Study of pulse-code modulation.
This thesis document was issued under the authority of another institution, not NPS. At the time it was written, a copy was added to the NPS Library collection for reasons not now known. Â It has been included in the digital archive for its historical value to NPS. Â Not believed to be a CIVINS (Civilian Institutions) title.Pulse-code modulation (PCM) makes possible a transmission system in which the ultimate signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver is independent of the distance spanned, provided that noise peaks at the receiver remain below a sharply-defined threshold value of approximately half the signal strength. The advantages of such a system for long-distance communications are apparent. These advantages must be weighed, however, against the increased bandwidth required for transmission in any particular application.http://www.archive.org/details/studyofpulsecode00sangU.S. Navy (U.S.N.) author
