    PELATIHAN PENGUASAAN KOSAKATA BAHASA INGGRIS DENGAN MENERAPKAN MODEL PEMBELAJARAN MAKE A MATCH BAGI SISWA SD DI KELURAHAN TUNGGURONO KOTA BINJAI

    Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan selama 2 (dua) hari yakni pada hari Sabtu-Minggu, 25-26 Agustus 2018 pukul 16.00 WIB-18.00 WIB. Peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dengan kisaran usia 6 tahun-12 tahun. Adapun jumlah peserta didik dalam pelatihan ini adalah sebanyak 16 orang. Model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) merupakan model pembelajaran yang dikembangkan oleh Lorn Curran pada tahun 1994 di mana setiap siswa mendapat sebuah kartu (bisa soal atau jawaban) lalu secepatnya mencari pasangan yang sesuai dengan kartu yang ia pegang.  Penerapan model pembelajaran ini dimulai dengan teknik, yaitu siswa diminta mencari pasangan kartu yang merupakan jawaban atau soal sebelum batas waktunya. Siswa yang dapat mencocokan kartunya diberi poin/nilai. Adapun keuntungan menerapkan model pembelajaran Make A Match (Mencari Pasangan) adalah sebagai berikut: 1) mampu menciptakan suasana aktif dan menyenangkan; 2) materi pembelajaran yang disampaikan lebih menarik perhatian siswa; 3) mampu meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa mencapai taraf ketuntasan belajar; 4) suasana kegembiraan akan tumbuh dalam proses pembelajaran; 5) kerja sama antar siswa terwujud dengan dinamis; dan 6) munculnya dinamika gotong royong yang merata di seluruh siswa. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi masyarakat khususnya bagi siswa SD di Kelurahan Tunggurono Kota Binjai dan menciptakan kebermanfaatan antara Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas dengan masyarakat secara umum.

    Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat yang bertema Become A Vocabulary Collector: Pengabdian pada Masyarakat bagi Mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Sastra Universitas Darma Agung dilaksanakan secara daring dengan menggunakan aplikasi Google Meet. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini berlangsung selama dua hari (Jumat, 03 Juni 2022 dan Jumat, 10 Juni 2022) pukul 08.30 WIB – 10.00 WIB. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan motivasi mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Sastra Universitas Darma Agung dalam mempelajari kosakata bahasa Inggris berbasis Vocabulary Section pada tes TOEFL model PBT dan phrasal verbs serta membekali mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Sastra Universitas Darma Agung dengan pembelajaran dan pelatihan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris berbasis Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Section pada tes TOEFL model PBT dan phrasal verbs. Jumlah mahasiswa yang turut serta pada pelatihan ini adalah 18 orang. Peserta pelatihan merasa antusias mempelajari kosakata bahasa Inggris Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Section pada tes TOEFL model PBT dan phrasal verbs. Melalui pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini peserta pelatihan memperoleh pengalaman belajar dan kesempatan untuk memperkaya kosakata bahasa Inggris sehingga mereka lebih fasih dan kreatif berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. &nbsp

    Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui kemampuan pemahaman matematika mahasiswa ditinjau berdasarkan penilaian portofolio dan mengetahui prinsip-prinsip dokumentasi portofolio terhadap kemampuan pemahaman matematika mahasiswa. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif.  Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa prodi pendidikan guru sekolah dasar semester dua yang mengambil matakuliah Konsep Dasar Matematika yang terdiri dari satu kelas. Objek penelitian adalah proses tindakan yang dilakukan yaitu kemampuan pemahaman matematika berbasis penilaian portofolio. Berdasarkan analisis data disimpulkan bahwa prinsip-prinsip dokumentasi portofolio terhadap kemampuan pemahaman matematika mahasiswa pada matakuliah konsep dasar matematika SD setiap materi memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda dan kemampuan pemahaman matematika mahasiswa jika ditinjau berdasarkan penilaian portofolio setiap materi memiliki karakteristik yang berbed

    IMPROVING THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS BY USING PICTURES MEDIA AT SWASTA GKPI MEDAN

    Writing as one of the language skills is not as easy as one thinks because it needs some exact requirements to create topic sentence, controlling idea, supporting sentences, concluding sentence, etc. It is not surprising that students have difficulty in writing. The students could not describe thing, place or person because they could not express their ideas and they have limited vocabulary. Thus, they need some ways or media which could help them write descriptive texts. The teacher should be creative to search for interesting media to teach writing descriptive texts. Pictures media can help students to express and elaborate their ideas into a writing. The objectives of this study are to prove that the use of pictures media can improve the students’ skill in writing descriptive texts and to describe the responses of the students towards the use of pictures media in writing descriptive texts. The subjects of this study are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta GKPI Medan Class XI IPS 1 in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. In conducting this research, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. Tests were used to gather the quantitative data. In addition, field notes and observation sheet were used to gather the qualitative data. Based on, the findings of this study, there were 4 students (12%) who passed the Mastery Minimum Criteria (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal) 75 in pretest, 12 students (36%) in formative test and 29 students (87%) in posttest. The result of this research revealed that there is a significant improvement of the students’ achievement from pretest, formative test and in the post test. This improvement was shown by the comparison between the students’ mean score of pretest (43.75), formative test (70.6), and posttest (84.4). Based on the questionnaire results, the students’ responses are very good. They agreed that using pictures media could improve their achievement in writing descriptive texts.  Furthermore, the students found it interesting to learn how to write descriptive texts by using pictures media. It can be seen from their full attention during the learning teaching processes. Therefore, it is recommended for the teachers to use pictures media in improving their students’ writing skill especially in writing descriptive texts

    ERROR ANALYSIS IN USING SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE IN DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPHS MADE BY THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP KATOLIK TRISAKTI 1 MEDAN

