    Influence of plant nutrient management on the yield performance of transplant Aman rice (Oryza sativa L.)

    The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during June to December 2016 to investigate the influence of plant nutrient management on the yield performance of transplant Aman rice varieties. The experiment comprised four varieties viz., BRRIdhan70, BRRI dhan71, BRRI dhan72 and BRRIdhan73 and six nutrient managements viz. poultry manure 5 t ha-1, recommended dose of prilled urea, P, K, S, Zn (160, 65, 90, 70, 10 kg ha-1  of urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, respectively), 75% of recommended dose of prilled urea and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 2.5 t ha-1, 50% of recommended dose of prilled urea and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 5 t ha-1, USG 1.8 g/4 hills and P, K, S, Zn recommended dose, USG 1.8 g/4 hills and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Number of total tillers hill-1 (10.25), number of effective tillers hill-1(8.85), grains panicle-1 (94.23), 1000-grain weight (27.81), grain yield (5.88 t ha-1) and straw yield (8.83 t ha-1) were found to be the highest in BRRI dhan72. Among the nutrient management, USG 1.8 g/4 hills and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 2.5 t ha-1 exhibited its superiority  to other treatments in terms of plant height (131.0 cm), number of total tillers hill-1 (10.67), number of effective tillers hill-1 (9.13), grains panicle-1 (92.71), 1000-grain weight (26.82), grain yield (6.0 t ha-1) and straw yield (8.35 t ha-1). The highest grain yield (6.45 t ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan72 combined with USG 1.8 g/4 hills and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 2.5 t ha-1 and the lowest grain yield (4.85 t ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan71 fertilized with poultry manure 5 t ha-1. From the study, it can be concluded that transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan72 fertilized with USG 1.8 g/4 hills and P, K, S, Zn + poultry manure 2.5 t ha-1 appears as the promising practice to obtain the highest grain yield

    Effect of age of seedlings at staggered planting and nutrient management on the growth performance of aromatic fine rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan38)

    The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during June to December 2014 with a view to finding out the effect of age of seedlings at staggered planting and nutrient management on growth of aromatic fine rice (cv. BRRI dhan38). The experiment comprised three ages of seedlings viz., 30, 45 and 60-day old and six treatment of nutrient managements viz. control (no manures and fertilizers),  recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers, 50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1,  50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 and 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The effect of age of seedlings and nutrient management and their interaction were significant on crop growth characters of aromatic fine rice. The result revealed that the highest plant height, total tiller hill-1, total dry matter production hill-1 and CGR were found when 30-day old seedlings were transplanted. Among the nutrient managements the highest growth parameters was obtain in 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 due to the continuous supply of nutrients by the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer which led to better growth in plants. In 30-day old seedlings with 75% inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 treatment performed best in case of all growth parameters, while the lowest one was observed in 60-day old seedlings with control. Therefore, 30-day old seedlings with 75% inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 treatment might be a promising practice in aromatic fine rice cultivation in terms of growth performance

    Effect of water and weed management in Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28) in Bangladesh

    The experiment was conducted at the Farm of Farm Management Division, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December 2012 to June 2013 to find out the effect of water and weed management in Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28). The experiment consisted of three irrigation systems viz., conventional flood irrigation, Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and System of rice intensification (SRI) and four weed management practices viz., No weeding, hand weeding thrice at 20, 35 and 50 days after sowing, blade weeding + hand weeding once at 20 DAS; and pre-emergence herbicide (Panida 33 EC) @ 2.5 l ha-1 + hand weeding once at 20 DAS. Crop characters, yield components and yield were significantly influenced by water and weed managements, and their interaction. The highest plant height (91.51 cm), total tillers hill-1 (15.49), grains panicle-1 (86.87) and grain yield (4.02 t ha-1) were obtained in SRI method and corresponding lowest values were found in conventional flood irrigation while all parameters showed intermediate values in AWD. The highest plant height (93.45 cm), total tillers hill-1 (16.53), effective tillers hill-1 (12.88), grains panicle-1 (86.14), grain yield (5.47 t ha-1) and straw yield were found in pre-emergence herbicide (Panida 33 EC) @ 2.5 l ha-1 + one hand weeding at 20 DAS while all the parameters showed lowest values in weedy check. Weed infestation reduced 80.07% yield compared to application of pre-emergence herbicide (Panida 33 EC) @ 2.5 l ha-1 + one hand weeding at 20 DAS. In case of interaction, the highest total tillers hill-1 (20.93), grains panicle-1 (102.3) and grain yield (5.86 t ha-1) were found in SRI method with pre-emergence herbicide (Panida 33 EC) @ 2.5 l ha-1 + one hand weeding at 20 DAT while the lowest total tillers hill-1 (10.97), grains panicle-1 (61.46) and grain yield (0.91 t ha-1) were found in conventional flood irrigation having no weeding treatment. The above results concludes that SRI method with pre-emergence herbicide (Panida 33 EC) @ 2.5 l ha-1 + one hand weeding at 20 DAS appeared as the promising technique for appreciable grain yield of Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan28)

