Nano-porosity in GaSb induced by swift heavy ion irradiation
Nano-porous structures form in GaSb after ion irradiation with 185 MeV Au ions. The porous layer formation is governed by the dominant electronic energy loss at this energy regime. The porous layer morphology differs significantly from that previously reported for low-energy, ion-irradiated GaSb. Prior to the onset of porosity, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy indicates the formation of small vacancy clusters in single ion impacts, while transmission electron microscopy reveals fragmentation of the GaSb into nanocrystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix. Following this fragmentation process, macroscopic porosity forms, presumably within the amorphous phase.The authors thank the Australian Research Council for

Swift-heavy-ion-induced damage formation in III-V binary and ternary semiconductors
Damage formation in InP, GaP, InAs, GaAs, and the related ternary alloys Ga0.50 In0.50 P and Ga0.47 In0.53 As irradiated at room temperature with 185 MeV Au ions was studied using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy in channeling configuration, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle x-ray scattering. Despite nearly identical ion-energy loss in these materials, their behavior under swift-heavy-ion irradiation is strikingly different: InP and Ga0.50 In0.50 P are readily amorphized, GaP and GaAs remain almost undamaged and InAs and Ga0.47 In0.53 As exhibit intermediate behavior. A material-dependent combination of irradiation-induced damage formation and annealing is proposed to describe the different responses of the III-V materials to electronic energy loss
Energy dependent saturation width of swift heavy ion shaped embedded Au nanoparticles
The transformation of Aunanoparticles (NPs) embedded in SiOâ from spherical to rod-like shapes induced by swift heavy ion irradiation has been studied. Irradiation was performed with Âčâčâ·Au ions at energies between 54 and 185 MeV. Transmission electron microscopy and small angle x-ray scatteringmeasurements reveal an energy dependent saturation width of the NP rods as well as a minimum size required for the NPs to elongate. The NP saturation width is correlated with the ion track diameter in the SiOâ. The influence of annealing conditions on the growth and structure of embedded Pt nanocrystals
The growth and structure of Pt nanocrystals (NCs) formed by ion implantation in a-SiOâ has been investigated as a function of the annealing conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and small-angle x-ray scatteringmeasurements demonstrate that the annealing ambient has a significant influence on NC size. Samples annealed in either Ar, Oâ, or forming gas (95% Nâ: 5% Hâ) at temperatures ranging from 500â°Câ1300â°C form spherical NCs with mean diameters ranging from 1â14 nm. For a given temperature, annealing in Ar yields the smallest NCs. Oâ and forming gas ambients produce NCs of comparable size though the latter induces H chemisorption at 1100â°C and above, as verified with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. This H intake is accompanied by a bond-length expansion and increased structural disorder in NCs of diameter >3ânm.We thank the Australian Synchrotron Research Program

In a prospective cohort study in Denmark of 8736 randomly selected people, no evidence was found among 1011 subjects who developed cancer that self-reported stressful major life events had increased their risk for cancer
The importance of both setting and intensity of physical activity in relation to non-clinical anxiety and depression
Physical activity is associated with good physical and mental health. Current recommendations suggest that people should achieve 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week to gain health benefits. This activity may be accumulated in leisure time, in active commuting, at work or in the home. Here we look at the cross-sectional relationship between physical activity and mental health as measured by the HADS anxiety and depression scores in a sample of 1,742 participants from a Scottish general population survey. The participants were men and women in three age cohorts aged around 24, 44 and 64 years who, in 1995, were interviewed face to face and also self-completed the HADS depression and anxiety scale. Respondents reported their levels of physical activity at work, in the home and in leisure time; the intensities of activity were also determined. Physical activity was related to depression scores but not to anxiety scores. There was no relationship between work physical activity and depression score. Among women, depression score increased with each additional episode of vigorous home activity. In both sexes, depression score decreased with each additional episode of vigorous leisure activity, but among men the decrease in depression score with moderate leisure activity was reversed if a lot of moderate activity was undertaken. We have found a variable relationship between depression scores and various settings for physical activity. Researchers, policymakers and practitioners who are interested in the relationship between physical activity and mental health should take into account the setting for activity as well as frequency, duration and intensity of activity

