    Wave Speed Propagation Measurements on Highly Attenuative Wax at Elevated Temperatures

    Ultrasonic stress wave amplitude and time-of-flight values change drastically as a media is heated. The measurement of relatively small variations in velocity and material attenuation can detect and quantify significant variations within a material microstructure. This paper discusses experimental setups, ultrasonic wave speed tracking methods and signal analysis algorithms that document the changes within highly attenuative wax material as it is either being heated or cooled from 25ËšC to 90ËšC. The experimental set-up utilizes ultrasonic probes in a pulse-echo and through-transmission configuration. The ultrasonic waveforms are recorded and analyzed during long duration thermal experiments. To complement the ultrasonic data, a Discontinuous-Galerkin Model (DGM) was also created which uses unstructured meshes to determine how waves travel in these anisotropic media. This numerical method solves particle motion travel using partial differential equations and outputs a wave trace per unit time. Both experimental and analytical data is compared and presented. Finally, the paper describes a series of additional experiments that are currently under investigation which will aid code development to adjust for density variations

This guide is intended for researchers familiar with some latent variable modeling but not LPA specifically. A general procedure for conducting LPA is provided in six steps: (a) data inspection, (b) iterative evaluation of models, (c) model fit and interpretability, (d) investigation of patterns of profiles in a retained model, (e) covariate analysis, and (f) presentation of results.     Reliability of center of pressure measures during successive ski-simulated squat tasks

    Laboratory assessments of alpine ski tasks have the potential to be an effective initial investigation method prior to more intensive on-snow testing. Research questions involving acute changes elicited by sport-essential equipment would be an ideal application for such investigations. The purpose of the current study was to determine the reliability of a ski-simulated squat task on centre of pressure indices. Successive squat tasks were performed in skis at a ski-simulated rhythm and analysed during four experimental conditions. Reliability analysis via repeated measures ANOVAs and intraclass correlation coefficients resulted in good to excellent reliability of centre of pressure outputs. The current study proposes a laboratory test that is reliable and encompasses biomechanical challenges presented by the alpine ski boot-binding complex

    The Experiences of American Indian Participants and Site Coordinators in a Gestational Diabetes Risk Reduction Trial

    Gestational diabetes mellitus is the most common complication of pregnancy and contributes to increased risk for type 2 diabetes in both the mother and offspring. We developed and evaluated a gestational diabetes risk reduction and preconception counseling program, Stopping GDM (SGDM), for American Indian females. The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of American Indian mother-daughter dyad participants and the site coordinators who facilitated the SGDM randomized controlled trial to inform program revisions. We engaged mother-daughter dyads (n = 22 dyads) and site coordinators (n = 6) in focus group interviews. Four themes emerged: (1) SGDM sparked valuable quality conversation for dyads; (2) gestational diabetes risk factors and risk reduction was new information for most dyads; (3) all trial sites experienced challenges to recruitment and engagement; and (4) study-improvement recommendations. These findings will be used to enhance SGDM to decrease adverse intergenerational health impacts of gestational diabetes in American Indian communities

    JOINT COORDINATION ADAPTATIONS TO AN IMPLEMENTED RAMP ANGLE IN RECREATIONAL ALPINE SKIERS

    Most ski boot-binding complexes have a positive ramp angle. This angle is not regulated or reported in the alpine ski industry, but may influence skier balance and pressure control. Therefore joint coordination during a dynamic ski squat task with increasing boot ramp angle (0°, 1°, 2°) in alpine skiers (n=19) was investigated. Average joint coupling angles were significantly different between barefoot and ski conditions, as well as between the three ramp angles during the upward phase of a squat. The percentage of squat with uncoordinated knee-ankle joint movements tended to increase in ski conditions versus barefoot conditions, and coordinated hip-knee movement was reduced with alpine boot-binding-ski complexes. These differences in joint coordination and average coupling angles may impact skier balance and pressure control across the ski while skiing

    An Automated Image-Based Method for Rapid Analysis of Chlamydia Infection as a Tool for Screening Antichlamydial Agents

Copyright American Society for MicrobiologyA major limitation in the identification of novel antichlamydial compounds is the paucity of effective methods for large-scale compound screening. The immunofluorescence assay is the preferred approach for accurate quantification of the intracellular growth of Chlamydia. In this study, an immunofluorescence image-based method (termed image-based automated chlamydial identification and enumeration [iBAChIE]) was customized for fully automated quantification of Chlamydia infection using the freely available open-source image analysis software program CellProfiler and the complementary data exploration software program CellProfiler Analyst. The method yielded enumeration of different species and strains of Chlamydia highly comparably to the conventional manual methods while drastically reducing the analysis time. The inhibitory capability of established antichlamydial activity was also evaluated. Overall, these data support that iBAChIE is a highly effective tool for automated quantification of Chlamydia infection and assessment of antichlamydial activities of molecules. Furthermore, iBAChIE is expected to be amenable to high-throughput screening studies for inhibitory compounds and fluorescently labeled molecules to study host-pathogen interactions

    Marine mammal necropsy : an introductory guide for stranding responders and field biologists

    This necropsy manual is designed to establish a base level of profiency in marine mammal necropsy techniques. It is written for stranding network members who do not have a formal pathobiological training and have limited knowledge of anatomy. Anatomical and pathological jargon has been kept to a minimum. This manual is divided into six sections: preliminary data, sample management, pinniped, small ceetacean, large whale (at sea and on the beach), and multiple appendices (A-H). A well-illustrated, carefully written gross necropsy report is essential to an adequate diagnostic investigation. Gross reports with significant detail and description tend to engender useful histopathological findings. A sample blank gross necropsy report and guidelines in writing a report can be found in Appendices A & B. Overall, this guide aims to lead the enquiring mind through the necessary steps to produce such reports. While this manual focuses on process and interpretation, it is important to understand that the gross necropsy is primarily about making detailed, descriptive observations without bias as to possible etiology.
