My vision on Indian fisheries of the 21st century
In evaluating important producers in the next decade, the FAO
predicts that India, China and Indonesia will be the countries with largest
potential all over the world. It has been found that small and marginal land
owners are the most successful. So a modified and indigenised technology
utilized by local land owners would help to focus attention at the micro
level to increased productivity on the whol

Morphometry and length weight relationship of the Catfishes Arius caelatus (Valenciennes, 1840) and Arius thalassinus (Ruppell, 1837) off Mumbai, Veraval and Vishakhapatanam coasts
The catfishes, Arius caelatus and Arius thalassinus have been compared morphometrically
for seven characters with reference to fork length from Mumbai, Veraval, Vishakhapatnam and
Veraval coasts respectively. For Arius caelatus, significant differences were found between the
sexes at the same locality, within the same sexes at different localities and between both sexes
combined from Mumbai and Veraval four out of seven characters were investigated. Similarly,
for Arius thalassinus, significant differences were noticed between and within the sexes at the
same locality and when the sexes were combined, almost all the characters showed highly
significant differences between the Veraval and Vishakhapatnam populations, which have been
attributed to separation of stocks. The sex specific length weight relationships between the sexes
as well as locations were not significant for A. caelatus, hence a relation common to both sexes
and regions was established. But A. thalassinus showed highly significant differences, in respect
of sexes as well as locations. Therefore, separate relationships were obtained for sexes and
locations for the latter
Information and communication technologies(ICT)s for women in agriculture
There has hen world-wide recognition of the importance of ICTs as tools to promote women's
empowerment. rights and dignity and full participation In the Information society by
providing immense possibilities for enhancing women's participation in socio-economic and
political development for poverty reduction, improve quality of life and achieve gender
equality. mere had been many successful applications of ICTs which Included the internet
and/or the gamut of technologies such as community radios. tele-centres information
kiosks. internet radio. mobile phones. Local Area Network and WAP applications for rural

Occurrence of pinjalo snapper, Pinjalo pinjalo in the fishery of Maharashtra
On 06.12.03, ten numbers of pinjalo snapper. Pinjalo pinjalo were landed in the trawl catches at the New Ferry Wharf,Mumbai. Later two more numbers were
recorded from Sassoon Dock, Mumbai on
11.12.03. The depth of fishing was 40-60 m
in the fishing grounds off southwest of
Mumabi
Seasonal abundance of juvenile threadfin breams from Mumbai waters
A very high catch of juvenile threadfin breams was observed at New Ferry Wharf, Mumbai in March 2007 by shrimp trawlers. The fishing was at about 60-80m depth to the southwest direction of Mumbai (off Ratnagiri) and the fishing duration was for a period of seven days. The total estimated monthly catch of threadfin breams in March '07 was 186.3t. The seasonal abundance of threadfin breams over a period of 3 years from 2004-2006 showed that the maximum catch was during March-April with a smaller peak during September-October

Increasing trend of Epinephelus diacanthus landing by trawlers at Mumbai.
Epinephelus diacanthus, locally known as
"hekru" has assumed commercial importance
in view of their good quality meat and greater
consumer demand in local and export markets
both in live as well as frozen forms. Groupers
constitute an important component of demersal
fishery resource of India and form 2% of total

Gonadal Assessment of Picnic Sea Bream Acanthopagrus berda (Forssk├еl 1775), a Potential Aquaculture Candidate for Indian Waters
Gonadal assessment of Acanthopagrus berda (Forssk├еl 1775), a commercially and
recreationally important fish from Indian waters, was studied by collecting 250 fishes from the
Korapuzha estuary, Calicut, Kerala using cast net during December 2015 to January 2016.
External morphology of the gonads reveals that A. berda is bisexual (with ovo-testis) in nature
with the ovarian lobe in the mid-dorsal region of the abdominal cavity and the testicular lobe as
a band along the ventro-lateral wall with a major portion running along the extreme posterior
region of the gonad. Males were dominant in lower length classes (17тАУ23 cm) while females
dominated in upper length classes (24тАУ43 cm), confirming protandrous hermaphroditism in the
species. Gonado-somatic index (GSI) was significantly higher (P<0.05) for the females. Males
and transitional groups were showing almost similar GSI. External morphological and
histological evaluation of the gonads of A. berda during the 2-month study revealed the presence
of different developmental stages such as matured testis with oozing milt, an intermediate gonad
structure with an anterior thin ovary-like structure and a posterior thick testis-like morphology
indicating a transitional ovo-testis, maturing ovary and matured ovary. The simultaneous
availability of milt oozing males and matured females from the wild indicates the opportunity for
development of captive breeding, seed production and hatchery technology for this important
commercial food fish
