    FINGER FORCES DURING BASEBALL PITCHING

    Get PDF
A 3D force transducer was installed in an official baseball to make a direct measurement of finger force imparting on the ball during pitching. Eight collegiate pitchers threw a 4- seam fastball at their maximal speed. Force was measured separately from each of the index, middle, and ring fingers, and the thumb. Peaks and peak occurrence time of computed resultant and shear forces were evaluated. Index and middle finger forces generally had a bimodal pattern with the first and second peaks appeared at about 80, and 96% of the stride foot contact period, respectively. Their force magnitude reached 90 N. and above. Magnitude of shear force was about half of the resultant force. Forces by the thumb and ring finger were less than those by the index and middle fingers. The findings indicated that the fingers were applying considerably large magnitude of force during pitching

    ヒト膵癌におけるNectin-4発現の腫瘍増殖、血管新生に対する効果と臨床的意義

BACKGROUND: Nectin-4 belongs to the nectin family that has diverse physiological and pathological functions in humans. Recent studies have also suggested some roles for Nectin-4 in several human cancers. However, the precise roles and clinical relevance of Nectin-4 in tumors are largely unknown. METHODS: Nectin-4 expression was investigated in 123 patients with pancreatic cancer by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, we investigated the association of Nectin-4 in pancreatic cancer with tumor proliferation, angiogenesis and immunity by using immunohistochemistry and siRNA interference method. RESULTS: Patients with high Nectin-4 expression had poorer postoperative prognosis than those with low expression. Importantly, multivariate analysis indicated that Nectin-4 expression had a significant independent prognostic value in pancreatic cancer (HR = 1.721, 1.085-2.730; P = 0.021). Tumor Nectin-4 expression was significantly correlated with Ki67 expression. In addition, siRNA-mediated gene silencing of Nectin-4 significantly inhibited the cell proliferation in human pancreatic cancer cells, Capan-2 and BxPC-3. Furthermore, Nectin-4 expression was also positively correlated with VEGF expression and intratumoral microvessel density. However, there were no significant correlations of tumor Nectin-4 expression with tumor-infiltrating T cells. CONCLUSION: Nectin-4 is a significant prognostic predictor, and may play a critical role in pancreatic cancer. Nectin-4 may be novel therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer.博士(医学)・乙第1400号・平成29年6月28日Copyright © Nishiwada et al.; licensee BioMed Central. 2015 : This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly credited. Left Side Electrode of DBS Caused an Acute Mood Swing

    Get PDF
No previous reports have described a case in which deep brain stimulation elicited an acute mood swing from a depressive to manic state simply by switching one side of the bilateral deep brain stimulation electrode on and off. The patient was a 68-year-old woman with a 10-year history of Parkinson’s disease. She underwent bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation surgery. After undergoing surgery, the patient exhibited hyperthymia. She was scheduled for admission. On the first day of admission, it was clear that resting tremors in the right limbs had relapsed and her hyperthymia had reverted to depression. It was discovered that the left-side electrode of the deep brain stimulation device was found to be accidentally turned off. As soon as the electrode was turned on, motor impairment improved and her mood switched from depression to mania. The authors speculate that the lateral balance of stimulation plays an important role in mood regulation. The current report provides an intriguing insight into possible mechanisms of mood swing in mood disorders

OBJECTIVE: Smoking may affect pharmacokinetics of chemotherapeutic agents and hemodynamics of the smokers, thereby influencing adverse events and efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC). The aim of this study was to clarify how smoking totally affected patients with PC receiving current chemotherapy. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of smoking status on the performance of chemotherapy and survival in 262 patients with PC including 158 resectable and 104 unresectable PC. RESULTS: There were more male and younger patients in current smokers than in nonsmokers. In unresectable PC, current smokers had more metastatic tumors than locally advanced tumors compared with nonsmokers. In current smokers receiving chemotherapy, the baseline white blood cell count, neutrophil count, and hemoglobin concentration were significantly higher in current smokers than in nonsmokers. Furthermore, grades 3 to 4 neutropenia was observed more often in nonsmokers than smokers. On the other hand, the performance and efficacy of the planned adjuvant chemotherapy were similar between smokers and nonsmokers. More importantly, there was no significant difference in overall prognosis between smokers and nonsmokers receiving chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking status has no significant impact on the efficacy of current chemotherapy for both resectable and unresectable PC.博士(医学)・乙第1393号・平成29年3月15日Copyright © 2015 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. A closed-loop type algorithm for determination of variable blank holder force trajectory and its application to square cup deep drawing

金沢大学理工研究域機械工学系In deep drawing, a low blank holder force (BHF) can cause wrinkling, while a high BHF can lead to tearing. Thus, it is important to determine the appropriate BHF to be utilized in the forming process. In this study, a variable blank holder force (VBHF) approach to deep drawing is employed, and a simple closed-loop type algorithm is developed to obtain the VBHF trajectory. The proposed algorithm is divided into two phases. The objective of the first phase is to check wrinkling and tearing. In this phase, a low BHF, which is the cause of wrinkling, is used as the initial BHF; it is then increased to prevent wrinkling. The algorithm is terminated when tearing occurs. In a numerical simulation, the distance between the die and the blank holder is used to measure wrinkling. On the other hand, the thickness of the blank is used to determine the tearing. Next, in the second phase, the deviations in thickness are examined. Wrinkles are also checked in the second phase. By iterating the above two phases, the VBHF trajectory can be obtained. One of the advantages of the VBHF is that it reduces the forming energy. The validity of the proposed algorithm is examined through both a numerical simulation and experiment. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Limited
