Characterizing the variation of propagation constants in multicore fibre
We demonstrate a numerical technique that can evaluate the core-to-core
variations in propagation constant in multicore fibre. Using a Markov Chain
Monte Carlo process, we replicate the interference patterns of light that has
coupled between the cores during propagation. We describe the algorithm and
verify its operation by successfully reconstructing target propagation
constants in a fictional fibre. Then we carry out a reconstruction of the
propagation constants in a real fibre containing 37 single-mode cores. We find
that the range of fractional propagation constant variation across the cores is
approximately .Comment: 17 pages; preprint format; 5 figures. Submitted to Optics Expres

In silicio expression analysis of PKS genes isolated from Cannabis sativa L.
Cannabinoids, flavonoids, and stilbenoids have been identified in the annual dioecious plant Cannabis sativa L. Of these, the cannabinoids are the best known group of this plant's natural products. Polyketide synthases (PKSs) are responsible for the biosynthesis of diverse secondary metabolites, including flavonoids and stilbenoids. Biosynthetically, the cannabinoids are polyketide substituted with terpenoid moiety. Using an RT-PCR homology search, PKS cDNAs were isolated from cannabis plants. The deduced amino acid sequences showed 51%-73% identity to other CHS/STS type sequences of the PKS family. Further, phylogenetic analysis revealed that these PKS cDNAs grouped with other non-chalcone-producing PKSs. Homology modeling analysis of these cannabis PKSs predicts a 3D overall fold, similar to alfalfa CHS2, with small steric differences on the residues that shape the active site of the cannabis PKSs
Anisotropic 2D diffusive expansion of ultra-cold atoms in a disordered potential
We study the horizontal expansion of vertically confined ultra-cold atoms in
the presence of disorder. Vertical confinement allows us to realize a situation
with a few coupled harmonic oscillator quantum states. The disordered potential
is created by an optical speckle at an angle of 30{\deg} with respect to the
horizontal plane, resulting in an effective anisotropy of the correlation
lengths of a factor of 2 in that plane. We observe diffusion leading to
non-Gaussian density profiles. Diffusion coefficients, extracted from the
experimental results, show anisotropy and strong energy dependence, in
agreement with numerical calculations
