    Postmortem Changes in Myoglobin Content in Organs

    Postmortem changes in myoglobin concentrations in blood and organs were investigated using an enzyme immunoassay by animal experiments in combination with immunohistochemical staining of human cases. Blood myoglobin concentrations were found to increase drastically within a very short time after death. Those in striated muscle, however, did not change by day 14 postmortem. Myoglobin content in the liver and kidney increased slightly by day 5 postmortem, and more obviously by day 7 or later. However, almost no change was observed by day 5 in the kidney when the renal artery and vein had been ligated just after death. In the thyroid gland and the lung, the myoglobin content markedly increased by day 7 postmortem, with the logarithmical values rising nearly linearly as the time after death passed. In the thyroid gland, concentrations reached the level of the striated muscle. The mechanisms of postmortem myoglobin increase in organs are thought to be direct diffusion from the striated muscle and/or distribution through the blood. To estimate the postmortem interval, the determination of myoglobin content in the thyroid gland or the lung appears to be useful

    Low temperature deformation mechanism of semiconductor single crystal and molding of Ge microlens array by direct electrical heating

    Although deforming a silicon single crystal at a temperature of about 600 °C lower than its melting point (1414 °C) by direct electrical heating was successfully demonstrated, the mechanism has still not been fully clarified. In this paper, we propose a model for the low temperature deformation of a semiconductor single crystal by direct electrical heating. The thermographic observation during direct electrical heating reveals that the local temperature is higher at the region where dense dislocation occurred in the semiconductor single crystal by uniaxial pressing. This is interpreted in terms of the scattering of an electron by the dislocation leading to an increase in the electrical resistivity. Finally, the deformation temperature of the semiconductor single crystal apparently becomes low due to the occurrence of such hot spots. We have also demonstrated an application to mold a microlens array composed of a germanium single crystal with a focal length of 25 µm

    Protective functions and ecosystem services of global forests in the past quarter-century

    AbstractThe world’s forests provide fundamental protection of soil and water resources as well as multiple ecosystem services and cultural or spiritual values. We summarized the FRA 2015 data for protective functions and ecosystem services, and analyzed increasing or decreasing trends of protective areas. The global forest area managed for protection of soil and water was 1.002billionha as of 2015, which was 25.1% of all global forested areas. Protective forests have increased by 0.181billionha over the past 25years mainly because more countries are now reporting protective forest areas (139 in 2015 vs 114 in 1990). However, average percentage of designated for protective forests did not change significantly from 1990 to 2015. Global forest area managed for ecosystem services is also now at 25.4% of global total forest area and has changed little over the past 25years. Among the twelve categories of protective forests, flood control, public recreation, and cultural services increased both in terms of percentage of total forest area and the number of reporting countries. Public awareness of the importance of forest resources for functions and services other than production continues to increase as evidenced by the increase of protective forest designations and reporting in many countries. Percentages of total forest area designated for both protective forests and ecosystem services show a dual-peak distribution of numbers of countries concentrated at 0% and 100%. This suggests a socio-economic influence for the designations. We examined five case study countries (Australia, Canada, China, Kenya, and Russia). The most dramatic changes in the past 25years have been in China where protective forests for soil and water resources increased from about 12% to 28% of forest area. The Russian Federation has also increased percentages of forest area devoted to soil and water resource protection and delivery of ecosystem services. Australia is now reporting in more protective forest categories whereas Kenya and Canada changed little. These five countries have their own classification of forest functions and recalculation methods of reporting for FRA 2015 were different. This demonstrates the difficulty in establishing a universal common designation scheme for multi-functions of forest. Production of more accurate assessments by further improvements in the reporting framework and data quality would help advance the value of FRA as the unique global database for forest functions integrated between forest ecosystems and social sciences

    Genome-wide Analysis of Chlamydophila pneumoniae Gene Expression at the Late Stage of Infection

    Chlamydophila pneumoniae, an obligate intracellular eubacterium, changes its form from a vegetative reticulate body into an infectious elementary body during the late stage of its infection cycle. Comprehension of the molecular events in the morphological change is important to understand the switching mechanism between acute and chronic infection, which is deemed to relate to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Herein, we have attempted to screen genes expressed in the late stage with a genome-wide DNA microarray, resulting in nomination of 17 genes as the late-stage genes. Fourteen of the 17 genes and six other genes predicted as late-stage genes were confirmed to be up-regulated in the late stage with a quantitative reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction. These 20 late-stage genes were classified into two groups by clustering analysis: ‘drastically induced’ and ‘moderately induced’ genes. Out of eight drastically induced genes, four contain σ28 promoter-like sequences and the other four contain an upstream common sequence. It suggests that besides σ28, there are certain up-regulatory mechanisms at the late stage, which may be involved in the chlamydial morphological change and thus pathogenesis
