Soil acidity and the liming of Iowa soils
Whether or not their lands will give better crop yields if lime1 is applied has become a live question with Iowa farmers. They have written many letters of inquiry upon this point to the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station and hundreds of soil samples have been analyzed to make satisfactory answer.
To provide more complete information relative to this important question of soil acidity and the use of lime in Iowa, the agronomy section of the experiment station gathered many soil samples from well scattered localities in the principal soil areas. These were analyzed and the results are now presented and discussed in this bulletin. These analyses show that liming is likely to be profitable in the Mississippi loess, the Southern Iowa loess and the Iowan drift areas because those soils are very apt to be more or less acid; also, that the soils of the Wisconsin drift are only occasionally in need of liming, and those of the Missouri loess only very rarely
Implications of a High-Mass Diphoton Resonance for Heavy Quark Searches
Heavy vector-like quarks coupled to a scalar will induce a coupling of
this scalar to gluons and possibly (if electrically charged) photons. The decay
of the heavy quark into , with being a Standard Model quark, provides,
if kinematically allowed, new channels for heavy quark searches. Inspired by
naturalness considerations, we consider the case of a vector-like partner of
the top quark. For illustration, we show that a singlet partner can be searched
for at the 13TeV LHC through its decay into a scalar resonance in the
final states, especially if the diphoton branching ratio of
the scalar is further enhanced by the contribution of non coloured
particles. We then show that conventional heavy quark searches are also
sensitive to this new decay mode, when decays hadronically, by slightly
tightening the current selection cuts. Finally, we comment about the
possibility of disentangling, by scrutinising appropriate kinematic

No effect of epoprostenol on right ventricular diameter in patients with acute pulmonary embolism: a randomized controlled trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Right ventricular dilatation in the setting of acute pulmonary embolism is associated with an adverse prognosis. Treatment with a pulmonary vasodilator has never been studied systematically. We evaluated the effect of epoprostenol on right ventricular diameter and function in patients with acute pulmonary embolism and right ventricular dilatation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a randomized, single-blind study, 14 patients with acute pulmonary embolism received epoprostenol or placebo infusion for 24 hours on top of conventional treatment. Effects on right ventricular end-diastolic diameter, systolic pulmonary artery pressure, right ventricle fractional area changeand tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion were assessed by serial echocardiography. Furthermore Troponin T and NT-proBNP were measured serially.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Compared to placebo, epoprostenol was associated with a relative change from baseline in right ventricular end-diastolic diameter of +2% after 2.5 hours and -8% after 24 hours. Epoprostenol did not have a significant effect on systolic pulmonary artery pressure, right ventricular fractional area change and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, nor on biochemical parameters.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In patients with acute pulmonary embolism and right ventricular overload, treatment with epoprostenol did not improve right ventricular dilatation or any other measured variables of right ventricular overload.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p><it>Registration</it>: URL: NCT01014156</p> <p><it>Medical ethical committee</it>: Medisch-ethische toetsingscommissie (METc) from the VUmc (free university medical centre)</p

The Universal One-Loop Effective Action
We present the universal one-loop effective action for all operators of
dimension up to six obtained by integrating out massive, non-degenerate
multiplets. Our general expression may be applied to loops of heavy fermions or
bosons, and has been checked against partial results available in the
literature. The broad applicability of this approach simplifies one-loop
matching from an ultraviolet model to a lower-energy effective field theory
(EFT), a procedure which is now reduced to the evaluation of a combination of
matrices in our universal expression, without any loop integrals to evaluate.
We illustrate the relationship of our results to the Standard Model (SM) EFT,
using as an example the supersymmetric stop and sbottom squark Lagrangian and
extracting from our universal expression the Wilson coefficients of

Effective description of general extensions of the Standard Model: the complete tree-level dictionary

the dimension-six Standard-Model effective theory in ultraviolet completions with general

infrared dictionary at the classical level, which can be used to study the low-energy
implications of any model of interest, and also to look for explicit completions consistent

A single base mutation in the androgen receptor gene causes androgen insensitivity in the testicular feminized rat.
The complete form of androgen insensitivity is an inherited X-linked syndrome in which genetic males fail to undergo masculinization in utero due to defective functioning of the androgen receptor (AR). The molecular basis of androgen insensitivity was investigated in the testicular feminized (Tfm) rat with this syndrome. AR mRNA size and amount, as well as nuclear AR protein revealed by immunocytochemistry, suggested normal expression of the AR gene in the Tfm rat. Sequence analysis of the AR coding region from Tfm and wild-type littermate male rats revealed a single transition mutation, guanine to adenine, within exon E, changing arginine 734 to glutamine within the steroid-binding domain of the AR. This arginine is highly conserved among the family of nuclear receptors and may be part of a phosphorylation recognition site. A recreated mutant AR (Arg734----Gln) expressed in COS cells had only 10-15% of the androgen-binding capacity of wild-type AR; the reduced androgen-binding capacity was similar to that of AR in tissue extracts of the Tfm rat. Stimulation of transcriptional activity by the recreated mutant AR was reduced relative to wild-type AR in cotransfection assays in CV1 cells using as reporter plasmid the mouse mammary tumor virus promoter linked to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene. Thus, arginine 734 appears essential for normal AR function both in androgen binding and transcriptional activation. Absence of these functions results in androgen insensitivity and lack of male sexual development
Nano-manipulation of diamond-based single photon sources
The ability to manipulate nano-particles at the nano-scale is critical for
the development of active quantum systems. This paper presents a new technique
to manipulate diamond nano-crystals at the nano-scale using a scanning electron
microscope, nano-manipulator and custom tapered optical fibre probes. The
manipulation of a ~ 300 nm diamond crystal, containing a single
nitrogen-vacancy centre, onto the endface of an optical fibre is demonstrated.
The emission properties of the single photon source post manipulation are in
excellent agreement with those observed on the original substrate.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
