Henry A. Wallace: Quixotic Crusade 1948
THE TWO-PARTY system has been a feature of the American political scene for all except a few brief periods in our history. Yet, during most of the last 130 years, the traditional two major parties have had in virtually every election at least one minor-party competitor. Despite this persistence, there has been a continuing pattern of failure. Never has an American third party been successful in displacing a major competitor. (Both the Whigs and the Republicans grew and came to power in two of those rare periods when a single major party was dominant.) The presidential campaign of 1948 was not exceptional in that it witnessed new minor-party challenges to Democratic and Republican supremacy. One of these movements took shape as Henry A. Wallace\u27s Progressive Party. The present study attempts to examine the background, the leaders, the organization, the campaign, and finally the disintegration of this third party. Magneto-optical study of electron occupation and hole wave functions in stacked self-assembled InP quantum dots
We have studied the magnetophotoluminescence of doubly stacked layers of self-assembled InP quantum dots in a GaInP matrix. 4.0±0.1 monolayers of InP were deposited in the lower layer of each sample, whereas in the upper layer 3.9, 3.4, and 3.0 monolayers were used. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements in zero magnetic field are used to show that, in each case, only one layer of dots is occupied by an electron, and imply that when the amount of InP in both layers is the same, the dots in the upper layer are larger. High-field photoluminescence data reveal that the position and extent of the hole wave function are strongly dependent on the amount of InP in the stack. ©2001 American Institute of Physics
The Dusty Starburst Nucleus of M33
We have thoroughly characterized the ultraviolet to near-infrared (0.15 - 2.2
micron) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the central parsec of the M33
nucleus through new infrared photometry and optical/near-infrared spectroscopy,
combined with ultraviolet/optical observations from the literature and the HST
archive. The SED shows evidence for a significant level of attenuation, which
we model through a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code as a shell of clumpy
Milky Way-type dust (tau_V ~ 2 +/- 1). The discovery of Milky Way-type dust
(with a strong 2175 A bump) internal to the M33 nucleus is different from
previous work which has found SMC-like dust (no bump) near starburst regions.
The amount by which dust can be processed may be related to the mass and age of
the starburst as well as the extent to which the dust can shield itself. Our
starburst models include the effects of this dust and can fit the SED if the
nucleus was the site of a moderate (~10^8 L_sun at 10 Myrs) episode of coeval
star formation about 70 Myrs ago. This result is quite different from previous
studies which resorted to multiple stellar populations (between 2 and 7)
attenuated by either no or very little internal dust. The M33 nuclear starburst
is remarkably similar to an older version (70 Myr versus 10 Myr) of the

Sodium Brightening of (3200) Phaethon Near Perihelion
Sunskirting asteroid (3200) Phaethon has been repeatedly observed in STEREO
HI1 imagery to anomalously brighten and produce an antisunward tail for a few
days near each perihelion passage, phenomena previously attributed to the
ejection of micron-sized dust grains. Color imaging by the SOHO LASCO
coronagraphs during the 2022 May apparition indicate that the observed
brightening and tail development instead capture the release of sodium atoms,
which resonantly fluoresce at the 589.0/589.6 nm D lines. While HI1's design
bandpass nominally excludes the D lines, filter degradation has substantially
increased its D line sensitivity, as quantified by the brightness of Mercury's
sodium tail in HI1 imagery. Furthermore, the expected fluorescence efficiency
and acceleration of sodium atoms under solar radiation readily reproduce both
the photometric and morphological behaviors observed by LASCO and HI1 during
the 2022 apparition and the 17 earlier apparitions since 1997. This finding
connects Phaethon to the broader population of sunskirting and sungrazing
comets observed by SOHO, which often also exhibit bright sodium emission with
minimal visible dust, but distinguishes it from other sunskirting asteroids
without detectable sodium production under comparable solar heating. These
differences may reflect variations in the degree of sodium depletion of
near-surface material, and thus the extent and/or timing of any past or present

Unitary Positive-Energy Representations of Scalar Bilocal Quantum Fields
The superselection sectors of two classes of scalar bilocal quantum fields in
D>=4 dimensions are explicitly determined by working out the constraints
imposed by unitarity. The resulting classification in terms of the dual of the
respective gauge groups U(N) and O(N) confirms the expectations based on
general results obtained in the framework of local nets in algebraic quantum
field theory, but the approach using standard Lie algebra methods rather than
abstract duality theory is complementary. The result indicates that one does
not lose interesting models if one postulates the absence of scalar fields of
dimension D-2 in models with global conformal invariance. Another remarkable
outcome is the observation that, with an appropriate choice of the Hamiltonian,
a Lie algebra embedded into the associative algebra of observables completely
