The Transition to College Process in PR-CETP Scholars
This article describes a study about the experiences of a group of students during the transition from high school to college. The students are future teachers who evidenced a high level of academic achievement in high school and received merit scholarships from the Puerto Rico Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (PR-CETP). Two groups of students were compared: those who sustained a high GPA during their freshman year, and those who did not and, therefore, no longer qualified for the scholarship. The study was carried out through focused interviews with eight students, from three universities, four of whom maintained the scholarship and four who did not. Findings indicate that the main problems encountered were academic and social, and that the students received support from their families during the entire process. Regarding formal support, they pointed out that they felt highly satisfied with the services provided by PR-CETP and the universities, but they also pointed out (particularly those who lost the scholarship) that they needed additional services from the universities. They suggested, for example, better tutoring, and social activities among the scholars. The interviewed students, in general, consider that they faced the transition successfully since most of them described their academic, emotional, and social status as satisfactory at the time of the interviews
Bulk Fermions in Warped Models with a Soft Wall
We study bulk fermions in models with warped extra dimensions in the presence
of a soft wall. Fermions can acquire a position dependent bulk Dirac mass that
shields them from the deep infrared, allowing for a systematic expansion in
which electroweak symmetry breaking effects are treated perturbatively. Using
this expansion, we analyze properties of bulk fermions in the soft wall
background. These properties include the realization of non-trivial boundary
conditions that simulate the ones commonly used in hard wall models, the
analysis of the flavor structure of the model and the implications of a heavy
top. We implement a soft wall model of electroweak symmetry breaking with
custodial symmetry and fermions propagating in the bulk. We find a lower bound
on the masses of the first bosonic resonances, after including the effects of
the top sector on electroweak precision observables for the first time, of
m_{KK} \gtrsim 1-3 TeV at the 95% C.L., depending on the details of the Higgs,
and discuss the implications of our results for LHC phenomenology.Comment: 34 pages, 8 figure
Modeling non-thermal emission from stellar bow shocks
Runaway O- and early B-type stars passing throughout the interstellar medium
at supersonic velocities and characterized by strong stellar winds may produce
bow shocks that can serve as particle acceleration sites. Previous theoretical
models predict the production of high energy photons by non-thermal radiative
processes, but their efficiency is still debated. We aim to test and explain
the possibility of emission from the bow shocks formed by runaway stars
traveling through the interstellar medium by using previous theoretical models.
We apply our model to AE Aurigae, the first reported star with an X-ray
detected bow shock, to BD+43 3654, in which the observations failed in
detecting high energy emission, and to the transition phase of a supergiant
star in the late stages of its life. From our analysis, we confirm that the
X-ray emission from the bow shock produced by AE Aurigae can be explained by
inverse Compton processes involving the infrared photons of the heated dust. We
also predict low high energy flux emission from the bow shock produced by BD+43
3654, and the possibility of high energy emission from the bow shock formed by
a supergiant star during the transition phase from blue to red supergiant.Bow
shock formed by different type of runaway stars are revealed as a new possible
source of high energy photons in our neighbourhood
Electroweak constraints on warped models with custodial symmetry
It has been recently argued that realistic models with warped extra
dimensions can have Kaluza-Klein particles accessible at the Large Hadron
Collider if a custodial symmetry, SU(2)_V \times P_{LR}, is used to protect the
T parameter and the coupling of the left-handed bottom quark to the Z gauge
boson. In this article we emphasize that such a symmetry implies that the loop
corrections to both the T parameter and the Z b_L \bar{b}_L coupling are
calculable. In general, these corrections are correlated, can be sizable, and
should be considered to determine the allowed parameter space region in models
with warped extra dimensions and custodial symmetry, including Randall-Sundrum
models with a fundamental Higgs, models of gauge-Higgs unification and
Higgsless models. As an example, we derive the constraints that arise on a
representative model of gauge-Higgs unification from a global fit to the
precision electroweak observables. A scan over the parameter space typically
leads to a lower bound on the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons of
about 2-3 TeV, depending on the configuration. In the fermionic sector one can
have Kaluza-Klein excitations with masses of a few hundred GeV. We present the
constraints on these light fermions from recent Tevatron searches, and explore
interesting discovery channels at the LHC.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figure
Effective geometry in Astrophysics
The effective metric is introduced by means of two examples (non-linear
electromagnetism and hydrodynamics),along with applications in Astrophysics. A
sketch of the generality of the effect is also given.Comment: 9 pages, contributions for the proceedings of the First International
