Analysis of Skin Humidity Variation Between Sasang Types
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between variations in skin humidity (SH) induced by perspiration across Sasang types and to identify novel and effective Sasang classification factors. We also analyzed the responses of each Sasang type to sweating-related QSCC II items. The results revealed a significant difference in SH across gender and significant differences in SH before and after perspiration between Tae-Eum and So-Eum men. In addition, Tae-Eum women showed significant differences in SH compared with women classified as another Sasang type. Furthermore, evaluation of the items related to sweating in the QSCC II and their relationship to each constitution revealed a significant difference between Tae-Eum and other Sasang types. Overall, the results of this study indicate that there is a distinct SH difference following perspiration between Tae-Eum and other Sasang types. Such findings may aid in Sasang typology diagnostic testing with the support of further sophisticated clinical studies
Multilayered Composites with Modulus Gradient for Enhanced Pressure???Temperature Sensing Performance
Highly sensitive and flexible composite sensors with pressure and temperature sensing abilities are of great importance in human motion monitoring, robotic skins, and automobile seats when checking the boarding status. Several studies have been conducted to improve the temperature-pressure sensitivity; however, they require a complex fabrication process for micro-nanostructures, which are material-dependent. Therefore, there is a need to develop the structural designs to improve the sensing abilities. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible composite with an enhanced pressure and temperature sensing performance. Its structural design consists of a multilayered composite construction with an elastic modulus gradient. Controlled stress concentration and distribution induced by a micropatterned structure between the layers improves its pressure and temperature sensing performance. The proposed composite sensor can monitor a wide range of pressure and temperature stimuli and also has potential applications as an automotive seat sensor for simultaneous human temperature detection and occupant weight sensing

expression must be coordinated in response to
external signals to promote alternative multicellular
developmental programs. The membrane-associated
trimeric complex VapA-VipC-VapB controls a
signal transduction pathway for fungal differentiation.
The VipC-VapB methyltransferases are tethered
to the membrane by the FYVE-like zinc finger protein
VapA, allowing the nuclear VelB-VeA-LaeA complex
to activate transcription for sexual development.
Once the release from VapA is triggered, VipCVapB
is transported into the nucleus. VipC-VapB
physically interacts with VeA and reduces its nuclear
import and protein stability, thereby reducing the
nuclear VelB-VeA-LaeA complex. Nuclear VapB
methyltransferase diminishes the establishment of
facultative heterochromatin by decreasing histone 3
lysine 9 trimethylation (H3K9me3). This favors activation
of the regulatory genes brlA and abaA, which
promote the asexual program. The VapA-VipCVapB
methyltransferase pathway combines control
of nuclear import and stability of transcription factors
with histone modification to foster appropriate differentiation
responses
Quantitative Measurement of Muscle Atrophy and Fat Infiltration of the Supraspinatus Muscle Using Ultrasonography After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair
ObjectiveTo investigate the utility of ultrasonography to objectively examine morphological changes (i.e., muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration) of the supraspinatus muscle.MethodsThirty-four patients were prospectively enrolled in this study. The degrees of muscle atrophy and fat infiltration were measured using ultrasonography 3–4 months after arthroscopic supraspinatus tendon repair. Shoulder function (i.e., shoulder active range of motion, visual analogue scale, and constant score) was examined. Using the symmetricity of the muscles in the human body, the degrees of morphological changes of the supraspinatus muscle were quantitatively measured. The associations between the morphological changes of the supraspinatus muscle and shoulder function were identified.ResultsThere were statistically significant differences in the cross-sectional area (CSA) and echogenicity between the surgery and non-surgery sides (p<0.001). The CSA ratio, which represents the degree of muscle atrophy, was associated with shoulder forward flexion, external rotation, and constant score; however, the echogenicity ratio, which represents the degree of fat infiltration, was not associated with shoulder function after surgery.ConclusionThis study demonstrated that shoulder function could be predicted by evaluating the morphological changes of the supraspinatus muscle using ultrasonography and that objective evaluation is possible through quantitative measurement using the symmetricity of the human body
Intercultural Usage of Mori Folium: Comparison Review from a Korean Medical Perspective