Atomic scale structure and its impact on the band gap energy for Cu2Zn Sn,Ge Se4 kesterite alloys
Kesterite based materials gain more and more relevance in the pursuit of affordable, efficient and flexible absorber materials for thin film photovoltaics. Alloying Cu(2)ZnSnSe(4)with Ge could allow controlled band gap engineering as already established for Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)(2)based solar cells. This study investigates the local atomic arrangements of Cu2Zn(Sn,Ge)Se(4)alloys by means of low temperature Extended x-ray Absorbtion Fine Structure Spectroscopy. The element specific bond lengths are used together with x-ray diffraction data to derive the anion positions of the different local configurations.Ab initiotheoretical calculations are performed to predict the influence of structural parameters such as anion position and lattice constants on the band gap energy. Combining the results of the experimental and theoretical studies suggests that the overall influence of the structural changes on the band gap bowing due to alloying is significant yet smaller than the total non-linear change of the band gap energy. Consequently, it is concluded, that band gap bowing stems from both structural and electronic changes
Socioeconomic differences in adolescentsâ smoking: a comparison between Finland and Beijing, China
Background: Various studies have demonstrated the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and health
and health behaviour among adolescents. However, few studies have compared the socioeconomic difference in
adolescent smoking between countries with different stage of smoking. The purpose of this study was to examine
and compare the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and adolescent smoking in Beijing, China and
Finland through the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study.
Methods: The data used in this study were derived from the Chinese HBSC linked project survey 2008 in Beijing
and the Finnish HBSC survey 2006. The final sample included 2005 Chinese and 1685 Finnish 15-year-old
schoolchildren. The associations between Family Affluence Scale (FAS), as the SES measure, and adolescentsâ
smoking behaviour, including ever smoked, weekly smoking and the early onset of smoking were examined
separately in two countries through binary logistic regression.
Results: Compared to students from the high FAS group, Chinese boys from the low FAS group were more likely to
report having ever smoked (OR = 2.12, 95 % CI = 1.49â3.01) and being early onset of smoking (OR = 2.17, 95 % CI = 1.
44â3.26). Finnish girls from the low FAS group were more likely to report being weekly smokers (OR = 1.68, 95 % CI = 1.
07â2.65). No significant difference was found for Chinese girls and Finnish boys.
Conclusions: This study indicated different patterns of socioeconomic difference in smoking between Chinese and
Finnish adolescents by gender and by smoking behaviour, which suggests that socioeconomic inequalities in smoking
are different among adolescents in countries with different stage of smoking. Country specific policies and
interventions for different target groups should be encouraged and designed for reducing the prevalence of
adolescentsâ smoking.peerReviewe
How Are Adolescents Sleeping? Adolescent Sleep Patterns and Sociodemographic Differences in 24 European and North American Countries.
PURPOSE:Insufficient and poor sleep patterns are common among adolescents worldwide. Up to now, the evidence on adolescent sleep has been mostly informed by country-specific studies that used different measures and age groups, making direct comparisons difficult. Cross-national data on adolescent sleep that could inform nations and international discussions are lacking. We examined the sleep patterns of adolescents across 24 countries and by gender, age, and affluence groups. METHODS:We obtained sleep data on 165,793 adolescents (mean age 13.5Â years; 50.5% girls) in 24 European and North American countries from the recent cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-aged Children surveys (2013-2014 and 2017-2018). For each country, we calculated the age-standardized mean in sleep duration, timing, and consistency and the proportions meeting sleep recommendations on school and nonschool days from self-reported bedtimes and wake times. We conducted stratified analyses by gender, age, and family affluence group. RESULTS:Adolescent sleep patterns varied cross-nationally. The average sleep duration ranged between 7:47 and 9:07Â hours on school days and between 9:31 and 10:22 hours on nonschool days, and the proportion of adolescents meeting sleep recommendations ranged between 32% and 86% on school days and between 79% and 92% on nonschool days. Sleep patterns by gender and affluence groups were largely similar, but older adolescents slept less and went to bed later on school days than younger adolescents in all countries. CONCLUSIONS:The sleep patterns of adolescents vary across countries and sociodemographic groups. Insufficient sleep on school days is common in many countries. Public health and policy efforts to promote healthy adolescent sleep are encouraged