    Growth performance of aromatic Boro rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan50) as influenced by date of transplanting and nutrient management

    The present experiment  was  conducted  at  the  Agronomy  Field  Laboratory,  Bangladesh Agricultural  University,  Mymensingh,  during  December  2015  to May  2016 to find out the effect of transplanting date and nutrient management on the growth performance of aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50). The experiment comprised five dates of transplanting viz. 15 December, 30 December, 15  January; 30  January and 15  February, and four nutrient managements viz., recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (N, P, K, S and Zn @ 115, 25, 60, 18, 3.5  kg ha-1,  respectively),  poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1, 50% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Morpho-physiological characteristics were significantly influenced by date of transplanting, nutrient management and their interactions. The highest plant height (71.41 cm) was recorded in early transplanting (15 December) and the lowest plant height (66.29 cm) was recorded when transplanted on 15 February. At 75 DAT, the tallest plant (72.79 cm), the highest number of tillers hill–1 (15.13) and LAI (2.78) were obtained in 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 and the shortest plant (66.63 cm) and lowest  number of tillers hill–1 (11.13) were recorded when applied only poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1. The highest dry matter production hill–1 (31.18 g) at 75 DAT was obtained when the crop was transplanted on 15 December and fertilized with 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1.  Therefore, aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50) can be transplanted on 15 December fertilized with 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 for appreciable growth performance

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during November 2016 to April 2017 to study the impact of nutrient management on the performance of aromatic fine rice in Boro season. The experiment comprised three varieties viz., BRRI dhan50, Basmati and BRRI dhan63; and  seven nutrient managements viz., poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (i.e. 250, 126, 120, 100 and 10 kg N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively ha-1), 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1, 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1, 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost 5 t ha-1, 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed that variety, nutrient management and their interaction exerted significant influence on yield components and yield of aromatic fine rice in Boro season. The highest grain yield (4.09 t ha-1), straw yield (6.20 t ha-1) and harvest index (39.37%) were obtained in BRRI dhan63 while the lowest grain yield (3.44 t ha-1) and harvest index (36.54%) were found in Basmati.  In case of nutrient management, the highest grain yield (4.31 t ha-1) was recorded in recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (i.e. 250, 126, 120, 100 and 10 kg N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively ha-1) which was as good as 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @ 5 t ha-1and 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 while the lowest one (2.74 t ha-1) was found in vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1. In case of interaction, the highest grain yield (5.30 t ha-1) was obtained in BRRI dhan63 along with 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1 while the highest straw yield (7.20 t ha-1) was produced in BRRI dhan63 fertilized with recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (i.e. 250, 126, 120, 100 and 10 kg N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively ha-1). Therefore, it can be concluded that BRRI dhan63 can be grown with 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @10 t ha-1 in Boro season to obtain the highest grain yield

    Performance of tropical sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) as influenced by date of harvesting

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2017 to April 2018 to study the effect of date of harvesting on the yield and quality of tropical sugar beet. The experiment comprised seven varieties viz. SV 889, SV 892, SV 893, SV 894, SZ 35, KWS Serenada and KWS Danicia and two dates of harvesting viz. 135 days after sowing (DAS) and 155 DAS. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Variety, date of harvesting and their interaction showed significant effect on crop characters, beet yield and juice quality of tropical sugar beet. The highest beet length (23.50 cm), individual beet weight (591.6 g) and beet yield (59.16 t ha-1) were recorded in SV 894 while the highest brix (15.42%) was observed in SV 893. The lowest beet yield (40.25 t ha-1) and brix (13.92%) were observed in KWS Danicia. In case of date of harvesting, the highest beet length (24.26 cm), beet girth (25.40 cm), individual beet weight (536.07 g) and beet yield (53.60 t ha-1) were observed at 155 DAS harvest while the highest brix (14.66%) was recorded at 135 DAS harvest. In interaction, the highest beet length (25.67 cm), individual beet weight (681.2 g) and beet yield (68.12 t ha-1) were recorded in SV 894 with 155 DAS harvest whereas the lowest beet yield (32.03 t ha-1) was recorded in the interaction in KWS Danicia with 135 DAS harvest. From this study, it may be concluded that SV 894 appears as the promising variety that can be harvested at 155 DAS

    Effect of nursery seeding density, age of seedling and number of seedlings hill−1 on the performance of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija)