    This research method used a case study method. The subject of this included the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Katolik Trisakti 1 Medan. Which is comprised of 30 stusents. In analysis the datan the writer collected the data from the students identifiedthe grammatical errors, classified the errors of using simple present tense in the students’ descriptive paragraph to determine the frequency of errors, and calculated the data into percentages. The data by using formula:P= fnx100%  P= Percentage, F= Frequency of error made, N= Total of students’ errors.the data was taken from the test: it was written test. The result demonstrate that the students’ errors can be categorized into four kinds of errors. Which include 14,7% errors of omission, 6,7% errors of additon, 73,3% errors in misformation and 5% error in misordering. The writer observed 218 total errors. The witer concluded that misformation was the dominant kind of errors Made by the Seventh Grade of SMP Katolik Trisakti 1 Medan. The teacher recommended practicing grammatical rules in Simple Present Tense in order to minimize the errors. Morever, other researchers can provide techniques in increase students’ mastery of simple present tense

    IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF THE TWELFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 BATANG KUIS THROUGH GROUP INVESTIGATION METHOD

    Reading is not only about pronouncing written words correctly but also comprehending the text. It is not surprising that students have difficulties in reading comprehension. For example: Students cannot understand and share information of the text. Thus, there must be a method which can help them read effectively. Group Investigation method can help improve the students’ reading comprehension and motivation to read. The objectives of this research are to find out that Group Investigation method improves students’ reading comprehension and to describe the students’ responses towards learning teaching process of reading comprehension through the application of Group Investigation method. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted by applying Group Investigation method to the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Batang Kuis. After six meetings, it could be seen that there is a significant improvement of the students’ reading comprehension. The results of the tests showed that the students’ mean score in the pretest is 60.25 with 15.62% of the students who got score > 75, the students’ mean score in the formative test is 71.25 with 28.12% of the students who got score > 75, and the students’ mean score in the posttest is 78.87 with 71.87% of the students who got score > 75. The quantitative data analysis showed that there is a significant mean score increase from pretest to posttest, namely about 56.25%. The qualitative data analysis showed that the students’ responses towards the application of Group Investigation method in the learning teaching processes of reading comprehension on narrative texts are very positive. They agree that the application of Group Investigation method could help them improve their reading comprehension. It is suggested that English teachers apply Group Investigation method as an alternative to improve their students’ reading comprehension

    This research is aimed to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through the application of crossword puzzle game. The subject of this research of the eighth grade students of SMP Swasta Dharma Bakti Medan. This research was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was performed in two cycles (cycle I and cycle II) and each cycle consisted of three meetings. This instrument of collecting data are quantitative (vocabulary test) data and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet and photograph evidences).the result of vocabulary test as the quantitative data show that mean of students’ score increased continuously from pre-test 36,71, post-test in cycle I 64.10, to post-test cycle II 78,48. The diary notes, observation sheet and photograph evidences as qualitative data showed that the teaching and learning process ran well. It was found that crossword puzzle game could improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It is suggested that teachers of English should apply crossword puzzle game as one of the game in teaching vocabulary mastery

    IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH WORD WALLS STRATEGY TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP SWASTA KARYA BHAKTI MEDAN

    This study is aimed to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through word walls strategy. This strategy is one of appropriate strategies in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The subject of this study is the eighth grade students of SMP Swasta Karya Bhakti Medan Class VIII A in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was performed in two cycles (cycle I and Cycle II) and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (vocabulary tests) and qualitative data (observation sheets, daily notes, and photograph evidences). The results of vocabulary tests showed that the mean of the students’ score increased continuously from pre-test (8 %), formative test in cycle I (44 %) to post-test in cycle II (92 %). The observation sheets, daily notes, and photograph evidences showed that the students are interested in the teaching and learning processes through word walls strategy and this study ran well. It was found that word walls strategy could improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It is suggested that teachers of English should apply word walls strategy as one of the strategies in teaching vocabulary mastery

    IMPROVING THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL OF SMP ANASTASIA THROUGH SOMATIC AUDITORY VISUALIZATION AND INTELLECTUAL (SAVI) METHOD IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2021/2022

    This research was primarily conducted to prove that the application of Somatic Auditory Visualization and Intellectual (SAVI) method could improve the eighth grade students’ speaking skill of SMP Anastasia and to describe their responses towards the application SAVI method in learning speaking skill. This research is Classroom Action Research which was performed in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The quantitative data analysis showed that the students mean score increase continuously from 63,45 in Pre-Test, 69,7 in Formative Test and 73,9 in Post- Test. The qualitative data analysis showed that the students gave good responses towards the application of the SAVI method. The students felt more enthusiastic and motivated to learn speaking skill after the SAVI method was applied. To sum up, the application of SAVI method could improve students’ speaking skill. It is advisable that English teachers apply the SAVI method in teaching speaking skill

    This thesis discusses about the improving students’ vocabulary mastery by using pictures media to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Medan. This study applies pictures, one of media which can be used by the teacher to build students’ mastery of vocabularies. To master the language, vocabulary is important element in learning process. This statement is supported by Thornbury. He said that without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed. This study is a field study in two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting data, I used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data are observation sheet, and questionaire and field notes. The qualitative data were collected through observing the teaching learning process, holding the discussion with the teacher, and taking photographs of the teaching learning process. The quantitative data are pre-test and post-test to measure the students’ vocabulary mastery by using pictures media. The instruments for collecting data were observations checklist, field notes, and photographs. This study concludes that the students’ vocabulary mastery is improved by using pictures media. It can be seen from the means score of pre test is 65, and post test is 78. In additional, the implementation pictures media are successful to help the students memorize and understand new words easily
