Energy Gap from Tunneling and Metallic Sharvin Contacts onto MgB2: Evidence for a Weakened Surface Layer
Point-contact tunnel junctions using a Au tip on sintered MgB2 pellets reveal
a sharp superconducting energy gap that is confirmed by subsequent metallic
Sharvin contacts made on the same sample. The peak in the tunneling conductance
and the Sharvin contact conductance follow the BCS form, but the gap values of
4.3 meV are less than the weak-coupling BCS value of 5.9 meV for the bulk Tc of
39 K. The low value of Delta compared to the BCS value for the bulk Tc is
possibly due to chemical reactions at the surface.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Negative Kaons in Dense Baryonic Matter
Kaon polarization operator in dense baryonic matter of arbitrary isotopic
composition is calculated including s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions. The
regular part of the polarization operator is extracted from the realistic
kaon-nucleon interaction based on the chiral and 1/N_c expansion. Contributions
of the Lambda(1116), Sigma(1195), Sigma*(1385) resonances are taken explicitly
into account in the pole and regular terms with inclusion of mean-field
potentials. The baryon-baryon correlations are incorporated and fluctuation
contributions are estimated. Results are applied for K- in neutron star matter.
Within our model a second-order phase transition to the s-wave K- condensate
state occurs at rho_c \gsim 4 \rho_0 once the baryon-baryon correlations are
included. We show that the second-order phase transition to the p-wave
condensate state may occur at densities in
dependence on the parameter choice. We demonstrate that a first-order phase
transition to a proton-enriched (approximately isospin-symmetric) nucleon
matter with a p-wave K- condensate can occur at smaller densities, \rho\lsim 2
\rho_0. The transition is accompanied by the suppression of hyperon
concentrations.Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures, revtex4 styl
Inherent thermometry in a hybrid superconducting tunnel junction
We discuss inherent thermometry in a Superconductor - Normal metal -
Superconductor tunnel junction. In this configuration, the energy selectivity
of single-particle tunneling can provide a significant electron cooling,
depending on the bias voltage. The usual approach for measuring the electron
temperature consists in using an additional pair of superconducting tunnel
junctions as probes. In this paper, we discuss our experiment performed on a
different design with no such thermometer. The quasi-equilibrium in the central
metallic island is discussed in terms of a kinetic equation including injection
and relaxation terms. We determine the electron temperature by comparing the
micro-cooler experimental current-voltage characteristic with isothermal
theoretical predictions. The limits of validity of this approach, due to the
junctions asymmetry, the Andreev reflection or the presence of sub-gap states
are discussed
Spin-1/2 J1-J2 model on the body-centered cubic lattice
Using exact diagonalization (ED) and linear spin wave theory (LSWT) we study
the influence of frustration and quantum fluctuations on the magnetic ordering
in the ground state of the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2
model) on the body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice. Contrary to the J1-J2 model on
the square lattice, we find for the bcc lattice that frustration and quantum
fluctuations do not lead to a quantum disordered phase for strong frustration.
The results of both approaches (ED, LSWT) suggest a first order transition at
J2/J1 0.7 from the two-sublattice Neel phase at low J2 to a collinear
phase at large J2.Comment: 6.1 pages 7 figure
Oscillating magnetoresistance in diluted magnetic semiconductor barrier structures
Ballistic spin polarized transport through diluted magnetic semiconductor
(DMS) single and double barrier structures is investigated theoretically using
a two-component model. The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of the system
exhibits oscillating behavior when the magnetic field are varied. An
interesting beat pattern in the TMR and spin polarization is found for
different NMS/DMS double barrier structures which arises from an interplay
between the spin-up and spin-down electron channels which are splitted by the
s-d exchange interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Relative Equilibria in the Four-Vortex Problem with Two Pairs of Equal Vorticities
We examine in detail the relative equilibria in the four-vortex problem where
two pairs of vortices have equal strength, that is, \Gamma_1 = \Gamma_2 = 1 and
\Gamma_3 = \Gamma_4 = m where m is a nonzero real parameter. One main result is
that for m > 0, the convex configurations all contain a line of symmetry,
forming a rhombus or an isosceles trapezoid. The rhombus solutions exist for
all m but the isosceles trapezoid case exists only when m is positive. In fact,
there exist asymmetric convex configurations when m < 0. In contrast to the
Newtonian four-body problem with two equal pairs of masses, where the symmetry
of all convex central configurations is unproven, the equations in the vortex
case are easier to handle, allowing for a complete classification of all
solutions. Precise counts on the number and type of solutions (equivalence
classes) for different values of m, as well as a description of some of the
bifurcations that occur, are provided. Our techniques involve a combination of
analysis and modern and computational algebraic geometry
Low temperature electronic properties of Sr_2RuO_4 II: Superconductivity
The body centered tetragonal structure of Sr_2RuO_4 gives rise to umklapp
scattering enhanced inter-plane pair correlations in the d_{yz} and d_{zx}
orbitals. Based on symmetry arguments, Hund's rule coupling, and a bosonized
description of the in-plane electron correlations the superconducting order
parameter is found to be a orbital-singlet spin-triplet with two spatial
components. The spatial anisotropy is 7%. The different components of the order
parameter give rise to two-dimensional gapless fluctuations. The phase
transition is of third order. The temperature dependence of the pair density,
specific heat, NQR, Knight shift, and susceptibility are in agreement with
experimental results.Comment: 20 pages REVTEX, 3 figure
Low temperature electronic properties of Sr_2RuO_4 III: Magnetic fields
Based on the microscopic model introduced previously the observed specific
heat and ac-susceptibility data in the superconducting phase in Sr_2RuO_4 with
applied magnetic fields are described consistently within a phenomenological
approach. Discussed in detail are the temperature dependence of the upper
critical fields H_{c2} and H_2, the dependence of the upper critical fields on
the field direction, the linear specific heat below the superconducting phase
transition as a function of field or temperature, the anisotropy of the two
spatial components of the order parameter, and the fluctuation field H_p.Comment: 8 pages REVTEX, 4 figure
K -> pi pi and a light scalar meson
We explore the Delta-I= 1/2 rule and epsilon'/epsilon in K -> pi pi
transitions using a Dyson-Schwinger equation model. Exploiting the feature that
QCD penguin operators direct K^0_S transitions through 0^{++} intermediate
states, we find an explanation of the enhancement of I=0 K -> pi pi transitions
in the contribution of a light sigma-meson. This mechanism also affects
epsilon'/epsilon.Comment: 7 pages, REVTE
