In Search of Play

This thesis addresses the existence, inclusion, and access to play spaces in the built environment. It proposes that play is fundamental to the wellbeing of people of all ages, not only children, and analyzes how play spaces are or are not inclusive to people of all ages, then further addresses this in regard to gender, race, and socioeconomic class. This project presents the perspectives of social theorists such as Johan Huizinga, Guy Debord/ SI International, and Henri Lefebvre to analyze the role of space and social production of play. A Study of the Career Maturity of Low Socio-Economic Teenagers

This experiment was a comparison of the pre and posttest scores of low socio-economic teenagers on Cirites\u27 Career Maturity Inventory and the Gordon occupational Checklist. The experimental group was exposed to learning modules with emphasis on personal relations, problem-solving techniques, and decision-making methods. A MANOVA test revealed no significant differences between the pre and posttests on either the Career Maturity Inventory or the Gordon Occupational Checklist. There is an indication that these Subjects may need development in other areas as their career maturity is within the normal range. The results of the Gordon Occupational Checklist show a very narrow view of the world of work for young people who are in high school

Journal ArticleThe terminally ill person who plans suicide poses a clinical dilemma in suicidology. Issues of rational suicide are complicated. Although experts (Battin, 1991; Hoff, 1989; Motto, 1972; Pretzel, 1984; Saunders & Valente, 1988) recognize rational suicide, the prevailing paradigm of suicide prevention rests on an assumption that suicide is an irrational response to a temporary crisis. This bias may interfere with serious responses to terminally ill patients who plan suicide. The purpose of this case is to invite dialogue and thoughtful debate about responses to people who contemplate suicide because of terminal illness

Indicators of Woman Abuse Based on a Chart Review at a Family Practice Center

Objective: To identify demographic and health indicators of domestic violence. Design: Anonymous questionnaire survey of patients regarding violence and a chart review regarding symptoms and diagnoses. Setting: Community-based family practice residency training center in a midwestern city. Participants: Women 18 years of age or older visiting the center over a 2-month period in 1990. Of 476 eligible participants, 394 (82.7%) consented to complete the survey. Measures: A detailed, standardized measure of violence was used. Physical and psychological problems were given codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9). Results: Younger women and those separated or divorced from their partners were more likely to have been victims. Never-married women also had substantially high rates of victimization. Depression was the strongest indicator of victimization, even when controlling for demographic factors. Back pain, ulcers, headaches, and anxiety were not strong indicators of abuse. A classification analysis showed that a combination of all variables could predict lifetime injury only about half the time and violence in the past year only about 20% of the time. Conclusions: Since neither demographic nor health factors could accurately predict who had been victimized, all women need to be asked about abuse. The pseudodichotomous Dasya sylviae sp. nov. (Delesseriaceae, Ceramiales) from 60–90 m mesophotic reefs off Bermuda

The red alga Dasya sylviae C.W.Schneid., M.M.Cassidy & G.W.Saunders sp. nov . is described from mesophotic depths of 60–90 m off Bermuda. Genetic sequences (COI-5P, rbc L) and morphological characteristics show that this species is distinct from other known pseudodichotomous species of Dasya . Of ten current species in the genus reported from Bermuda, only three, D. collinsiana M.Howe, D. cryptica C.W.Schneid., Quach & C.E.Lane and D. punicea (Zanardini) Menegh., share the overall pattern of pseudodichotomous branching in their axes; however, key morphological features easily distinguish them from D. sylviae sp. nov. The species most similar in habit to D. sylviae sp. nov. is D. crouaniana J.Agardh (type locality West Indies), but it bears shorter pseudolateral branches, and broader and longer tetrasporangial stichidia than the new species. Unique among the species of Dasya , D. sylviae sp. nov. lacks post-sporangial cover cells in tetrasporangial stichidia

A transdisciplinary andragogy for leadership development in a postmodern context

The paper explores the complex nature of the postmodern world in which leaders find themselves and questions the appropriateness of the current discipline-based structure of MBA education in terms of its usefulness to develop effective postmodern leaders. What is called for is an approach to problem solving that is heuristic and also a tolerance for the temporal nature of solutions, flexibility, and multiple perspectives and inputs. Transdisciplinarity, which focuses on bringing together these different perspectives, provides a useful platform where developing leaders can engage with the dynamic and complex environment of a postmodern era. The nature of transdisciplinarity, from the perspective of a number of theorists, is presented. Furthermore, synergies between the transdisciplinary approach and the nature of postmodern leadership are identified and analysed. The paper examines synergies between transdisciplinarity and other scientific paradigms such as social constructivism, critical management theory, postmodernism, social cognitive theory, critical pedagogy, systems theory, complexity theory, cybernetics, narrative psychology, critical reflexivity, and others. The methodology is qualitative and involves the observation of a number of lecturing sessions at Business Schools in the United Kingdom, United States and South Africa, with the objective of noting whether any elements of transdisciplinary learning are evident. These observations are followed up with individual interviews with selected lecturers. The paper concludes with an analytical discourse on the value that a transdisciplinary andragogy can add to leadership development, particularly in relation to assisting students with embracing the complex challenges of leading in a postmodern era. The paper concludes that there is a significant lack of alignment with the prevailing approach to learning methodology in MBA programs and the nature of the postmodern world. The research recommends that a transdisciplinary learning methodology has a great deal to offer in terms of providing a learning environment for an emerging leader, that will equip him or her to be effective in a postmodern environment.
