External Influences of Children\u27s Socialization to Gender Roles

It is evident in North American society that there are certain roles placed on boys and girls in accordance with their gender. These gender roles are imposed on children from birth and are taught until eventually they are accepted as absolute truth. Newborn babies are carried out of the hospital in either a pink blanket or a blue blanket depending on gender. Gifts of trucks or dolls are given to toddlers depending on the child\u27s sex. Stories about princesses are read to little girls, while stories of dragons and swords are read to little boys. This socialization of gender roles is reinforced through the family, media, and education system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of childhood on adults\u27 opinions of gender roles. It was hypothesized that this study would lend support to the theory that family has an influential role in determining one\u27s views of gender. However, the findings did not support the hypothesis that college students from non-traditional families would hold more non-traditional gender role stereotypes than children from traditional families

This lithograph is a Northern depiction of the capture of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Titled The Last Ditch of the Chivalry, or a President in Petticoats , and picturing Davis in a woman’s dress and bonnet, the Northern press painted Davis as a coward. Rather than being a man and standing up to the Union troops, Davis disguised himself as a woman and attempted to cowardly escape. Although in actuality Davis was wearing a rain jacket and shawl rather than a full dress and bonnet, the Northern press mocked him. This piece demonstrates the prominence of male Southern honor, and how the ideals of being a man contradicted with the expectations for women. Davis’ flee also symbolizes the fall of the Confederacy

The Black Hole Mass - Stellar Velocity Dispersion Relationship for Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7

We assess evolution in the black hole mass - stellar velocity dispersion relationship (M-sigma relationship) for quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 for the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1.2. We estimate the black hole mass using the "photoionization method," with the broad Hbeta or Mg II emission line and the quasar continuum luminosity. For the stellar velocity dispersion, we use the narrow [O III] or [O II] emission line as a surrogate. This study is a follow-up to an earlier study in which we investigated evolution in the M-sigma relationship in quasars from Data Release 3. The greatly increased number of quasars in our new sample has allowed us to break our lower-redshift subsample into black hole mass bins and probe the M-sigma relationship for constant black hole mass. The M-sigma relationship for the highest-mass (log M > 9 solar masses) and lowest-mass (log M < 7.5 solar masses) black holes appears to evolve significantly, however most or all of this apparent evolution can be accounted for by various observational biases due to intrinsic scatter in the relationship and to uncertainties in observed quantities. The M-sigma relationship for black holes in the middle mass range (7.5 < log M < 9 solar masses) shows minimal change with redshift. The overall results suggest a limit of +/- 0.2 dex on any evolution in the M-sigma relationship for quasars out to z ~ 1 compared with the relationship observed in the local universe. Exertional sickling: Questions and controversy

Sickle cell trait (SCT) occurs in about 8% of African-Americans and is often described to be of little clinical consequence. Over time, a number of risks have emerged, and among these are rare but catastrophic episodes of sudden death in athletes and other individuals associated with physical activities which is often described as exercise collapse associated with sickle trait (ECAST). Despite an epidemiologic link between SCT and sudden death as well as numerous case reports in both medical literature and lay press, no clear understanding of the key pathophysiologic events has been identified. Strategies for identification of individuals at risk and prevention of ECAST have been both elusive and controversial. Stakeholders have advocated for different approaches to this issue particularly with regard to screening for hemoglobin S. Furthermore, the recommendations and guidelines that are in place for the early recognition of ECAST and the prevention and treatment of the illness are not well defined and remain fragmented. Among the cases identified, those in collegiate football players in the United States are often highlighted. This manuscript examines these case studies and the current recommendations to identify areas of consensus and controversy regarding recommendations for prevention, recognition and treatment of ECAST
