    We employ a multinomial probit model to understand the housing choice of Koreans, more specifically to understand the decision factors that affect Koreans’ housing decisions. The data used are from surveys conducted in July, 2006, and we use the Gibbs sampling technique in analyzing them. Apparently the housing decision is based on three dimensions–types of housing, size of places, and home ownership. A household may make its decision by simultaneously considering these three dimensions given its income and decision factors. Therefore, it would be ideal to categorize the alternatives based on these three dimensions. Due to the limited data, we treated the home ownership decision as if it were given outside the model or, in other words, as if a household made the decision before taking the type and size into account. From the results, we can see the followings: Firstly, the estimate of the coefficient of the alternative specific variables is negative and significant in all equations. Secondly, a household which decides to purchase housing is more likely to buy AS rather than HS. This is understandable considering Koreans’ inclination toward apartments

    Functional Characterization of Siberian Wild Rye Grass \u3cem\u3eEsHSP 16.9\u3c/em\u3e Gene Conferring Diverse Stress Tolerance in Prokaryotic Cells

    Siberian wild rye (Elymus sibiricus L.) is a perennial, caespitose, and self-pollinating grass indigenous to Northern Asia and also is widely distributed from Northern Europe to Japan. The plant shows strong environmental adaptability with tolerance to drought and cold; thus, it is often used as forage resources (Yan et al., 2007). Environmental stresses caused by global warming are acknowledged to be as a serious issue in agriculture due to reductions of crop productivity (Ahuja et al., 2010). Genetic natural breeding of Siberian wild rye would potentially increase the productivity of forage crops; however, genetic studies on this grass have yet to be conducted. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are the well characterized stress inducible proteins playing as molecular chaperones in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We have also identified two differently localized small Hsps: rice chloroplastic and alfalfa mitochondrial Hsps confer tolerance to oxidative and heat stresses in tall fescue and to salinity and arsenic stresses in E. coli, tobacco, and tall fescue, respectively (Lee et al., 2012a; Lee et al., 2012b). Here, we cloned the small Hsp16.9 gene from various heat stress-induced fragments in Siberian wild rye using differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis.     6MapNet: Representing soccer players from tracking data by a triplet network

    Although the values of individual soccer players have become astronomical, subjective judgments still play a big part in the player analysis. Recently, there have been new attempts to quantitatively grasp players' styles using video-based event stream data. However, they have some limitations in scalability due to high annotation costs and sparsity of event stream data. In this paper, we build a triplet network named 6MapNet that can effectively capture the movement styles of players using in-game GPS data. Without any annotation of soccer-specific actions, we use players' locations and velocities to generate two types of heatmaps. Our subnetworks then map these heatmap pairs into feature vectors whose similarity corresponds to the actual similarity of playing styles.     A Case of Oculomotor Nerve Paralysis Caused by Cavernous Sinus Metastasis of Tonsil Cancer

    Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with metastasis to the cavernous sinus (CS) is uncommon, and only a few cases have been described in the literature. The highest age-adjusted incidence rate for OSCC including the tonsil in males occurs in South Asians, and more cases should be reported to establish earlier identification and treatment. We report a case of OSCC in a 59-year-old male who underwent prompt endoscopic biopsy and early palliative radiation therapy to allow complete recovery of cranial nerve palsies to improve his quality of life, despite having a poor prognosis. Furthermore, this report emphasizes his dramatic resolution of symptoms after radiation therapy, highlighting the importance of rapid recognition and proper management

    Growth characteristics and productivity of cold-tolerant “Kowinearly” Italian ryegrass in the northern part of South Korea

    The objective of this research is to evaluate differences in growth characteristics and productivity between Kowinearly and Florida 80 Italian ryegrass varieties in regions with severely cold winters. This research was carried out in Suwon (in central South Korea) and Yonchun (in northern South Korea) during the 2002 2006 growing seasons. Kowinearly is a diploid variety with green leaf colour and a semi prostrate growth habit in autumn and a semi-erect one in spring. There were differences among the varieties in terms of cold tolerance, heading date, and forage yield in Yonchun. The winter field survival of Kowinearly was 85%, while that of Florida 80 was 43%. The dry matter yield of Kowinearly in Yonchun was 9,662 kg/ha, which was 31% more than that of Florida 80. In Suwon, the heading date of Kowinearly was May 7, which was 2 days later than that of Florida 80. In Yonchun, Kowinearly’s heading date was May 12, 1 day earlier than that of Florida 80. These results indicate that Kowinearly has good cold tolerance, and that in spring, it starts growth earlier than Florida 80, because of its higher cold tolerance.Keywords: Italian ryegrass, Kowinearly, cold tolerance, new variety, forage cro

    Calibration and sensitivity analysis of the RICEWQ Model

    Abstract The main objectives of this study are to calibrate the RICEWQ model with Korean field data and then analyse the sensitivity of the parameters to identify sensitive parameters. The RICEWQ is widely used to predict pesticide fate in a paddy plot. An experimental paddy plot of 0.2 ha(100 × 20 m) at Seobyeon-dong, Daegu, Korea was selected, and field observations for water and pesticide balance were performed from 4 June to 2 September 2006. The molinate, which is a herbicide widely used for weed control in rice culture, was selected. The RICEWQ model was successfully calibrated both for the water and pesticide mass balance. The calibrated model showed a RMSE of 0.537 cm for ponded water depths and a RMSE of 0.036 mg/L for the molinate concentrations in the ponded water. The most sensitive parameters for molinate concentrations in ponded water were the metabolism degradation rate in water, volatilization coefficient, and release rate for slow release formulation. In contrast, the RICEWQ model was not sensitive to parameters such as hydrolysis degradation rate in water and degradation rate in unsaturated soil

    Reflex Movements in Patients with Brain Death: A Prospective Study in A Tertiary Medical Center

    Reflex movements have been reported to occur in up to 75% of brain-dead patients, but this issue has not been addressed in Korea. The patients admitted to our hospital who met the criteria for brain death were enrolled between March 2003 and February 2005. The frequency and type of reflex movements in these patients were evaluated prospectively using a standardized protocol. Brain death was determined according to the guideline of Korean Medical Association. Of 26 patients who were included, five (19.2%) exhibited reflex movements such as the pronation-extension reflex, abdominal reflex, flexion reflex, the Lazarus sign, and periodic leg movements. This finding suggests that the frequency of spinal reflex movements is not rare and the awareness of these movements may prevent delays in brain-dead diagnosis and misinterpretations

    Enhanced black state induced by spatial silver nanoparticles in an electrochromic device

    The use of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical indium tin oxide (ITO) branches of electrochromic devices (ECDs) is an effective approach for increasing the optical properties via localized surface plasmon resonance compared with two- dimensional nanostructured electrodes. ECDs with 3D branches were designed to operate in transparent, mirror and black states. Finite- difference time- domain simulation was used to find the electrical field distributions in three types of ECD: glass/ITO with Ag film, glass/ITO branches and glass/ITO branches with Ag nanoparticles. The ECDs had an optical transmittance of 73.76% in the transparent state, a reflectance of 79.77% in the mirror state and a reflectance of 8.78% in the black state. We achieved an ECD with high stability that can show similar to 10 000 switching cycles among the three states.113Ysciescopu