    The cultivar Parija is a short duration transplanted Aus rice, which can be cultivated in between Boro and transplanted Aman rice without hampering their yield. Hence, research work on proper agronomic practices warrant due attention to augment the grain yield of this cultivar. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to July 2012 to examine the effect of nursery seeding density, age of seedling and number of seedlings hill−1 and their effects on the yield components and yield of short duration transplant Aus rice (cv. Parija). The experiment consisted of two nursery seeding densities viz. 40, 80 g seeds m−2, three ages of seedlings viz. 20-, 30- and 40-day old and three levels of seedlings hill−1 viz. 2, 4 and 6 seedlings hill−1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results showed that the treatments 40 g seed m−2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill−1 individually had significant effect on the total tillers hill−1, effective tillers hill−1, grains panicle−1 and sterility percentage. In consequence, the highest grain yields of 3.28, 3.35 and 3.5 t ha−1 were found at 40 g seed m−2, 30-day old seedlings and 4 seedlings hill−1, respectively. In case of interaction the highest grain yield (4.22 t ha−1) was found in 40 g seed m−2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill−1 which was at par with the interaction of 40 g seed m−2 × 30-day old seedlings × 6 seedlings hill−1 (3.84 t ha−1) and 80 g seed m−2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill−1. Considering both the individual and cumulative significant effects of the treatments on the yield components and grain yield, the use of 40 g seed m−2, 30-day-old seedlings and 4 seedlings hill−1 could improve the yield components and grain yield of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija). Therefore, short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija) can be cultivated maintaining a nursery seeding density of 40 g seed m−2 and 30-day old seedlings with 4 seedlings hill−1 for obtaining maximum grain yield

    Integrated nutrient management practices affect the growth performance of aromatic fine rice varieties in Boro season

    The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University during November 2016 to April 2017 to investigate the effect of nutrient management on the growth performance of some aromatic rice varieties in Boro season. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications considering two factors viz. varieties and nutrient management. This experiment consisted of three varieties viz., BRRI dhan50, Basmati and BRRI dhan63, and seven nutrient managements viz., poultry manure 5 t ha-1, recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (i.e. 250, 126, 120, 100 and 10 kg N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively ha-1), 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1, 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1, 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @ 5 t ha-1 and 50% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost @ 10 t ha-1. The results revealed that variety, nutrient management and their interaction exerted significant influence on growth characters of aromatic fine rice in Boro season. The highest plant height (55.14 cm, 66.14 cm) at 70 and 85 DAT, dry matter hill-1 (15.39 g) at 85 DAT and chlorophyll content (39.29) at 55 DAT was recorded from BRRI dhan63. While, Basmati produced the highest leaf area index (0.60) at 60 DAT and the highest number of total tillers hill-1 (11.52, 10.81, 9.619) was obtained from BRRI dhan50 at 55, 70, 85 DAT. In case of nutrient management practices, 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost 5 t ha-1 produced the highest plant height (45.22cm, 55.22cm, 65.67 cm) at 55, 70, 85 DAT, leaf area index (0.70) at 60 DAT and chlorophyll content (41.56) at 55 DAT, respectively. Again, from the interaction, it was observed that all the growth parameters were significantly influenced and increased with suitable variety along with proper nutrient management. Therefore, from this study, it can be decided that BRRI dhan63 fertilized along with 25% less than recommended dose of chemical fertilizer + vermicompost 5 t ha-1 might be the best possible combination for proper growth of plant

    Growth analysis of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija) under three agronomic practices

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to investigate the growth of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija) under three agronomic practices. The study comprised of two nursery seeding densities viz. 40 and 80 g seeds m-2, three ages of seedlings viz. 20, 30 and 40-day old, and three levels of seedlings hill-1 viz. 2, 4 and 6 seedlings hill-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. For individual treatment effects, the highest plant height, number of tillers hill-1, total dry matter, leaf area index and crop growth rate were found when seedlings were raised @ 40g seed m-2 and 30-day old seedlings were transplanted @4 seedlings hill-1. In interaction, the highest number of tillers hill-1 (13.00) and total dry matter (22.93 g) at 45 DAT, and crop growth rate (6.71 g m-2 day-1) at 15-30 DAT were obtained from the interaction among 40 g seed m-2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill-1. On the other hand, the tallest plant (73.27 cm) at 45 DAT was found from the interaction among 80 g seed m-2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill-1, while the highest leaf area index (2.87) was recorded from the interaction of 40 g seed m-2 × 30-day old seedlings × 2 seedlings hill-1 at 50 DAT. Considering both the significant individual and interaction treatment effects on the growth parameters, the use of 40 g seed m-2 × 30-day old seedlings × 4 seedlings hill-1 could improve the growth performance of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija). Therefore, a nursery seeding density of 40 g seed m-2 and 30-day old seedlings transplanting with 4 seedlings hill-1 appears as the promising combination in respect of growth performance of short duration transplanted Aus rice (cv. Parija)
