Isolation of white wine volatiles using different sample preparation methods

    Get PDF
Three sample preparation methods for gas chromatographic analysis of white wine volatiles were tested. In order to find an adequate replacement for common liquidliquid extraction using 1,1,1-trichlorofluoromethan, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) were tested. SPME and SBSE sample preparations are characterized by rapid and easy handling, small sample size and the possibility of automation, but the recovery of aroma compounds is restricted because of the discrimination properties of the polymer phase. Unlike SPME, the results obtained by SBSE are more similar to those of liquid-liquid extraction.

Stanisław Barańczak: Between autonomy and support

Stanisław Barańczak (1946-2014), a leading poet of the Polish ‘New Wave’ formation, dissident intellectual, prolific translator and, from the early 1980s until his recent death, an émigré and professor at Harvard University, remains one of the most prominent translation critics and literary figures in Poland. This article attempts to revisit his first theoretical paper on literary translation entitled ‘Przekład jako “samoistny” i “związany” obiekt interpretacji’ [The Translation as a 'Self-sufficient' and 'Integrated' Object of Interpretation] ([1972] 1974) and to present his early scholarship within the Structuralist framework of literary communication. In academic criticism this particular text has generally been misinterpreted: it has usually been deemed analytically unhelpful and believed to reiterate some of the clichés of Translation Studies. This article will attempt to discard those oversimplified interpretations by establishing a bridge between Barańczak’s theoretical claims and his own translation practice. The concept of translation as a “self-sufficient” and “integrated” object of interpretation will be discussed with special reference to the way Barańczak himself later constructed and published his own literary translations, his ethical approach to autonomy and support in translation, as well as the general intellectual and literary context of that time

SLIOS: a contribution to standard procedures in stray light measurements

    No full text
Light scattering measurements are important tools for characterizing optical surfaces can basically be divided into two main groups: total scatter measurements (TS) and Angle Resolved Scattering (ARS). Since TS measurements are fairly straight forward and widely used, international standardization has formulated an international draft standard on it, ISO/DIS 13696. ARS is a more complex method and not as common as TS measurements. However ARS data in form of the Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution FUnction (BRDF) can be used to predict stray light in Laser and Industrial Optical Systems. Because of increasing importance of this topic the EC is sponsoring a project regarding 'Standard procedures for stray light specification, measurement and testing - SLIOS'. During the project two of the activities are: performing a round robin experiment of measuring BRDF data at 5 different sites including some complementary techniques; compiling of an open access data base of measured BRDF data, measured according to procedures agreed upon between the SLIOS partners and proposed for 'Standard Procedures'. Results of these two activities will be presented
