The diamond model of open access publishing: Why policy makers, scholars, universities, libraries, labour unions and the publishing world need to take non-commercial, non-profit open access serious
This reflection introduces a new term to the debate on open access publishing: diamond open access (DOA) publishing. The debate on open access is a debate about the future of academia. We discuss the problems of for-profit academic publishing, such as monopoly prices and access inequalities and point at the limits of contemporary perspectives on open access as they are frequently advanced by the publishing industry, policy makers and labour unions. The article introduces a public service and commons perspective that stresses the importance of fostering and publicly supporting what we term the model of diamond open access. It is a non-profit academic publishing model that makes academic knowledge a common good, reclaims the common character of the academic system and entails the possibility for fostering job security by creating public service publishing jobs. Existing concepts such as “gold open access” have serious conceptual limits that can be overcome by introducing the new term of diamond open access. The debate on open access lacks visions and requires social innovations. This article is a policy intervention and reflection on current issues related to open access (OA) publishing. It reflects on the following questions: What should the role of open access be in the future of academic publishing and academia? How should the future of academic publishing and academia look like? Which reforms of academic policy making are needed in relation to open access publishing? We want to trigger a new level of the open access debate. We invite further reflections on these questions by academics, policy makers, publishers, publishing workers, labour unions, open access publishing associations, editors and librarians

Positivism, postmodernism, or critical theory? A case study of communications students’ understandings of criticism
Neoliberalism has resulted in a large-scale economization and capitalization of society that has also permeated the academic system. The paper at hand provides the result of a case study that analyzed how students, who are today frequently confronted by the combination of studying and precarious labour and insecure job perspectives, assess the importance of critical thinking. As a theoretical foundation, a distinction between positivistic, postmodern, and Marxian critique is drawn and discussed. Students of communication science at the University of Salzburg were asked to read a focus text by Herbert Marcuse that deals with the notion of critique and to write short essays afterwards, in order to reflect on the notion of critique that is needed today. 52 answer texts were analyzed by the method of quantifying qualitative content analysis. The results show the predominance of a positivistic understanding of critique and provide implications for curricula design and pedagogical action

Towards a critical theory of alternative media.
In this contribution, we warn against being too optimistic about the actual democratic effects of notions like "civil media", ”community media” "alternative media", "grassroots media", "participatory media", or "participatory culture". We argue that in contemporary society, which is characterized by structural inequalities, an understanding of alternative media as participatory media is insufficient. As an alternative concept, we suggest the notion of alternative media as critical media. This concept is grounded in critical social theory. A typology of approaches for defining alternative media is constructed. We argue that
alternative media need to be situated in the context of visions of an alternative society
Metabolic Effects of Bariatric Surgery in Mouse Models of Circadian Disruption
Background/Objectives:
Mounting evidence supports a link between circadian disruption and metabolic disease. Humans with circadian disruption (for example, night-shift workers) have an increased risk of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases compared with the non-disrupted population. However, it is unclear whether the obesity and obesity-related disorders associated with circadian disruption respond to therapeutic treatments as well as individuals with other types of obesity. Subjects/Methods:
Here, we test the effectiveness of the commonly used bariatric surgical procedure, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), in mouse models of genetic and environmental circadian disruption. Results:
VSG led to a reduction in body weight and fat mass in both ClockΔ19 mutant and constant-light mouse models (PP\u3e0.05). Within circadian-disrupted models, VSG also led to improved glucose tolerance and lipid handling (P\u3c0.05). Conclusions:
Together these data demonstrate that VSG is an effective treatment for the obesity associated with circadian disruption, and that the potent effects of bariatric surgery are orthogonal to circadian biology. However, as the effects of bariatric surgery are independent of circadian disruption, VSG cannot be considered a cure for circadian disruption. These data have important implications for circadian-disrupted obese patients. Moreover, these results reveal new information about the metabolic pathways governing the effects of bariatric surgery as well as of circadian disruption
Characterization of Ascaris from Ecuador and Zanzibar
To shed light on the epidemiology of ascariasis in Ecuador and Zanzibar, 177 adult worms retrieved by chemo-expulsion from either people or pigs were collected, measured and subjected to polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Upon double digestion with RsaI and HaeIII, PCR-RFLP analysis revealed the presence of A. lumbricoides in people and A. suum in pigs in Ecuador. In contrast, while there are no pigs on Zanzibar, of the 56 worms obtained from people, one was genotyped as A. suum. No additional genetic variation was detected upon further PCR-RFLP analysis with several other restriction enzymes. Upon measurement, worm mass and length differed by location and by species, A. suum being lighter and longer. While there is no evidence to suggest zoonotic transmission in Ecuador, an enduring historical signature of previous zoonotic transmission remains on Zanzibar
Three approaches for the classification of protoneutron star oscillation modes
The future detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from a galactic
core-collapse supernova will provide information on the physics inside
protoneutron stars (PNS). In this work, we apply three different classification
methods for the PNS non-radial oscillation modes: Cowling classification,
Generalized Cowling Nomenclature (GCN), and a Classification Based on Modal
Properties (CBMP). Using PNS models from D simulations of core-collapse
supernovae, we find that in the early stages of the PNS evolution, typically
before seconds after the bounce, the Cowling classification is
inconsistent, but the GCN and the CBMP provide complementary information that
helps to understand the evolution of the modes. In the GCN, we note several
avoided crossings as the mode frequencies evolve at early times, while the CBMP
tracks the modes across the avoided crossings. We verify that the strongest
emission of GWs by the PNS corresponds to the -mode in the GCN, indicating
that the mode trapping region alternates between the core and the envelope at
each avoided crossing. At later times, approximately seconds after the
bounce, the three classification methods present a similar description of the
mode spectrum. We use our results to test universal relations for the PNS modes
according to their classification and find that the behaviour of the universal
relations for - and -modes is remarkably simple in the CBMP.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Matches the version accepted on MNRA
New Cataclysmic Variables and other Exotic Binaries in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae
We present 22 new (+3 confirmed) cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the non
core-collapsed globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc). The total number of CVs in
the cluster is now 43, the largest sample in any globular cluster so far. For
the identifications we used near-ultraviolet (NUV) and optical images from the
Hubble Space Telescope, in combination with X-ray results from the Chandra
X-ray Observatory. This allowed us to build the deepest NUV CV luminosity
function of the cluster to date. We found that the CVs in 47 Tuc are more
concentrated towards the cluster center than the main sequence turnoff stars.
We compared our results to the CV populations of the core-collapsed globular
clusters NGC 6397 and NGC 6752. We found that 47 Tuc has fewer bright CVs per
unit mass than those two other clusters. That suggests that dynamical
interactions in core-collapsed clusters play a major role creating new CVs. In
47 Tuc, the CV population is probably dominated by primordial and old
dynamically formed systems. We estimated that the CVs in 47 Tuc have total
masses of approx. 1.4 M_sun. We also found that the X-ray luminosity function
of the CVs in the three clusters is bimodal. Additionally, we discuss a
possible double degenerate system and an intriguing/unclassified object.
Finally, we present four systems that could be millisecond pulsar companions
given their X-ray and NUV/optical colors. For one of them we present very
strong evidence for being an ablated companion. The other three could be CO- or
