    SN~1991T: Reflections of Past Glory

We have obtained photometry and spectra of SN~1991T which extend more than 1000 days past maximum light, by far the longest a SN~Ia has been followed. Although SN~1991T exhibited nearly normal photometric behavior in the first 400 days following maximum, by 600 days its decline had slowed, and by 950~days the supernova brightness was consistent with a constant apparent magnitude of mB=21.30m_B=21.30. Spectra near maximum showed minor variations on the SN~Ia theme which grew less conspicuous during the exponential decline. At 270 days the nebular spectrum was composed of Fe and Co lines common to SNe~Ia. However, by 750 days past maximum light, these lines had shifted in wavelength, and were superimposed on a strong blue continuum. The luminosity of SN~1991T at 950 days is more than 9.0×1038(D/13 Mpc)29.0\times10^{38}(D/13~{\rm Mpc})^2~ergs~s−1^{-1} with a rate of decline of less than 0.040.04 mags/100~days. We show that this emission is likely to be light that was emitted by SN~1991T near maximum light which has reflected from foreground dust, much like the light echos observed around SN~1987A.Comment: 15 pages (includes figures and tables) uuencoded compressed postscript, CfA Preprint - To Appear in ApJ

Oral dosing for antenatal corticosteroids in the Rhesus macaque.

Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are standard of care for women at risk of preterm delivery, although choice of drug, dose or route have not been systematically evaluated. Further, ACS are infrequently used in low resource environments where most of the mortality from prematurity occurs. We report proof of principle experiments to test betamethasone-phosphate (Beta-P) or dexamethasone-phosphate (Dex-P) given orally in comparison to the clinical treatment with the intramuscular combination drug beta-phosphate plus beta-acetate in a Rhesus Macaque model. First, we performed pharmacokinetic studies in non-pregnant monkeys to compare blood levels of the steroids using oral dosing with Beta-P, Dex-P and an effective maternal intramuscular dose of the beta-acetate component of the clinical treatment. We then evaluated maternal and fetal blood steroid levels with limited fetal sampling under ultrasound guidance in pregnant macaques. We found that oral Beta is more slowly cleared from plasma than oral Dex. The blood levels of both drugs were lower in maternal plasma of pregnant than in non-pregnant macaques. Using the pharmacokinetic data, we treated groups of 6-8 pregnant monkeys with oral Beta-P, oral Dex-P, or the maternal intramuscular clinical treatment and saline controls and measured pressure-volume curves to assess corticosteroid effects on lung maturation at 5d. Oral Beta-P improved the pressure-volume curves similarly to the clinical treatment. Oral Dex-P gave more variable and nonsignificant responses. We then compared gene expression in the fetal lung, liver and hippocampus between oral Beta-P and the clinical treatment by RNA-sequencing. The transcriptomes were largely similar with small gene expression differences in the lung and liver, and no differences in the hippocampus between the groups. As proof of principle, ACS therapy can be effective using inexpensive and widely available oral drugs. Clinical dosing strategies must carefully consider the pharmacokinetics of oral Beta-P or Dex-P to minimize fetal exposure while achieving the desired treatment responses

SN1997cy/GRB970514 - A New Piece in the GRB Puzzle?

We present observations of SN1997cy, a supernova discovered as part of the Mount Stromlo Abell Cluster SN Search, which does not easily fit into the traditional classification scheme for supernovae. This object's extraordinary optical properties and coincidence with GRB970514, a short duration gamma ray burst, suggest a second case, after SN1998bw/GRB980425, for a SN-GRB association. SN1997cy is among the most luminous SNe yet discovered and has a peculiar spectrum. We present evidence that SN1997cy ejected approximately 2 solar masses of 56Ni, supported by its late-time light curve, and FeII/[FeIII] lines in its spectrum, although it is possible that both these observations can be explained via circumstellar interaction. While SN1998bw and SN1997cy appear to be very different objects with respect to both their gamma ray and optical properties, SN1997cy and the optical transient associated with GRB970508 have roughly similar late-time optical behavior. This similarity may indicate that the late-time optical output of these two intrinsically bright transient events have a common physical process. Although the connection between GRB970514 and SN1997cy is suggestive, it is not conclusive. However, if this association is real, followup of short duration GRBs detected with BATSE or HETE2 should reveal objects similar to SN1997cy.Comment: 26 pages including 6 postscript figures and 3 tables. Min-ordering and max-ordering scalarization methods for multi-objective robust optimization

    Get PDF
Several robustness concepts for multi-objective uncertain optimization have been developed during the last years, but not many solution methods. In this paper we introduce two methods to find min–max robust efficient solutions based on scalarizations: the min-ordering and the max-ordering method. We show that all point-based min–max robust weakly efficient solutions can be found with the max-ordering method and that the min-ordering method finds set-based min–max robust weakly efficient solutions, some of which cannot be found with formerly developed scalarization based methods. We then show how the scalarized problems may be approached for multi-objective uncertain combinatorial optimization problems with special uncertainty sets. We develop compact mixed-integer linear programming formulations for multi-objective extensions of bounded uncertainty (also known as budgeted or Γ-uncertainty). For interval uncertainty, we show that the resulting problems reduce to well-known single-objective problems
