    Viewers\u27 Involvement and Responses to an Entertainment Narrative in the Personal Television Environment

    This study explored the role of involvement in narrative persuasion in the personal television environment. The entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) has suggested that viewers’ involvement into a narrative story or with a character overcomes their resistance toward persuasive messages because when viewers are fully engaged in a program they are not motivated to scrutinize the messages and become less critical of the messages. With the increasing popularity of personal television viewing, this dissertation sought to expand the persuasive process of entertainment-education programs in the personal television environment. Furthermore, this study expanded the EORM by suggesting moral disengagement as a moderator in the process by which involvement reduces resistance. Finally, viewers’ responses toward watching personal television and how their comfort with characteristics of personal television was associated with involvement were examined. To accomplish the research goals, 354 college students watched an episode of the crime drama BoomTown about drinking and driving via an iPad. Participants completed a survey before and after watching the episode. Results showed that personal television viewers’ identification with the main character reduced perceived invulnerability, and increased story-consistent attitudes and behavioral intentions, as suggested by the EORM. However, contrary to predictions, neither transportation nor identification were associated with counterarguing, and counterarguing was not associated with attitudes or behavioral intentions. Moral disengagement was not a significant moderator in personal television viewers’ persuasive process, but moral disengagement toward the character’s drunk driving did marginally moderate the process by which identification reduced resistance, in particular, counterarguing. A moderation analysis showed that identification with the character significantly curtailed counterarguing when moral disengagement toward the character’s drunk driving was low or moderate, whereas identification was unrelated to counterarguing when moral disengagement toward his drunk driving was high. Finally, personal television viewers’ involvement was positively associated with their degree of comfort with the screen, the viewing distance, and using headphones.     Understanding User-Perceived Values of Mobile Streaming Service By Cognitive Mapping

    So-called, cable ‘cord-cutting’ phenomenon (Tefertiller, 2018), or watching video/TV contents over streaming service is currently considered as an industry-wide trend. Deloitte reported 55 percent of household in the U.S. is subscribing to at least one video streaming service, which is worth $2.1 billion a month (Wang, 2018). On top of the web-based streaming service to watch video or TV content, mobile-based streaming services are not uncommon anyway for many content consumers. Although such streaming services are getting popular in the mobile industry, very few academic research efforts have made so far to understand the values of the mobile streaming services, perceived by contents consumers over other traditional media channels. Hence, the current study aims to investigate the user-perceived values of mobile-based streaming services through the lens of socio-cognitive method. By using the cognitive mapping as a socio-cognitive method rooted from the theory of social representations (Durkheim, 1898; Wagner el al., 1996; Jung et al, 2009; Jung, 2013), our study explores the values that are associated with the mobile streaming services. To achieve the goal, we have collected data using a web-based survey from 432 users of mobile streaming services. They were asked to provide three words or short phrases that best describe mobile streaming services they currently use. As a next step of the study, authors will code data to extract concepts and analyze them using the cognitive mapping method including similarities calculation and core/peripheral concepts identification process. Finally, the structure of the perceptual map will be interpreted by the social representation framework. We look forward to finding the structure of cognitive map based on the mobile streaming users’ perceptions, and it eventually reveals the relationships among the perceived values (e.g., core/peripheral, positive/negative elements, etc.) associated with the mobile streaming services. Potential findings of our study is expected to contribute to both practitioners and academic scholars who are involved in mobile streaming services through 1) better understanding of the values of the services appreciated by the users, and 2) thus being able to emphasize its importance in the future marketing / service development efforts

    Education of History of Medicine for 80 Years: History and Current Status in Republic of Korea

    Medical history education enables the medical students to understand the humanistic aspects of medicine and also help to promote the professionalism of doctors. It makes them understand the disappearing or emerging diseases by recognizing the historical changes and trends to respond appropriately. Therefore, it is helpful to study and understand modern medicine.As of March 2023, 22 (55.0%) out of 40 medical schools in Republic of Korea have medical history course as an independent subject and two schools have integrated courses with medical ethics. Compared to 53.1% in 1995 and 56.2% in 2010, similar percentage of medical schools maintained the subject independently. However, the average credits of 18 schools in 2023(2.0) are higher than those of 1995(1.4) and 2010(1.2).The number of full-time professor who specialized in the history of medicine was 2 in 1995, 6 in 2010, and 11 in 2023. Generally, a full-time professor majoring medical history tend to have other duties besides the education and research of medical history, depending on the role of the department to which he or she belongs since they are assigned to the humanities education other than medical history education.Currently, the curriculums that have been recommended by Korea Association of Medical Colleges(KAMC), Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation(KIMEE), and The Korean Society of Medical Education(KSMED), emphasize medical humanities but do not necessarily include the medical history. As a result, medical history courses have increased slightly, but the other humanities classes have increased significantly since 2000.The knowledge of medical history will help students become a doctor, and a doctor with professionalism adapting to the rapidly changing medical environment. Students will also be able to establish the ideas they must pursue in the present era when they come into contact with numerous historical situations. And if they share a sense of history, they will inspire a sense of unity as a profession and will be more active in solving social problems such as health equity.It is hoped that The Korean Society for the History of Medicine will step forward to set the purpose and goal of the medical history education, and organize the contents of the education. Classes should be prepared so that students are interested in them, and education should be focused on how the contents of education will be able to be used in medicine. To this end, it is necessary to establish the basic learning outcomes of history of medicine, and prepare learning materials based on these learning outcomes. It is also necessary to increase the competencies of educators for the history of medicine, such as performing workshops.With the dedication of the pioneers who devoted their energy to the education of medical history, it is expected that medical history will find out what to do in medical education to foster better doctors and provide better education

