabi-Yau
compactifications. We give examples in heterotic and type II orientifolds in
which combined fluxes and condensates lead to vacua with small supersymmetry
breaking scale. We clarify the respective roles of fluxes and condensates in
supersymmetry breaking, and analyze the scaling properties of the gravitino
mass.Comment: 17 pages, C
Optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy of the growth of silver nanoparticles
Results obtained from the optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL)
spectroscopy experiments have shown the formation of excitons in the
silver-exchanged glass samples. These findings are reported here for the first
time. Further, we investigate the dramatic changes in the photoemission
properties of the silver-exchanged glass samples as a function of postannealing
temperature. Observed changes are thought to be due to the structural
rearrangements of silver and oxygen bonding during the heat treatments of the
glass matrix. In fact, photoelectron spectroscopy does reveal these chemical
transformations of silver-exchanged soda glass samples caused by the thermal
effects of annealing in a high vacuum atmosphere. An important correlation
between temperature-induced changes of the PL intensity and thermal growth of
the silver nanoparticles has been established in this Letter through precise
spectroscopic studies.Comment: 15 pages,4 figures,PDF fil
Fracton pairing mechanism for "strange" superconductors: Self-assembling organic polymers and copper-oxide compounds
Self-assembling organic polymers and copper-oxide compounds are two classes
of "strange" superconductors, whose challenging behavior does not comply with
the traditional picture of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS)
superconductivity in regular crystals. In this paper, we propose a theoretical
model that accounts for the strange superconducting properties of either class
of the materials. These properties are considered as interconnected
manifestations of the same phenomenon: We argue that superconductivity occurs
in the both cases because the charge carriers (i.e., electrons or holes)
exchange {\it fracton excitations}, quantum oscillations of fractal lattices
that mimic the complex microscopic organization of the strange superconductors.
For the copper oxides, the superconducting transition temperature as
predicted by the fracton mechanism is of the order of K. We suggest
that the marginal ingredient of the high-temperature superconducting phase is
provided by fracton coupled holes that condensate in the conducting
copper-oxygen planes owing to the intrinsic field-effect-transistor
configuration of the cuprate compounds. For the gate-induced superconducting
phase in the electron-doped polymers, we simultaneously find a rather modest
transition temperature of K owing to the limitations imposed by
the electron tunneling processes on a fractal geometry. We speculate that
hole-type superconductivity observes larger onset temperatures when compared to
its electron-type counterpart. This promises an intriguing possibility of the
high-temperature superconducting states in hole-doped complex materials. A
specific prediction of the present study is universality of ac conduction for

A cyclopentadienyl functionalized silylene-a flexible ligand for Si- And C-coordination
The synthesis of a 1,2,3,4-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp) substituted four-membered N-heterocyclic silylene [{PhC(NtBu) }Si(CMeH)] is reported first. Then, selected reactions with transition metal and a calcium precursor are shown. The proton of the Cp-unit is labile. This results in two different reaction pathways: (1) deprotonation and (2) rearrangement reactions. Deprotonation was achieved by the reaction of [{PhC(NtBu) }Si(CMeH)] with suitable zinc precursors. Rearrangement to [{PhC(NtBu) }(CMe)SiH], featuring a formally tetravalent silicon RCSi(R′)-H unit, was observed when the proton of the Cp ring was shifted from the Cp-ring to the silylene in the presence of a Lewis acid. This allows for the coordination of the Cp-ring to a calcium compound. Furthermore, upon reaction with transition metal dimers [MCl(cod)] (M = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) the proton stays at the Cp-ring and the silylene reacts as a sigma donor, which breaks the dimeric structure of the precursors
When does the action start and finish? Making the case for an ethnographic action research in educational research
This paper explores how ethnographic and action research methodologies can be justifiably combined to create a new methodological approach in educational research. It draws on existing examples in both educational research and
development studies that have discussed the use of ethnography and action research in specific projects. Interpretations of ethnography and action research
are developed that aim to minimise the epistemological differences between them.
The paper also contextualises an ‘ethnographic action research’ approach with reference to an example of the author’s research into participation in three ‘reception’ (first year of schooling) classes in the United Kingdom. It is argued that research into the theme of participation in early years education, using participative methods, was particularly suitable for this new methodological
approach
Disordered systems on various time scales: a-Si3B3N7 and homogeneous sintering
Modeling of materials systems for long times commonly requires the use of
separation of time scale methods. We discuss this general approach and present
two example systems, a-Si3B3N7 and the generation of homogeneous sinters.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
Reflectionless tunneling in ballistic normal-metal--superconductor junctions
We investigate the phenomenon of reflectionless tunneling in ballistic
normal-metal--superconductor (NS) structures, using a semiclassical formalism.
It is shown that applied magnetic field and superconducting phase difference
both impair the constructive interference leading to this effect, but in a
qualitatively different way. This is manifested both in the conductance and in
the shot noise properties of the system considered. Unlike diffusive systems,
the features of the conductance are sharp, and enable fine spatial control of
the current, as well as single channel manipulations. We discuss the
possibility of conducting experiments in ballistic semiconductor-superconductor
structures with smooth interfaces and some of the phenomena, specific to such
structures, that could be measured. A general criterion for the barrier at NS
interfaces, though large, to be effectively transparent to pair current is
obtained.Comment: published versio
Stringy NJL and Gross-Neveu models at finite density and temperature
Nonlocal stringy versions of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and Gross-Neveu models
arise in a certain limit of holographic QCD. We analyze the phase structure at
finite density and temperature at strong coupling in terms of probe branes in
the gravity dual. Comparison with the phase structure of the local field theory
models shows qualitative agreement with some aspects, and disagreement with
others. Finally, we explain how to construct the Landau potentials for these
models by taking the probe branes off-shell.Comment: 32 pages, uses JHEP3.cls; v2, references added, version to be
