Photoemission of a doped Mott insulator: spectral weight transfer and qualitative Mott-Hubbard description
The spectral weight evolution of the low-dimensional Mott insulator TiOCl
upon alkali-metal dosing has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy. We
observe a spectral weight transfer between the lower Hubbard band and an
additional peak upon electron-doping, in line with quantitative expectations in
the atomic limit for changing the number of singly and doubly occupied sites.
This observation is an unconditional hallmark of correlated bands and has not
been reported before. In contrast, the absence of a metallic quasiparticle peak

K-shell x-ray spectroscopy of atomic nitrogen
Absolute {\it K}-shell photoionization cross sections for atomic nitrogen
have been obtained from both experiment and state-of-the-art theoretical
techniques. Due to the difficulty of creating a target of neutral atomic
nitrogen, no high-resolution {\it K}-edge spectroscopy measurements have been
reported for this important atom. Interplay between theory and experiment
enabled identification and characterization of the strong
resonance features throughout the threshold region. An experimental value

High transport currents in mechanically reinforced MgB2 wires
We prepared and characterized monofilamentary MgB2 wires with a mechanically
reinforced composite sheath of Ta(Nb)/Cu/steel, which leads to dense filaments
and correspondingly high transport currents up to Jc = 10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K,
self field. The reproducibility of the measured transport currents was
excellent and not depending on the wire diameter. Using different precursors,
commercial reacted powder or an unreacted Mg/B powder mixture, a strong
influence on the pinning behaviour and the irreversibility field was observed.
The critical transport current density showed a nearly linear temperature
dependency for all wires being still 52 kA/cm^2 at 20 K and 23 kA/cm^2 at 30 K.

Woman as healer: a dialogical narrative analysis of online brain tumour (GBM) caregiving stories
A diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a World Health Organisation (WHO) grade IV brain tumour, is devastating for patients and their families who bear the impetus of caregiving. GBM caregivers act as de facto health professionals when their loved ones are discharged prematurely from hospitals. Faced with complex healthcare needs, GBM caregivers report the highest psychological burden, and highest unmet needs of all cancer caregivers. Despite this, they rarely accessed rehabilitation services. Researchers hardly engaged with their stories. The current research on GBM caregiving is predominantly from a biomedical perspective, not only offering limited understandings of psychosocial experiences, but also, evidencing the need for caregiver stories in caregiving research.
The researcher recruited 7 bereaved caregivers, who had previously narrated stories online about caring for their loved ones diagnosed with GBM and; consented to the use of their stories as research data. These stories covered a period of between 1-3+ years, throughout the illness trajectory and post-bereavement. The researcher further conducted email interviews focussed on the retrospective perspectives of sharing stories online. Participants provided feedback on the preliminary findings of the DNA. The findings consisted of multiple layers of interpretations drawn from social constructionism, narrative and feminist relational theories, beginning with subjective stories, collective story typologies and core narratives, thereby illuminating the relationships between GBM caregivers, the stories they narrated and the event of narrating stories online. An additional layer of interpretation served to shed light on the relational, dialogical, performative and hindsight perspectives of storytelling and the storytelling landscape. This research decentres the dominance of biomedicine in caregiving research to present a perspective from GBM caregivers using their own stories, in their own voices, so as to inform counselling psychology research and practice
Protozoan parasite babesia microti subverts adaptive immunity and enhances lyme disease severity
Lyme disease is the most prominent tick-borne disease in the United States. Co-infections with the tick-transmitted pathogens Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto are becoming a serious health problem. B. burgdorferi is an extracellular spirochete that causes Lyme disease while B. microti is a protozoan that infects erythrocytes and causes babesiosis. Testing of donated blood for Babesia species is not currently mandatory due to unavailability of an FDA approved test. Transmission of this protozoan by blood transfusion often results in high morbidity and mortality in recipients. Infection of C3H/HeJ mice with B. burgdorferi and B. microti individually results in inflammatory Lyme disease and display of human babesiosis-like symptoms, respectively. Here we use this mouse model to provide a detailed investigation of the reciprocal influence of the two pathogens on each other during coinfection. We show that B. burgdorferi infection attenuates parasitemia in mice while B. microti subverts the splenic immune response, such that a marked decrease in splenic B and T cells, reduction in antibody levels and diminished functional humoral immunity, as determined by spirochete opsonophagocytosis, are observed in co-infected mice compared to only B. burgdorferi infected mice. Furthermore, immunosuppression by B. microti in coinfected mice showed an association with enhanced Lyme disease manifestations. This study demonstrates the effect of only simultaneous infection by B. burgdorferi and B. microti on each pathogen, immune response and on disease manifestations with respect to infection by the spirochete and the parasite. In our future studies, we will examine the overall effects of sequential infection by these pathogens on host immune responses and disease outcomes.