Objectives. A review on studies related to the use of Mori folium, the leaves of Morus alba, was conducted with the goal of identifying new clinical applications in Korean medicine. Methods. Global literature search was conducted using three electronic databases up to January 2015 with the term Morus alba and its Korean terms. KM literatures including textbooks and standard pharmacopoeia were separately hand-searched and reviewed to provide comparison. Data were extracted according to predetermined criteria, and clinical uses were standardized with ICD-10 categories. Results. 159 potentially relevant studies were identified, and 18 articles including 12 ethnopharmacologic and 6 clinical studies were finally included in this analysis. Ethnopharmacologic studies from 8 countries provided 17 clinical uses. We found that five out of six clinical trials were related to diabetes and suggested a moderate short-term to mild long-term effect. And 43 Korean texts also provided 156 clinical uses in 35 categories including ocular and respiratory disorders. Discussion and Conclusions. Though majority of the clinical uses were also found in Korean medicine literature, treatment of infertility, jaundice, cognitive disorder, and hyperpigmentation was found to be effective and diabetes with Morus alba was recognized to have clinical importance

Misorientation-angle-dependent electrical transport across molybdenum disulfide grain boundaries
Grain boundaries in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have unique atomic defect structures and band dispersion relations that depend on the inter-domain misorientation angle. Here, we explore misorientation angle-dependent electrical transport at grain boundaries in monolayer MoS2 by correlating the atomic defect structures of measured devices analysed with transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that grain boundaries are primarily composed of 5–7 dislocation cores with periodicity and additional complex defects formed at high angles, obeying the classical low-angle theory for angles <22°. The inter-domain mobility is minimized for angles <9° and increases nonlinearly by two orders of magnitude before saturating at ∼16 cm2 V−1 s−1 around misorientation angle≈20°. This trend is explained via grain-boundary electrostatic barriers estimated from density functional calculations and experimental tunnelling barrier heights, which are ≈0.5 eV at low angles and ≈0.15 eV at high angles (≥20°)
Association between Positional Dependency and Obstruction Site in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
ObjectivesThe purpose of this study is to find out associations between positional dependency and obstructive levels based on sleep videofluoroscopy (SVF) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).MethodsRetrospective review was made of 91 OSAS patients who underwent polysomnography and SVF from August 2009 through June 2010. Polysomnography variables including apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), supine AHI, non-supine AHI, time spent in supine sleep position of the total sleep time and positional dependency (PD) were analyzed. Obstruction sites were evaluated as SVF variables.ResultsOf 91 patients, 65 (71.4%) were positional patients (PP) and 26 (28.6%) were non-positional patients (NPP). An analysis of polysomnography variables according to PD revealed that overall AHI, non-supine AHI and supine AHI in PP was significantly lower than that in NPP. The patients with soft palate obstruction (SP type) were more likely to have PD than the patients with tongue base obstruction (TB type; P=0.046). PD was inversely related to OSAS severity significantly (P=0.001).ConclusionThese results provide evidence that positional dependent patients may have higher success rate of soft palate OSA surgery alone than non-positional dependent patients. Although PD may be associated with obstruction site, PD only itself may not be useful in planning surgical treatment for OSAS
Distinct populations of highly potent TAU seed conformers in rapidly progressing Alzheimer's disease
Although genetic factors play a main role in determining the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD), they do not explain extensive spectrum of clinicopathological phenotypes. Deposits of aggregated TAU proteins are one of the main predictors of cognitive decline in AD. We investigated the hypothesis that variabilities in AD progression could be due to diverse structural assemblies (strains) of TAU protein. Using sensitive biophysical methods in 40 patients with AD and markedly different disease durations, we identified populations of distinct TAU particles that differed in size, structural organization, and replication rate in vitro and in cell assay. The rapidly replicating, distinctly misfolded TAU conformers found in rapidly progressive AD were composed of ~80% misfolded four-repeat (4R) TAU and ~20% of misfolded 3R TAU isoform with the same conformational signatures. These biophysical observations suggest that distinctly misfolded population of 4R TAU conformers drive the rapid decline in AD and imply that effective therapeutic strategies might need to consider not a singular species but a cloud of differently misfolded TAU conformers
