    Splitting and blaming: The psychic life of neoliberal executive women

    The aim of the article is to explore the psychic life of executive women under neoliberalism using psychosocial approaches. The article shows how, despite enduring unfair treatment and access to opportunities, many executive women remain emotionally invested in upholding the neoliberal ideal that if one perseveres, one shall be successful, regardless of gender. Drawing on psychosocial approaches, we explore how the accounts given by some executive women of repudiation, as denying gender inequality, and individualization, as subjects completely agentic, are underpinned by the unconscious, intertwined processes of splitting and blaming. Women sometimes split off undesirable aspects of the workplace, which repudiates gender inequality, or blame other women, which individualizes failure and responsibility for change. We explain that splitting and blaming enable some executive women to manage the anxiety evoked from threats to the neoliberal ideal of the workplace. This article thereby makes a contribution to existing postfeminist scholarship by integrating psychosocial approaches to the study of the psychic life of neoliberal executive women, by exploring why they appear unable to engage directly with and redress instances of gender discrimination in the workplace

    Language development after cochlear implantation: an epigenetic model

    Growing evidence supports the notion that dynamic gene expression, subject to epigenetic control, organizes multiple influences to enable a child to learn to listen and to talk. Here, we review neurobiological and genetic influences on spoken language development in the context of results of a longitudinal trial of cochlear implantation of young children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in the Childhood Development after Cochlear Implantation study. We specifically examine the results of cochlear implantation in participants who were congenitally deaf (N = 116). Prior to intervention, these participants were subject to naturally imposed constraints in sensory (acoustic–phonologic) inputs during critical phases of development when spoken language skills are typically achieved rapidly. Their candidacy for a cochlear implant was prompted by delays (n = 20) or an essential absence of spoken language acquisition (n = 96). Observations thus present an opportunity to evaluate the impact of factors that influence the emergence of spoken language, particularly in the context of hearing restoration in sensitive periods for language acquisition. Outcomes demonstrate considerable variation in spoken language learning, although significant advantages exist for the congenitally deaf children implanted prior to 18 months of age. While age at implantation carries high predictive value in forecasting performance on measures of spoken language, several factors show significant association, particularly those related to parent–child interactions. Importantly, the significance of environmental variables in their predictive value for language development varies with age at implantation. These observations are considered in the context of an epigenetic model in which dynamic genomic expression can modulate aspects of auditory learning, offering insights into factors that can influence a child’s acquisition of spoken language after cochlear implantation. Increased understanding of these interactions could lead to targeted interventions that interact with the epigenome to influence language outcomes with intervention, particularly in periods in which development is subject to time-sensitive experience

    In ‘SlutWalk, Feminism and News,’ Mendes uses the global SlutWalk movement as a case study to assess how, and to what extent, the relationship between SlutWalk and feminism has been represented in global mainstream news. The chapter asks to what extent feminism has been erased or made visible? Are SlutWalks and its participants constructed as part of a larger feminist movement? What kinds of feminism are addressed in coverage? Through analysing 284 news articles, Mendes argues that mainstream news media erased feminism, not only through its wide-scale absence, but through active repudiation and insistence on its redundancy, thereby contributing to a long-standing backlash against feminism

    Collaborative Development of Clinical Trials Education Programs for African-American Community-Based Organizations

    This paper describes the use of a unique ”Learning and Feedback” approach to tailor cancer clinical trials education programs for Community Bridges, a peer training intervention designed for African American communities in North Carolina. Generic community education modules were demonstrated with key community leaders who were designated as trainers. Quantitative and qualitative assessments were provided on understanding of content, comfort with material and cultural relevance. The generic materials were adapted into three revised modules, all featuring key messages about cancer clinical trials, discussion regarding distrust of medical research, common misconceptions about trials, patient protections, and a call to action to prompt increased inquiry about locally available trials. The revised modules were then used as part of a train-the-trainer program with 12 African American community leaders. ENACCT’s use of the Learning and Feedback process is an innovative method for culturally adapting clinical trials education

    Social Networking Sites Withdrawal

    The importance of the users for the survival of a social networking site is vital. For this reason, most of the research about this topic is focused about how to make the user to participate on the network. However, little has been researched about the reasons why a user would decide to close its account and leave the network for good. This research is aimed to study this phenomenon based on the Social Identity Theory, specifically the disidentification concept. The research implemented the means-end chain methodology using the data collected from in-depth interviews to 26 adults who have closed an SNS account. This data was analyzed through content analysis and using Social Network Analysis as an alternative to map the chains suggested by the means end chain methodology, as well as providing more information based on the centrality measures. The findings suggest that impression management, friendship, time management and emotional stability play a central role to take the withdrawal decision
