    spl(2,1) dynamical supersymmetry and suppression of ferromagnetism in flat band double-exchange models

    The low energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a N-site complete graph extended with on-site repulsion is obtained from the underlying spl(2,1) algebra properties in the strong coupling limit. The ferromagnetic ground state is realized for 1 and N+1 electrons only. We identify the large density of states to be responsible for the suppression of the ferromagnetic state and argue that a similar situation is encountered in the Kagome, pyrochlore, and other lattices with flat bands in their one-particle density of states.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Temperature dependence of the resistivity in the double-exchange model

    The resistivity around the ferromagnetic transition temperature in the double exchange model is studied by the Schwinger boson approach. The spatial spin correlation responsible for scattering of conduction electrons are taken into account by adopting the memory function formalism. Although the correlation shows a peak lower than the transition temperature, the resistivity in the ferromagnetic state monotonically increases with increasing temperature due to a variation of the electronic state of the conduction electron. In the paramagnetic state, the resistivity is dominated by the short range correlation of scattering and is almost independent of the temperature. It is attributed to a cancellation between the nearest-neighbor spin correlation, the fermion bandwidth, and the fermion kinetic energy. This result implies the importance of the temperature dependence of the electronic states of the conduction electron as well as the localized spin states in both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 4 PostScript figures, To appear in Phys.     Acute Pancreatitis Secondary to a Perivaterian Duodenal Diverticular Abscess

    A 46-year-old previously fit lady was admitted with acute pancreatitis. She had no history of gallstones. She was not on any medications and consumed minimal amounts of alcohol. On subsequent investigations as to the causative factor, she was found at ultrasound to have an air-fluid filled cystic structure posterior to the head of pancreas which was compressing the common bile duct. Further magnetic resonance imaging and computer tomography scans showed that this cystic lesion was located around the ampulla of Vater. A diagnosis of a perivaterian abscess was made. At endoscopy, a large contained abscess was seen which was successfully drained. She made a full and uneventful recovery

    In-medium two-nucleon properties in high electric fields

    The quantum mechanical two - particle problem is considered in hot dense nuclear matter under the influence of a strong electric field such as the field of the residual nucleus in heavy - ion reactions. A generalized Galitskii-Bethe-Salpeter equation is derived and solved which includes retardation and field effects. Compared with the in-medium properties in the zero-field case, bound states are turned into resonances and the scattering phase shifts are modified. Four effects are observed due to the applied field: (i) A suppression of the Pauli-blocking below nuclear matter densities, (ii) the onset of pairing occurs already at higher temperatures due to the field, (iii) a field dependent finite lifetime of deuterons and (iv) the imaginary part of the quasiparticle self-energy changes its sign for special values of density and temperatures indicating a phase instability.     Canted Ferromagnetism in Double Exchange Model with on-site Coulomb Repulsion

    The double exchange model with on-site Coulomb repulsion is considered. Schwinger-bosons representation of the localized spins is used and two spin-singlet Fermion operators are introduced. In terms of the new Fermi fields the on-site Hund's interaction is in a diagonal form and the true magnons of the system are identified. The singlet fermions can be understood as electrons dressed by a cloud of repeatedly emitted and reabsorbed magnons. Rewritten in terms of Schwinger-bosons and spin-singlet fermions the theory is U(1) gauge invariant. We show that spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry leads to \emph{\textbf{canted ferromagnetism with on-site spins of localized and delocalized electrons misaligned}}. On-site canted phase emerges in double exchange model when Coulomb repulsion is large enough. The quantum phase transition between ferromagnetism and canted phase is studied varying the Coulomb repulsion for different values of parameters in the theory such as Hund's coupling and chemical potential.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Adenoviruses in Avian Hosts: Recent Discoveries Shed New Light on Adenovirus Diversity and Evolution

    While adenoviruses cause infections in a wide range of vertebrates, members of the genus Atadenovirus, Siadenovirus, and Aviadenovirus predominantly infect avian hosts. Several recent studies on avian adenoviruses have encouraged us to re-visit previously proposed adenovirus evolutionary concepts. Complete genomes and partial DNA polymerase sequences of avian adenoviruses were extracted from NCBI and analysed using various software. Genomic analyses and constructed phylogenetic trees identified the atadenovirus origin from an Australian native passerine bird in contrast to the previously established reptilian origin. In addition, we demonstrated that the theories on higher AT content in atadenoviruses are no longer accurate and cannot be considered as a species demarcation criterion for the genus Atadenovirus. Phylogenetic reconstruction further emphasised the need to reconsider siadenovirus origin, and we recommend extended studies on avian adenoviruses in wild birds to provide finer evolutionary resolution

