Non-invasive imaging of subsurface paint layers with optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems are fast scanning infrared Michelson interferometers designed for the non-invasive examination of the interiors of the eye and subsurface structures of biological tissues. OCT has recently been applied to the non-invasive examinations of the stratigraphy of paintings and museum artefacts. So far this is the only technique capable of imaging non-invasively the subsurface structure of paintings and painted objects. Unlike the traditional method of paint cross-section examination where sampling is required, the non-invasive and non-contact nature of the technique enables the examination of the paint cross-section anywhere on a painting, as there is no longer an issue with conservation ethics regarding the taking of samples from historical artefacts. A range of applications of the technique including the imaging of stratigraphy of paintings and painted artefacts, the imaging of underdrawings to the analysis of the optical properties of paint and varnish layers is presented. Future projects on the application of OCT to art conservation are discussed
Bayes-X: a Bayesian inference tool for the analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters
We present the first public release of our Bayesian inference tool, Bayes-X,
for the analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters. We illustrate the
use of Bayes-X by analysing a set of four simulated clusters at z=0.2-0.9 as
they would be observed by a Chandra-like X-ray observatory. In both the
simulations and the analysis pipeline we assume that the dark matter density
follows a spherically-symmetric Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile and that
the gas pressure is described by a generalised NFW (GNFW) profile. We then
perform four sets of analyses. By numerically exploring the joint probability
distribution of the cluster parameters given simulated Chandra-like data, we
show that the model and analysis technique can robustly return the simulated
cluster input quantities, constrain the cluster physical parameters and reveal
the degeneracies among the model parameters and cluster physical parameters. We
then analyse Chandra data on the nearby cluster, A262, and derive the cluster
physical profiles. To illustrate the performance of the Bayesian model
selection, we also carried out analyses assuming an Einasto profile for the
matter density and calculated the Bayes factor. The results of the model
selection analyses for the simulated data favour the NFW model as expected.
However, we find that the Einasto profile is preferred in the analysis of A262.

When it Pays to Rush: Interpreting Morphogen Gradients Prior to Steady-State
During development, morphogen gradients precisely determine the position of
gene expression boundaries despite the inevitable presence of fluctuations.
Recent experiments suggest that some morphogen gradients may be interpreted
prior to reaching steady-state. Theoretical work has predicted that such
systems will be more robust to embryo-to-embryo fluctuations. By analysing two
experimentally motivated models of morphogen gradient formation, we investigate
the positional precision of gene expression boundaries determined by
pre-steady-state morphogen gradients in the presence of embryo-to-embryo
fluctuations, internal biochemical noise and variations in the timing of
morphogen measurement. Morphogens that are direct transcription factors are
found to be particularly sensitive to internal noise when interpreted prior to
steady-state, disadvantaging early measurement, even in the presence of large
embryo-to-embryo fluctuations. Morphogens interpreted by cell-surface receptors
can be measured prior to steady-state without significant decrease in
positional precision provided fluctuations in the timing of measurement are
small. Applying our results to experiment, we predict that Bicoid, a
transcription factor morphogen in Drosophila, is unlikely to be interpreted
prior to reaching steady-state. We also predict that Activin in Xenopus and
Nodal in zebrafish, morphogens interpreted by cell-surface receptors, can be
decoded in pre-steady-state.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure
Annotating Synapses in Large EM Datasets
Reconstructing neuronal circuits at the level of synapses is a central
problem in neuroscience and becoming a focus of the emerging field of
connectomics. To date, electron microscopy (EM) is the most proven technique
for identifying and quantifying synaptic connections. As advances in EM make
acquiring larger datasets possible, subsequent manual synapse identification
({\em i.e.}, proofreading) for deciphering a connectome becomes a major time
bottleneck. Here we introduce a large-scale, high-throughput, and
semi-automated methodology to efficiently identify synapses. We successfully
applied our methodology to the Drosophila medulla optic lobe, annotating many
more synapses than previous connectome efforts. Our approaches are extensible
and will make the often complicated process of synapse identification
accessible to a wider-community of potential proofreaders
Electronic structure of the molecule based magnet Cu PM(NO3)2 (H2O)2
We present density functional calculations on the molecule based S=1/2
antiferromagnetic chain compound Cu PM(NO3)2 (H2O)2; PM = pyrimidine. The
properties of the ferro- and antiferromagnetic state are investigated at the
level of the local density approximation and with the hybrid functional B3LYP.
Spin density maps illustrate the exchange path via the pyrimidine molecule
which mediates the magnetism in the one-dimensional chain. The computed
exchange coupling is antiferromagnetic and in reasonable agreement with the
experiment. It is suggested that the antiferromagnetic coupling is due to the
possibility of stronger delocalization of the charges on the nitrogen atoms,
compared to the ferromagnetic case. In addition, computed isotropic and
anisotropic hyperfine interaction parameters are compared with recent NMR
experiments
Learning To Be Affected: Social suffering and total pain at life’s borders.
