Conceptualizing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as a Supportive-Educative Nursing System for Patients with Insomnia

Difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep is one of the most common health complaints of the general population. Approximately 35-50% of people experience occasional insomnia symptoms (Walsh et al., 2011) while 12-20% have insomnia disorder (Morin, et al., 2011; Roth et al., 2011). An effective treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I; Schutte-Rodin, Broch, Buysse, Dorsey, & Sateia, 2008), a nonpharmacological, evidence-based intervention aimed at changing sleep behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to frame CBT-I as a nursing intervention for insomnia within the context of Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory (Orem, 2001). Orem’s theory provides a framework from which to view the process of improving patients’ sleep using CBT-I as a supportive-educative nursing system. Through the therapies of CBT-I, patients develop the power components of selfcare agency resulting in behavior change, which is consistent with Orem’s notion of deliberate action and self-care. Because holistic patient care, support, and patient teaching are fundamental aspects of nursing care to which nurses are acculturated, nurses are ideally suited to provide CBT-I

Chief Executive Officers of California Environmental Organizations: A Study of Personal Values Congruence with Organizational Mission

This study surveyed the Chief Executive Officers of 300 California environmental organizations to investigate whether these officers were personally committed to their organizations\u27 missions as demonstrated by 1) past and present activities in their personal lives that indicated personal values similar to those espoused by the organization, and 2) their intent to stay with their organization. It was hypothesized that the level of activity in the personal lives of the CEOs demonstrating personal commitment to their organizations would be positively related to their intent to stay with their organizations. It was also expected that there would be a negative association between the size of the environmental organization, and the amount of evidence indicating that the CEO had personal values that were congruent with those of the organization\u27s mission. This study demonstrated that the congruence of CEO personal values and organizational mission had a significantly positive effect on the intended length of stay of CEOs with their organizations. It also substantiated that individuals with high levels of values congruence (and therefore intent to stay) were strongly influenced by the environmental mission of the organization when accepting their current position. This has implications for the selection of future chief executive officers

Determinants of estimated face composite quality

Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (p. 142-157 ).This thesis addresses the evaluation of an investigative tool commonly used by police forces around the world, namely a face composite or facial likeness. The process of constructing a composite involves a number of cognitive elements, all of which contribute to the final composite quality. This thesis examines elements of the construction process and assessment of the final composite quality in research and practice. There are three main aspects to the empirical work reported here. The first, consisting of two experimental studies, investigates the possibility of reinstating context as a way of improving composite quality. The second examines composite construction and use within the South African Police Service. The third examined the measurement of composite quality itself

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Connections of Tet3 Dioxygenase with CXXC Zinc Finger Modules.

Tet proteins are emerging as major epigenetic modulators of cell fate and plasticity. However, little is known about how Tet proteins are targeted to selected genomic loci in distinct biological contexts. Previously, a CXXC-type zinc finger domain in Tet1 was shown to bind CpG-rich DNA sequences. Interestingly, in human and mouse the Tet2 and Tet3 genes are adjacent to Cxxc4 and Cxxc10-1, respectively. The CXXC domains encoded by these loci, together with those in Tet1 and Cxxc5, identify a distinct homology group within the CXXC domain family. Here we provide evidence for alternative mouse Tet3 transcripts including the Cxxc10-1 sequence (Tet3(CXXC)) and for an interaction between Tet3 and Cxxc4. In vitro Cxxc4 and the isolated CXXC domains of Tet1 and Tet3(CXXC) bind DNA substrates with similar preference towards the modification state of cytosine at a single CpG site. In vivo Tet1 and Tet3 isoforms with and without CXXC domain hydroxylate genomic 5-methylcytosine with similar activity. Relative transcript levels suggest that distinct ratios of Tet3(CXXC) isoforms and Tet3-Cxxc4 complex may be present in adult tissues. Our data suggest that variable association with CXXC modules may contribute to context specific functions of Tet proteins

A New Family of Copulas, with Application to Estimation of a Production Frontier System

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a new family of copulas for which the copula arguments are uncorrelated but dependent. Specifically, if w1 and w2 are the uniform random variables in the copula, they are uncorrelated, but w1 is correlated with |w2 - ½|. We show how this family of copulas can be applied to the error structure in an econometric production frontier model. We also generalize the family of copulas to three or more dimensions, and we give an empirical application
