Kosovo After the UNMACC and Beyond

    Get PDF
Over the past few years, the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Centre (UNMACC) has transferred mine action responsibilities to national organizations within Kosovo. The following article discusses how a number of different agencies within Kosovo are working together in various capacities to address mine action issues

The Darker Angels Of Our Nature: The South In American Horror Film

    Get PDF
How does one make a region horrific? For well over half of a century, the American South has functioned as a site for national anxieties over race and modernization. This study uses an inter-disciplinary approach in order to understand the various forces involved in the construction of the South in American horror cinema. Particular attention is paid to the influence that images of the civil rights movement have had on the development and evolution of the South as a horrific and terrifying space for the rest of the nation. It focuses on four main subcategories of the genre: the white degenerate redneck, the Voodoo film, the natural horror film, and the post-modern horror parody. Using the theories of Giorgio Agamben and Julia Kristeva as a foundation, the study also tries to evaluate the processes by which the South is constructed as the nation\u27s monstrous Other. While it is by no means a comprehensive study, this thesis covers some major (and some minor) depictions of the region in the horror genre

    The Actuator: Demining Innovations

    Get PDF
This approach to humanitarian demining differs from generally accepted methodology. It has not yet been tried, and the purpose of this article is to ensure that the general concept is placed in the public domain, where it may be debated and modified without considerations of intellectual property. Interval Research Corporation, where this idea originated, is not in the business of mine clearance, or of manufacturing mine clearance systems, so the idea is being passed along to the community best capable of analyzing it

The Effects of ECT upon simple visual reaction time and serial anticipation learning

    Get PDF
A 2 x 3 analysis of variance design with repeated measures on the second factor (n = 10 in each group) was employed to assess the effects of ECT upon psychomotor speed and serial learning ability. The results revealed that ECT did not increase either simple reaction time or serial learning scores. These findings are interpreted to indicate: (a) that ECT does not reduce the psychomotor retardation found in psychiatric patients, and (b) that ECT alone does not facilitate learnin

Mood instability : significance, definition and measurement

    Get PDF
Mood instability is common, and an important feature of several psychiatric disorders. We discuss the definition and measurement of mood instability, and review its prevalence, characteristics, neurobiological correlates and clinical implications. We suggest that mood instability has underappreciated transdiagnostic potential as an investigational and therapeutic target

Ultrahigh and persistent optical depths of caesium in Kagom\'e-type hollow-core photonic crystal fibres

Alkali-filled hollow-core fibres are a promising medium for investigating light-matter interactions, especially at the single-photon level, due to the tight confinement of light and high optical depths achievable by light-induced atomic desorption. However, until now these large optical depths could only be generated for seconds at most once per day, severely limiting the practicality of the technology. Here we report the generation of highest observed transient (>105>10^5 for up to a minute) and highest observed persistent (>2000>2000 for hours) optical depths of alkali vapours in a light-guiding geometry to date, using a caesium-filled Kagom\'e-type hollow-core photonic crystal fibre. Our results pave the way to light-matter interaction experiments in confined geometries requiring long operation times and large atomic number densities, such as generation of single-photon-level nonlinearities and development of single photon quantum memories.Comment: Author Accepted versio