The practice of Live Sociology in situations of pain and suffering is the author’s focus. An outline of the challenges of understanding pain is followed by a discussion of Bourdieu’s ‘social suffering’ (1999) and the palliative care philosophy of ‘total pain’. Using examples from qualitative research on disadvantaged dying migrants in the UK, attention is given to the methods that are improvised by dying people and care practitioners in attempts to bridge intersubjective divides, where the causes and routes of pain can be ontologically and temporally indeterminate and/or withdrawn. The paper contends that these latter phenomena are the incitement for the inventive bridging and performative work of care and Live Sociological methods, both of which are concerned with opposing suffering. Drawing from the ontology of total pain, I highlight the importance of (i) an engagement with a range of materials out of which attempts at intersubjective bridging can be produced, and which exceed the social, the material, and the temporally linear; and (ii) an empirical sensibility that is hospitable to the inaccessible and non-relational
Recovering the Primordial Density Fluctuations: A comparison of methods
We present a comparative study of six different methods for reversing the
gravitational evolution of a cosmological density field to recover the
primordial fluctuations: linear theory, the Gaussianization mapping scheme, two
different quasi-linear dynamical schemes based on the Zel'dovich approximation,
a Hybrid dynamical-Gaussianization method and the Path Interchange Zel'dovich
Approximation (PIZA). The final evolved density field from an N-body simulation
constitutes our test case. We use a variety of statistical measures to compare
the initial density field recovered from it to the true initial density field,
using each of the six different schemes. These include point-by-point
comparisons of the density fields in real space, the individual modes in
Fourier space, as well as global statistical properties such as the genus, the
PDF of the density, and the distribution of peak heights and their shapes. We
find linear theory to be the most inaccurate of all the schemes. The
Gaussianization scheme is the least accurate after linear theory. The two
quasi-linear dynamical schemes are more accurate than Gaussianization, although
they break down quite drastically when used outside their range of validity -
the quasi-linear regime. The complementary beneficial aspects of the dynamical
and the Gaussianization schemes are combined in the Hybrid method. We find this
Hybrid scheme to be more accurate and robust than either Gaussianization or the
dynamical method alone. The PIZA scheme performs substantially better than the
others in all point-by-point comparisons. However, it produces an oversmoothed
initial density field, with a smaller number of peaks than expected, but
recovers the PDF of the initial density with impressive accuracy on scales as

Optical coherence tomography - a tool for high resolution non-invasive 3D-imaging of the subsurface structure of paintings
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique originally developed for high-resolution 3D imaging of the human eye. In 2004, Targowski et al. and Liang et al. first reported its application to paintings, demonstrating that it was possible to produce cross-section images noninvasively with this technique. In 2005 Liang et al. explored further applications such as imaging of underdrawing at a resolution and contrast greater than that achievable with infrared reflectography Since then the authors have been conducting a project to investigate systematically the potential of O C T as a new tool in the non-invasive examination of paintings and to design an O C T optimised for use in museums. This paper discusses recent developments in this work and presents examples of the use of O CT on paintings undergoing conservation treatment in the National Gallery, London
Examining the potential public health benefit of offering STI testing to men in amateur football clubs: evidence from cross-sectional surveys
Background: In Britain, young people continue to bear the burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) so efforts are required, especially among men, to encourage STI testing. The SPORTSMART study trialled an intervention that sought to achieve this by offering chlamydia and gonorrhoea test-kits to men attending amateur football clubs between October and December 2012. With football the highest participation team sport among men in England, this paper examines the potential public health benefit of offering STI testing to men in this setting by assessing their sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviours, and healthcare behaviour and comparing them to men in the general population. Methods: Data were collected from 192 (male) members of 6 football clubs in London, United Kingdom, aged 18–44 years via a 20-item pen-and-paper self-completion questionnaire administered 2 weeks after the intervention. These were compared to data collected from 409 men of a similar age who were resident in London when interviewed during 2010–2012 for the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3), a national probability survey that used computer-assisted-personal-interviewing with computer-assisted-self-interview. Age standardisation and multivariable regression were used to account for sociodemographic differences between the surveys. Results: Relative to men in the general population, SPORTSMART men were younger (32.8 % vs. 21.7 % aged under 25 y), and more likely to report (all past year) at least 2 sexual partners (adjusted odds ratio, AOR: 3.25, 95 % CI: 2.15–4.92), concurrent partners (AOR: 2.05, 95 % CI: 1.39–3.02), and non-use of condoms (AOR: 2.17, 95 % CI: 1.39–3.41). No difference was observed in STI/HIV risk perception (AOR for reporting “not at all at risk” of STIs: 1.25, 95 % CI: 0.76–2.04; of HIV: AOR: 1.54, 95 % CI: 0.93–2.55), nor in reporting STI testing in the past year (AOR: 0.83, 95 % CI: 0.44–1.54), which was reported by only one in six men. Conclusions: Relative to young men in the general population, football club members who completed the SPORTSMART survey reported greater sexual risk behaviour but similar STI/HIV risk perception and STI testing history. Offering STI testing in amateur football clubs may therefore widen access to STI testing and health promotion messages for men at higher STI risk, which, given the minority currently testing and the popularity of football in England, should yield both individual and public health benefit
