Electronic and optical properties of beryllium chalcogenides/silicon heterostructures

We have calculated electronic and optical properties of Si/BeSe0.41_{0.41}Te0.59_{0.59} heterostructures by a semiempirical sp3ssp^{3}s^{*} tight-binding method. Tight-binding parameters and band bowing of BeSe0.41_{0.41}Te0.59_{0.59} are considered through a recent model for highly mismatched semiconductor alloys. The band bowing and the measurements of conduction band offset lead to a type II heterostucture for Si/BeSe0.41_{0.41}Te0.59_{0.59} with conduction band minimum in the Si layer and valence band maximum in the BeSe0.41_{0.41}Te0.59_{0.59} layer. The electronic structure and optical properties of various (Si2)n_{2})_{n }/(BeSe0.41_{0.41}Te0.59)m_{0.59})_{m} [001] superlattices have been considered. Two bands of interface states were found within the bandgap of bulk Si. Our calculations indicate that the optical edges are below the fundamental bandgap of bulk Si and the transitions are optically allowed.Comment: 16 pager, 7 figure

The smallest refrigerators can reach maximal efficiency

We investigate whether size imposes a fundamental constraint on the efficiency of small thermal machines. We analyse in detail a model of a small self-contained refrigerator consisting of three qubits. We show analytically that this system can reach the Carnot efficiency, thus demonstrating that there exists no complementarity between size and efficiency.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. v2: published versio

The Ithaca Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

    Get PDF
I list several strong requirements for what I would consider a sensible interpretation of quantum mechanics and I discuss two simple theorems. One, as far as I know, is new; the other was only noted a few years ago. Both have important implications for such a sensible interpretation. My talk will not clear everything up; indeed, you may conclude that it has not cleared anything up. But I hope it will provide a different perspective from which to view some old and vexing puzzles (or, if you believe nothing needs to be cleared up, some ancient verities.)Comment: 21 pages, plain TEX. The foundations of statistical mechanics from entanglement: Individual states vs. averages

We consider an alternative approach to the foundations of statistical mechanics, in which subjective randomness, ensemble-averaging or time-averaging are not required. Instead, the universe (i.e. the system together with a sufficiently large environment) is in a quantum pure state subject to a global constraint, and thermalisation results from entanglement between system and environment. We formulate and prove a "General Canonical Principle", which states that the system will be thermalised for almost all pure states of the universe, and provide rigorous quantitative bounds using Levy's Lemma.Comment: 12 pages, v3 title changed, v2 minor change

Epitaxial lithium niobate thin films grown by chemical beam epitaxy on sapphire

    No full text
Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) is a versatile material with a number of remarkable qualities. It finds application in optical modulators because of its electro-optic properties. Nonlinearity opens its use in bio-physical applications where particles or wires of LiNbO3 can be used as highly localized optical probes. Optical frequency conversion is another possible use, as well. One of the current commercial applications of the material is in optical modulators in telecomunication devices. Nowadays bulk crystals of the material are used. However, in order to make devices more compact and affordable it is necessary to be able to produce LiNbO3 films on suitable substrates with sufficient crystalline and optical quality

AB and Berry phases for a quantum cloud of charge

We investigate the phase accumulated by a charged particle in an extended quantum state as it encircles one or more magnetic fluxons, each carrying half a flux unit. A simple, essentially topological analysis reveals an interplay between the Aharonov-Bohm phase and Berry's phase.Comment: 10 pages, TAUP 2110-93. Te

Enhancement of de Haas-van Alphen Oscillation due to Spin in the Magnetic Breakdown System

The effects of the Zeeman term on the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation is studied in the magnetic breakdown system. We find that the amplitude of the oscillation with the frequencies of fβ+fαf_{\beta} + f_{\alpha} and fβ+2fαf_{\beta} + 2f_{\alpha} are enhanced by the Zeeman term, while they are expected to be reduced in the semiclassical theory. A possible interpretation of the experiments in organic conductors is discussed.Comment: 4 pages,4 figures. Submitted to Journal of Physical Society of Japa

Purification of Noisy Entanglement and Faithful Teleportation via Noisy Channels

Two separated observers, by applying local operations to a supply of not-too-impure entangled states ({\em e.g.} singlets shared through a noisy channel), can prepare a smaller number of entangled pairs of arbitrarily high purity ({\em e.g.} near-perfect singlets). These can then be used to faithfully teleport unknown quantum states from one observer to the other, thereby achieving faithful transfrom one observer to the other, thereby achieving faithful transmission of quantum information through a noisy channel. We give upper and lower bounds on the yield D(M)D(M) of pure singlets (Ψ\ket{\Psi^-}) distillable from mixed states MM, showing D(M)>0D(M)>0 if \bra{\Psi^-}M\ket{\Psi^-}>\half.Comment: 4 pages (revtex) plus 1 figure (postscript). Jamming non-local quantum correlations

    Get PDF
We present a possible scheme to tamper with non-local quantum correlations in a way that is consistent with relativistic causality, but goes beyond quantum mechanics. A non-local ``jamming" mechanism, operating within a certain space-time window, would not violate relativistic causality and would not lead to contradictory causal loops. The results presented in this Letter do not depend on any model of how quantum correlations arise and apply to any jamming mechanism.Comment: 10 pp, LaTe

Are all noisy quantum states obtained from pure ones?

    Get PDF
We ask what type of mixed quantum states can arise when a number of separated parties start by sharing a pure quantum state and then this pure state becomes contaminated by noise. We show that not all mixed states arise in this way. This is even the case if the separated parties actively try to degrade their initial pure state by arbitrary local actions and classical communication.Comment: 3 pages, no figure
