Phase transition in the massive Gross-Neveu model in toroidal topologies
We use methods of quantum field theory in toroidal topologies to study the
-component -dimensional massive Gross-Neveu model, at zero and finite
temperature, with compactified spatial coordinates. We discuss the behavior of
the large- coupling constant (), investigating its dependence on the
compactification length () and the temperature (). For all values of the
fixed coupling constant (), we find an asymptotic-freedom type of
behavior, with as and/or . At T=0, and for
(the strong coupling regime), we show that,
starting in the region of asymptotic freedom and increasing , a divergence
of appears at a finite value of , signaling the existence of a phase
transition with the system getting spatially confined. Such a spatial
confinement is destroyed by raising the temperature. The confining length,
, and the deconfining temperature, , are determined
as functions of and the mass () of the fermions, in the case of
. Taking as the constituent quark mass (), the
results obtained are of the same order of magnitude as the diameter () and the estimated deconfining temperature () of
hadrons.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Automatic grid refinement criterion for lattice Boltzmann method
In all kinds of engineering problems, and in particular in methods for
computational fluid dynamics based on regular grids, local grid refinement is
of crucial importance. To save on computational expense, many applications
require to resolve a wide range of scales present in a numerical simulation by
locally adding more mesh points. In general, the need for a higher (or a lower)
resolution is not known a priori, and it is therefore difficult to locate areas
for which local grid refinement is required. In this paper, we propose a novel
algorithm for the lattice Boltzmann method, based on physical concepts, to
automatically construct a pattern of local refinement. We apply the idea to the
two-dimensional lid-driven cavity and show that the automatically refined grid
can lead to results of equal quality with less grid points, thus sparing
computational resources and time. The proposed automatic grid refinement
strategy has been implemented in the parallel open-source library Palabos

Phase transition in the 3-D massive Gross-Neveu model
We consider the 3-dimensional massive Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature
as an effective theory for strong interactions. Using the Matsubara imaginary
time formalism, we derive a closed form for the renormalized -dependent
four-point function. This gives a singularity, suggesting a phase transition.
Considering the free energy we obtain the -dependent mass, which goes to
zero for some temperature. These results lead us to the conclusion that there
is a second-order phase transition.Comment: 06 pages, 02 figures, LATE
Screening nuclear field fluctuations in quantum dots for indistinguishable photon generation
A semiconductor quantum dot can generate highly coherent and
indistinguishable single photons. However, intrinsic semiconductor dephasing
mechanisms can reduce the visibility of two-photon interference. For an
electron in a quantum dot, a fundamental dephasing process is the hyperfine
interaction with the nuclear spin bath. Here we directly probe the consequence
of the fluctuating nuclear spins on the elastic and inelastic scattered photon
spectra from a resident electron in a single dot. We find the nuclear spin
fluctuations lead to detuned Raman scattered photons which are distinguishable
from both the elastic and incoherent components of the resonance fluorescence.
This significantly reduces two-photon interference visibility. However, we
demonstrate successful screening of the nuclear spin noise which enables the
generation of coherent single photons that exhibit high visibility two-photon
interference.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supplementary Informatio

Filamentous fungi in drinking water tanks of a water supply system in Recife-PE, Brazil
Drinking water reservoirs are widely used in various building constructions in
Brazil for as a source of potable water for users. However, they are susceptible to
the growth of microorganisms such as fungi. From these, several negative factors
may ensue, namely, unpleasant odors and flavours, pigments, biofilm formation
and mycotoxins. This is caused fungal resistance to treatment and disinfection.
Brazilian law and those of other countries offer no encouragement for the research
of the species of fungi that cause these problems. There are no legal limits as to
the presence in drinking water. This study assesses the occurrence of filamentous
fungi in drinking water reservoirs connected to the Alto do Céu distribution system
located in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Four monthly collections were carried out,
in triplicate, at two fixed points in the network, at the same treatment area, and
another 2.0 km away from this site. For water physicochemical characterization at
the time of collection, pH, temperature and free residual chlorine were analyzed.
Filamentous fungi were quantified by filtration through cellulose nitrate membrane
with a 0.45 μm porosity. All strains were grown in Petri dishes containing Peptone
Glucose, Rose Bengal Agar (PGRBA) and were incubated at 30°C for 48h. Fungal
occurrence was quantified as colony forming units (CFU) per litre. Twenty-four
samples were analyzed, and these accounted for 807 CFU. Considering the potential
for water spreading diseases, and the high toxicity of fungi into account it is
intended that this work may prompt the creation of acceptable parameters as to
the presence of fungi in drinking water networks
