    Fire Management In Veredas (palm Swamps): New Perspectives On Traditional Farming Systems In JalapĂŁo, Brazil

    The veredas (palm swamps) of the cerrado biome are legally protected as áreas de Preservação Permanente (Permanent Preservation Areas), and the use of fire in these wetlands is prohibited. We carried out a preliminary assessment of environmental impacts of the local use of agricultural fire in veredas through a collaborative research project in Jalapão (Tocantins, Brazil). We found that "roças de esgoto" (drained peat swamp swidden fields) form the basis of the agricultural system of this region. These fields ensure production throughout the year, provide more income than "roças de toco" (rainfed swidden fields), and may function as a repository of agrobiodiversity on a regional scale. This study suggests that the use of fire in veredas associated with roças de esgoto does not lead to significant deforestation, that is, to the disappearance of the forest physiognomy, but instead helps maintain tree cover during the fallow period, possibly accelerating natural succession.19326929

    Photon Splitting in a Strong Magnetic Field: Recalculation and Comparison With Previous Calculations

    We recalculate the amplitude for photon splitting in a strong magnetic field below the pair production threshold, using the worldline path integral variant of the Bern--Kosower formalism. Numerical comparison (using programs that we have made available for public access on the Internet) shows that the results of the recalculation are identical to the earlier calculations of Adler and later of Stoneham, and to the recent recalculation by Baier, Milstein, and Shaisultanov.Comment: Revtex, 9 pages, no figure

    It is shown within the weak-coupling model that the macroscopic superconducting anisotropy for materials with the gap varying on the Fermi surface cannot be characterized by a single number, unlike the case of clean materials with isotropic gaps. For clean uniaxial materials, the anisotropy parameter γ(T)\gamma (T) defined as the ratio of London penetration depths, λc/λab\lambda_c/\lambda_{ab}, is evaluated for all TT's. Within the two-gap model of MgB2_2, γ(T)\gamma (T) is an increasing function of TT.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Generation of continuous variable squeezing and entanglement of trapped ions in time-varying potentials

    We investigate the generation of squeezing and entanglement for the motional degrees of freedom of ions in linear traps, confined by time-varying and oscillating potentials, comprised of an DC and an AC component. We show that high degrees of squeezing and entanglement can be obtained by controlling either the DC or the AC trapping component (or both), and by exploiting transient dynamics in regions where the ions' motion is unstable, without any added optical control.     We propose two probabilistic entanglement concentration schemes for a single copy of two-mode squeezed vacuum state. The first scheme is based on the off-resonant interaction of a Rydberg atom with the cavity field while the second setup involves the cross Kerr interaction, auxiliary mode prepared in a strong coherent state and a homodyne detection. We show that the continuous-variable entanglement concentration allows us to improve the fidelity of teleportation of coherent states.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling in Superconducting MgB2_2: A Specific Heat Study

    We report on measurements of the specific heat of the recently discovered superconductor MgB2_2 in the temperature range between 3 and 220 K. Based on a modified Debye-Einstein model, we have achieved a rather accurate account of the lattice contribution to the specific heat, which allows us to separate the electronic contribution from the total measured specific heat. From our result for the electronic specific heat, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant λ\lambda to be of the order of 2, significantly enhanced compared to common weak-coupling values ≤0.4\leq 0.4. Our data also indicate that the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state of MgB2_2 can be accounted for by a conventional, s-wave type BCS-model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Energy Gap from Tunneling and Metallic Sharvin Contacts onto MgB2: Evidence for a Weakened Surface Layer

    Point-contact tunnel junctions using a Au tip on sintered MgB2 pellets reveal a sharp superconducting energy gap that is confirmed by subsequent metallic Sharvin contacts made on the same sample. The peak in the tunneling conductance and the Sharvin contact conductance follow the BCS form, but the gap values of 4.3 meV are less than the weak-coupling BCS value of 5.9 meV for the bulk Tc of 39 K. The low value of Delta compared to the BCS value for the bulk Tc is possibly due to chemical reactions at the surface.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Superconducting anisotropy and evidence for intrinsic pinning in single crystalline MgB2_2

    We examine the superconducting anisotropy γc=(mc/mab)1/2\gamma_c = (m_c / m_{ab})^{1/2} of a metallic high-TcT_c superconductor MgB2_2 by measuring the magnetic torque of a single crystal. The anisotropy γc\gamma_c does not depend sensitively on the applied magnetic field at 10 K. We obtain the anisotropy parameter γc=4.31±0.14\gamma_c = 4.31 \pm 0.14. The torque curve shows the sharp hysteresis peak when the field is applied parallel to the boron layers. This comes from the intrinsic pinning and is experimental evidence for the occurrence of superconductivity in the boron layers.Comment: REVTeX 4, To be published in Physical Review
