Prosody and semantics of the focus particles always and only in Korean: Theoretical implications from a perception experiment

This study sheds light on the relationship between the prosodic features and semantic functions of the Korean focus particles (FPs) hangsang ‘always’ and ocik ‘only’. Based on a production experiment, Nambu and Lee (forthcoming) argue that different phonetic realizations of hangsang and ocik reflect their semantic distinction, supporting Beaver and Clark’s (2008) Quasi/Free/Conventional Theory. We conducted a perception experiment to examine the extent to which listeners are conscious of prosodic cues related to hangsang and ocik with different environments. Following the production experiment, the results of the experiments show that ocik has rigid prosodic behavior as conventional association, in contrast to hangsang, whose prosodic behavior, which reflects free association, depends on contextual conditions, supporting Beaver and Clark’s (2003, 2008) clai

A Quantitative Analysis of Nominative/Genitive Alternation in Japanese

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:Based on his grammaticality judgment test, Harada (1971) claimed that there is an ongoing change, whereby the speakers of Tokyo Japanese increasingly prefer ga to no in relevant environments. In this paper, I present a quantitative analysis using the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese. The goal of this study is not only to validate the findings in Nambu (2007) and Nambu and Matsuda (2007), but also to give another perspective on the variation

Experimental investigation of pulsed entangled photons and photonic quantum channels

The development of key devices and systems in quantum information technology, such as entangled particle sources, quantum gates and quantum cryptographic systems, requires a reliable and well-established method for characterizing how well the devices or systems work. We report our recent work on experimental characterization of pulsed entangled photonic states and photonic quantum channels, using the methods of state and process tomography. By using state tomography, we could reliably evaluate the states generated from a two-photon source under development and develop a highly entangled pulsed photon source. We are also devoted to characterization of single-qubit and two-qubit photonic quantum channels. Characterization of typical single-qubit decoherence channels has been demonstrated using process tomography. Characterization of two-qubit channels, such as classically correlated channels and quantum mechanically correlated channels is under investigation. These characterization techniques for quantum states and quantum processes will be useful for developing photonic quantum devices and for improving their performances.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, in Quantum Optics in Computing and Communications, Songhao Liu, Guangcan Guo, Hoi-Kwong Lo, Nobuyuki Imoto, Eds., Proceedings of SPIE Vol. 4917, pp.13-24 (2002

Fatal child abuse in Japan: does a trend exist toward tougher sentencing?

BACKGROUND: It has been pointed out in Japan that criminal punishment in domestic homicide cases, especially in fatal child abuse cases, tends to be more lenient than in public homicide cases that occur outside the home. In recent news accounts of fatal child abuse cases, however, the media has reported that court-imposed sentences have tended to be stricter every year.METHODS: Using the online databases of three major Japanese newspapers, we collected articles about fatal child abuse cases that had been published from January 2008 to December 2009. We analyzed these articles to determine, whether a tendency towards tougher penalties, as was put forward by the media, actually exists at present time in the criminal system in Japan. RESULTS: We found 24 cases, out of which 20 involved only one offender and 4 involved two offenders. These 28 offenders comprised nine biological fathers, 11 biological mothers, and eight other male relatives of the child victims. We found that the sentences handed down by the court clearly tended to be more lenient for female offenders. A new system of criminal jurisprudence, the so-called saiban-in system wherein citizens serve as “lay judges” in criminal trials involving serious crimes, was implemented in Japan at the start of 2009. Each, district court has gradually adopted this new system after a preparation period of approximately five years starting in 2004. CONCLUSIONS: Many figures in the Japanese media predicted that the gap between social expectations and court sentences for sanction against domestic homicide cases would be filled with the present transitional period of the Japanese criminal system. However, the present study found no significant difference in the laws regarding sentencing in fatal child abuse cases before and after the preparation period of the saiban-in system

Surgical site infection in spinal metastasis: risk factors and countermeasures.

金沢大学附属病院整形外科STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review (phase 1) and prospective clinical study (phase 2). OBJECTIVES: To identify independent risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) and to evaluate the positive effect of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) to decrease the risk of SSI in patients with spinal metastasis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgery for spinal metastasis is associated with an increased risk of SSI. Although previous reports have evaluated risk factors of SSI for spinal metastasis, most of the studies lack multivariate analysis. A recent study demonstrated the utility of PGE1 in decreasing wound complications in patients with prior irradiation. The role of PGE1 in surgery for spinal metastasis has not been previously evaluated. METHODS: One hundred ten patients with spinal metastasis were retrospectively reviewed (phase 1). Risk factors for SSI were analyzed using logistic regression. Phase 2 was a prospective clinical trial investigating the utility of PGE1 at reducing the rate of SSI. Ninety-four patients with spinal metastasis were treated at our institute. The infection rate and risk factors identified in phase 1 and 2 were compared. RESULTS: The rate of SSI during phase 1 was 7.1%. Independent risk factors identified by multivariate logistic regression were diabetes, and preoperative irradiation. The rate of SSI for patients who had irradiation before surgery was 32%, whereas the rate for patients without irradiation was 1.1%. This difference was statistically significant. The rate of SSI in phase 2 was 3.1%. In phase 2 patients who received preoperative irradiation, the rate of SSI was 4.5%. The difference between phase 1 and phase 2 was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This study identified diabetes and preoperative irradiation to be independent risk factors for SSI in patients with spinal metastasis. PGE1 administration was found to significantly decrease the incidence of SSI in patients with spinal metastasis who underwent preoperative irradiation.全文公開2010031

Dichotomy Between Orbital and Magnetic Nematic Instabilities in BaFe2S3

Nematic orders emerge nearly universally in iron-based superconductors, but elucidating their origins is challenging because of intimate couplings between orbital and magnetic fluctuations. The iron-based ladder material BaFe2S3, which superconducts under pressure, exhibits antiferromagnetic order below TN ~ 117K and a weak resistivity anomaly at T* ~ 180K, whose nature remains elusive. Here we report angle-resolved magnetoresistance (MR) and elastoresistance (ER) measurements in BaFe2S3, which reveal distinct changes at T*. We find that MR anisotropy and ER nematic response are both suppressed near T*, implying that an orbital order promoting isotropic electronic states is stabilized at T*. Such an isotropic state below T* competes with the antiferromagnetic order, which is evidenced by the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of nematic fluctuations. In contrast to the cooperative nematic orders in spin and orbital channels in iron pnictides, the present competing orders can provide a new platform to identify the separate roles of orbital and magnetic fluctuations.Comment: 7 pages 5 figures, to be published in Phys.
