Diffraction-contrast imaging of cold atoms
We consider the inverse problem of in-line holography, applied to
minimally-destructive imaging of cold atom clouds. Absorption imaging
near-resonance provides a simple, but destructive measurement of atom column
density. Imaging off resonance greatly reduces heating, and sequential images
may be taken. Under the conditions required for off-resonant imaging, the
generally-intractable inverse problem may be linearized. A
minimally-destructive, quantitative and high-resolution image of the atom cloud
column density is then retrieved from a single diffraction pattern.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures v2: minor changes in response to referee reports,

Non-resonant background suppression in preresonance CARS spectra of flavin adenine dinucleotide: Demonstration of a background suppression technique using phase mismatching and comparison with the polarization-sensitive CARS technique
Polarization-sensitive CARS spectra of a 5.7 × 10-3 mol dm-3 flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) solution were recorded under preresonance conditions at a pump wavelength of 532 nm. The depolarization ratios of the vibrations are shown to be close to the depolarization ratio of the non-resonant background. This results in a severe reduction of the vibration resonant signal (a factor of 700-900) in the polarization CARS spectrum, and a poor improvement in the ratio of the resonant signal and the non-resonant background (<10). \ud
In this context, a non-resonant background suppression technique is discussed and demonstrated for 5.7 × 10-3 and 1.4 × 10-3 mol dm-3 FAD solutions excited at 532 nm; the non-resonant susceptibility of the walls of the cuvette, which contains the FAD solution, is used to compensate the non-resonant signal contribution of the solution. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of ca. 50 is achieved at the cost of a factor of 30 in the resonant signal strength. Lorentzian-shaped spectral bands are obtained, facilitating the determination of band position, width and intensity. Line shape parameters and depolarization ratios for FAD are extracted from the presented spectra by curve fitting. The signal strength and background suppression achieved with these techniques and the resonance CARS technique (at a pump wavelength of 480 nm) are compared and discussed
Breeding for improved responsiveness to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in onion
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in the uptake of nutrients and water from soil. Onions, Allium cepa L., are plants with a shallow root system. As a result, onion plants need a lot of fertiziler for their growth. Furthermore, onion plants are sensitive to drought. The aim of the current research project is to study the beneficial effect of mycorrhizal fungi on the growth and development of Allium species and to determine whether it is possible to improve onions for mycorrhizal responsiveness by means of breeding. Variation among Allium species and segregation observed in a interspecific tri-hybrid population indicate that selection and thus breeding for high responsiveness to AMF is possible
Green Breeding: Bioimpuls Programme 2009-2013 - Perspectives on Phytophthora-resistant potato varieties
The heavy outbreaks of Phytophthora in 2007, and again in 2012, reconfirmed the need for resistant potato varieties for the organic sector. Until recently no such varieties were available. In 2009 the Bioimpulsprogramme was launched to give more priority to breeding organic, Phytophthora-resistant varieties. In this 10-year programme, wild potato species are crossed with cultivated potato to develop new resistant varieties. Although this classical breeding strategy is a long road, the advantage is that you can select for multiple traits along the way. This brochure presents the results of the first four years of the programme
Groene Veredeling: Popeye gaat duurzaam!
Relative intensity squeezing by four-wave mixing with loss: an analytic model and experimental diagnostic
Four-wave mixing near resonance in an atomic vapor can produce relative
intensity squeezed light suitable for precision measurements beyond the
shot-noise limit. We develop an analytic distributed gain/loss model to
describe the competition of mixing and absorption through the non-linear
medium. Using a novel matrix calculus, we present closed-form expressions for
the degree of relative intensity squeezing produced by this system. We use
these theoretical results to analyze experimentally measured squeezing from a
Rb vapor and demonstrate the analytic model's utility as an experimental
diagnostic.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
