    Probing resonance decays to two visible and multiple invisible particles

    We consider the decay of a generic resonance to two visible particles and any number of invisible particles. We show that the shape of the invariant mass distribution of the two visible particles is sensitive to both the mass spectrum of the new particles, as well as the decay topology. We provide the analytical formulas describing the invariant mass shapes for the nine simplest topologies (with up to two invisible particles in the final state). Any such distribution can be simply categorized by its endpoint, peak location and curvature, which are typically sufficient to discriminate among the competing topologies. In each case, we list the effective mass parameters which can be measured by experiment.     Mechanical Properties of Surface-Charged Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) as Denture Resins

    The aim of this study was to examine the mechanical properties of a new surface-modified denture resin for its suitability as denture base material. This experimental resin is made by copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a negative charge. Four experimental groups consisted of Orthodontic Dental Resin (DENTSPLY Caulk) as a control and three groups of modified PMMA (mPMMA) produced at differing ratios of methacrylic acid (5 : 95, 10 : 90, and 20 : 80 MA : MMA). A 3-point flexural test using the Instron Universal Testing Machine (Instron Corp.) measured force-deflection curves and a complete stress versus strain history to calculate the transverse strength, transverse deflection, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity. Analysis of Variance and Scheffe Post-test were performed on the data. Resins with increased methacrylic acid content exhibited lower strength values for the measured physical properties. The most significant decrease occurred as the methacrylic acid content was increased to 20% mPMMA. No significant differences at P < .05 were found in all parameters tested between the Control and 5% mPMMA

    The Role of Online Learning in Radiographic Diagnosis in Dental Education

    The purpose of the pilot study was to investigate whether an interactive online module improved third-year dental students’ radiographic caries diagnosis abilities and conceptual understanding. Third year dental students were given online tutoring modules and assessed afterward to determine whether their diagnostic skills improved, whether they perceived and improvement in their diagnostic skills, and whether following the modules with interactive group discussions was a more effective teaching method. The choice to use the module was left to each individual. Thirty-one students completed an assessment consisting of three full-mouth series (FMX) radiographs of varying number and severity of carious lesions first individually and then in teams. Performance was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. A T-test analysis revealed that the students who accessed the module did not perform significantly better than students who did not access the module; however, a χ2-test showed that students who accessed the module correctly diagnosed yet over- and under-diagnosed more frequently. Survey responses showed that students believed the module helped clarify lecture topics. The online radiographic caries diagnosis module has introduced a promising and beneficial adjunctive resource for dental students

    Impact of a Longitudinal Lecture Series on Pre-dental Student Recruitment

    The expanding number of dental schools has not resulted in a rise in dental school applications; therefore, there is a need to identify and retain pre-dental students in the applicant pool. One way to do this is to introduce an outreach program by dental schools. A limited number of studies have been done on the impact of outreach programs on dental school recruitment.This study was done to examine the effectiveness of an outreach program initiated at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). Third- and fourth-year dental students provided 12 hours of lectures, two hours of case-based learning, and two hours of hands-on laboratory experience to pre-dental students over 12 weeks in a course called Introduction to Dentistry. The course was given in 2015 and 2016 and the participants were surveyed before and after the course to determine their interest in and knowledge of dentistry, and their attitude toward HSDM. After the course, pre-dental students had better understanding of the dental profession overall, were more comfortable conversing about dentistry, and were more likely to apply to HSDM in the future.Dental outreach programs can maintain or increase interest in applicants who were previously interested in applying to dental school; however, admissions committees must carefully consider an applicant’s entire academic and personal background. Participation in an outreach program is not an indication of an applicant’s overall suitability for dentistry in general or for a particular dental school’s program

    Developing Self-Assessment Skills in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations

    Introduction: The purpose of the study was to describe the integration of self-assessments into the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as a part of reflective practice in clinical education. An emphasis was placed on the process of student learning to complement the existing comprehensive patient care assessment model.Methods: Student self-assessment data was captured three times throughout patient care experiences during the clinical education period and measured against corresponding faculty assessments of students at these times in the predoctoral dental program.Results: Analysis revealed that there were some disciplines in which faculty and student assessments were moderately reliable; however, as students progressed through the clinical program, their overall self-assessments did not have a higher correlation with faculty assessments.Conclusion: The OSCE can be designed as a useful tool in measuring non-traditional competencies and provide an opportunity for students to self-assess their learning. However, further emphasis on self-assessment skills for students needs to be incorporated as they progress through clinical programs

    Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in a community-based population : a potential role in adult-onset asthma

    Background: Recent studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin sensitization is a risk factor for asthma. However, there is a paucity of epidemiologic evidence on adult-onset asthma in community-based populations. Objective: We sought to evaluate the epidemiology and the clinical significance of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in community-based adult populations. Methods: The present analyses were performed using the baseline data set of Korean adult population surveys, consisting of 1080 adults (mean age=60.2years) recruited from an urban and a rural community. Questionnaires, methacholine challenge tests, and allergen skin tests were performed for defining clinical phenotypes. Sera were analysed for total IgE and enterotoxin-specific IgE using ImmunoCAP. Results: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization (0.35kU/L) had a prevalence of 27.0%. Risk factors were identified as male sex, current smoking, advanced age (61years), and inhalant allergen sensitization. Current asthma was mostly adult onset (18years old) and showed independent associations with high enterotoxin-specific IgE levels in multivariate logistic regression tests. In multivariate linear regressions, staphylococcal enterotoxin-specific IgE level was identified as the major determinant factor for total IgE level. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization was independently associated with adult-onset asthma in adult community populations. Strong correlations between the enterotoxin-specific IgE and total IgE levels support the clinical significance. The present findings warrant further studies for the precise roles of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in the asthma pathogenesis