    Interplay between CCN1 and Wnt5a in endothelial cells and pericytes determines the angiogenic outcome in a model of ischemic retinopathy

    CYR61-CTGF-NOV (CCN)1 is a dynamically expressed extracellular matrix (ECM) protein with critical functions in cardiovascular development and tissue repair. Angiogenic endothelial cells (ECs) are a major cellular source of CCN1 which, once secreted, associates with the ECM and the cell surface and tightly controls the bidirectional flow of information between cells and the surrounding matrix. Endothelium-specific CCN1 deletion in mice using a cre/lox strategy induces EC hyperplasia and causes blood vessels to coalesce into large flat hyperplastic sinuses with no distinctive hierarchical organization. This is consistent with the role of CCN1 as a negative feedback regulator of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor activation. In the mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR), pericytes become the predominant CCN1 producing cells. Pericyte-specific deletion of CCN1 significantly decreases pathological retinal neovascularization following OIR. CCN1 induces the expression of the non-canonical Wnt5a in pericyte but not in EC cultures. In turn, exogenous Wnt5a inhibits CCN1 gene expression, induces EC proliferation and increases hypersprouting. Concordantly, treatment of mice with TNP470, a non-canonical Wnt5a inhibitor, reestablishes endothelial expression of CCN1 and significantly decreases pathological neovascular growth in OIR. Our data highlight the significance of CCN1-EC and CCN1-pericyte communication signals in driving physiological and pathological angiogenesis

    Single and Compound Knock-outs of MicroRNA (miRNA)-155 and Its Angiogenic Gene Target CCN1 in Mice Alter Vascular and Neovascular Growth in the Retina via Resident Microglia

    The response of the retina to ischemic insult typically leads to aberrant retinal neovascularization, a major cause of blindness. The epigenetic regulation of angiogenic gene expression by miRNAs provides new prospects for their therapeutic utility in retinal neovascularization. Here, we focus on miR-155, a microRNA functionally important in inflammation, which is of paramount importance in the pathogenesis of retinal neovascularization. Whereas constitutive miR-155-deficiency in mice results in mild vascular defects, forced expression of miR-155 causes endothelial hyperplasia and increases microglia count and activation. The mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy, which recapitulates ischemia-induced aberrant neovessel growth, is characterized by increased expression of miR-155 and localized areas of microglia activation. Interestingly, miR-155 deficiency in mice reduces microglial activation, curtails abnormal vessel growth, and allows for rapid normalization of the retinal vasculature following ischemic insult. miR-155 binds to the 3'-UTR and represses the expression of the CCN1 gene, which encodes an extracellular matrix-associated integrin-binding protein that both promotes physiological angiogenesis and harnesses growth factor-induced abnormal angiogenic responses. Single CCN1 deficiency or double CCN1 and miR-155 knock-out in mice causes retinal vascular malformations typical of faulty maturation, mimicking the vascular alterations of miR-155 gain of function. During development, the miR-155/CCN1 regulatory axis balances the proangiogenic and proinflammatory activities of microglia to allow for their function as guideposts for sprout fusion and anastomosis. Under ischemic conditions, dysregulated miR-155 and CCN1 expression increases the inflammatory load and microglial activation, prompting aberrant angiogenic responses.     Whole-genome sequencing of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from the first listeriosis foodborne outbreak in South Korea

    Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis in humans with severe symptoms. In South Korea, listeriosis had only been reported sporadically among hospitalized patients until the first foodborne outbreak occurred in 2018. In this study, a L. monocytogenes strain responsible for this outbreak (FSCNU0110) was characterized via whole genome sequencing and compared with publicly available L. monocytogenes genomes of the same clonal complex (CC). Strain FSCNU0110 belonged to multilocus sequence typing (MLST)-based sequence type 224 and CC224, and core genome MLST-based sublineage 6,178. The strain harbored tetracycline resistance gene tetM, four other antibiotic resistance genes, and 64 virulence genes, including Listeria pathogenicity island 1 (LIPI-1) and LIPI-3. Interestingly, llsX in LIPI-3 exhibited a characteristic SNP (deletion of A in position 4, resulting in a premature stop codon) that was missing among all CC224 strains isolated overseas but was conserved among those from South Korea. In addition, the tetM gene was also detected only in a subset of CC224 strains from South Korea. These findings will provide an essential basis for assessing the characteristics of CC224 strains in South Korea that have shown a potential to cause listeriosis outbreaks

    Needs assessment for faculty development in dental education, at the University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR

    Due to the short history of dental education in Laos, the educational system is still incomplete, with only a few faculty development (FD) programs. This study aims to identify the needs assessment for FD, in Lao dental education. A survey was conducted, with dentists from the Faculty of Dentistry, in 2022. Data on demographics, perceived importance, and ability, on the 13 roles and competencies of teachers, as well as the 26 FD items’ needs assessment were collected. Data were compared between the two groups (lecturers and assistant teachers), and analyzed to identify different needs. Sixty-seven responses were included, after excluding inappropriate ones. Lecturers and assistant teachers expressed their needs for developing a syllabus, and teaching using simulation. Lecturers revealed the need to improve their roles as resource developers, followed by learning facilitators and lecturer in a classroom setting. Assistant teachers reported their prioritized needs for improving their role as on-the-job role models, followed by lecturer in a classroom setting, and mentor, personal adviser, or tutor. Assistant teachers showed higher educational needs scores than lecturers, in most questionnaire items. Although the needs assessment of FD indicates different needs, based on the differing roles and responsibilities, assistant teachers’ needs scores are generally higher. An FD program could prioritize the most common needs of both groups at an early stage, but the topics most needed by each group should also be considered. This study can inform a future FD program, to improve Lao dental education