    A comparison of the cognitive difficulties posed by SPARQL query constructs

    This study investigated difficulties in the comprehension of SPARQL. In particular, it compared the declarative and navigational styles present in the language, and various operators used in SPARQL property paths. The study involved participants selecting possible answers given a SPARQL query and knowledgebase. In general, no significant differences were found in terms of the response time and accuracy with which participants could answer questions expressed in either a declarative or navigational form. However, UNION did take significantly longer to comprehend than both braces and verti- cal line in property paths; with braces being faster than vertical line. Inversion and negated property paths both proved difficult, with their combination being very difficult indeed. Questions involving MINUS were answered more accu- rately than those involving negation in property paths, in particular where pred- icates were inverted. Both involve negation, but the semantics are different. With the MINUS questions, negation and inversion can be considered separate- ly; with property paths, negation and inversion need to be considered together. Participants generally expressed a preference for data represented graphically, and this preference was significantly correlated with accuracy of comprehen- sion. Implications for the design and use of query languages are discussed

    CCL4 induces inflammatory signalling and barrier disruption in the neurovascular endothelium

    Background: During neuroinflammation many chemokines alter the function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) that regulates the entry of macromolecules and immune cells into the brain. As the milieu of the brain is altered, biochemical and structural changes contribute to the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation and may impact on neurogenesis. The chemokine CCL4, previously known as MIP-1β, is upregulated in a wide variety of central nervous system disorders, including multiple sclerosis, where it is thought to play a key role in the neuroinflammatory process. However, the effect of CCL4 on BBB endothelial cells (ECs) is unknown. Materials and methods: Expression and distribution of CCR5, phosphorylated p38, F-actin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) were analysed in the human BBB EC line hCMEC/D3 by Western blot and/or immunofluorescence in the presence and absence of CCL4. Barrier modulation in response to CCL4 using hCMEC/D3 monolayers was assessed by measuring molecular flux of 70 ​kDa RITC-dextran and transendothelial lymphocyte migration. Permeability changes in response to CCL4 in vivo were measured by an occlusion technique in pial microvessels of Wistar rats and by fluorescein angiography in mouse retinae. Results: CCR5, the receptor for CCL4, was expressed in hCMEC/D3 cells. CCL4 stimulation led to phosphorylation of p38 and the formation of actin stress fibres, both indicative of intracellular chemokine signalling. The distribution of junctional proteins was also altered in response to CCL4: junctional ZO-1 was reduced by circa 60% within 60 ​min. In addition, surface VE-cadherin was redistributed through internalisation. Consistent with these changes, CCL4 induced hyperpermeability in vitro and in vivo and increased transmigration of lymphocytes across monolayers of hCMEC/D3 cells. Conclusion: These results show that CCL4 can modify BBB function and may contribute to disease pathogenesis

    Helicobacter pylori Colonization in Infants and Young Children is Not Necessarily Associated with Diarrhoea

    A cohort of 151 infants and young children aged 1-23 months from a poor peri-urban community of Bangladesh was studied to determine the relationship between Helicobacter pylori colonization and morbidity due to diarrhoea. A 13C urea breath test was performed to detect the presence of H. pylori.Children were followed up at home every alternate day for 6 months and diarrhoeal morbidity datawere collected. Diarrhoeal morbidity was compared between H. pylori-positive and H. pylori-negative children. Sixty-eight (45 per cent) children were H. pylori positive and 83 (55 per cent) were H. pylori negative. During the first 1-month period following the breath test, three (4.4 per cent) H. pylori-positive and four (4.8 per cent) H. pylori-negative children had diarrhoea. Thirty-two (47 per cent) of the children in the positive group and 43 (52 per cent) in the negative group had one or more episodesof diarrhoea during the 6-month follow-up period. Median number of diarrhoeal episodes was 1.0(range 1.0-4.0) in the H. pylori-positive children and 2.0 (range 1.0-5.0) in the H. pylori-negativechildren (p = 0.19). No significant difference was observed in the cumulative days with diarrhoea.The results of this study suggest that H. pylori colonization is not associated with diarrhoealmorbidity in infants and young childre
