3D-XY critical fluctuations of the thermal expansivity in detwinned YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystals near optimal doping
The strong coupling of superconductivity to the orthorhombic distortion in
YBa2Cu3O7-d makes possible an analysis of the superconducting fluctuations
without the necessity of subtracting any background. The present
high-resolution capacitance dilatometry data unambiguously demonstrate the
existence of critical, instead of Gaussian, fluctuations over a wide
temperature region (+/- 10 K) around Tc. The values of the amplitude ratio
A+/A-=0.9-1.1 and the leading scaling exponent |alpha|<0.018, determined via a
least-squares fit of the data, are consistent with the 3D-XY universality
class. Small deviations from pure 3D-XY behavior are discussed.Comment: 11 pages including three figure
Autogenic-feedback training as a treatment for airsickness in high-performance military aircraft: Two case studies
The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed description of the physiological and performance responses of two military pilots undergoing a treatment for motion sickness. The treatment used, Autogenic-Feedback Training (AFT), is an operant conditioning procedure where subjects are taught to control several of their autonomic responses and thereby suppress their motion sickness symptoms. Two male, active duty military pilots (U.S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps), ages 30 and 35, were each given twelve 30-minute training sessions. The primary criterion for success of training was the subject's ability to tolerate rotating chair motion sickness tests for progressively longer periods of time and at higher rotational velocities. A standardized diagnostic scale was used during motion sickness to assess changes in the subject's perceived malaise. Physiological data were obtained from one pilot during tactical maneuvers in an F-18 aircraft after completion of his training. A significant increase in tolerance to laboratory-induced motion sickness tests and a reduction in autonomic nervous system (ANS) response variability was observed for both subjects after training. Both pilots were successful in applying AFT for controlling their airsickness during subsequent qualification tests on F-18 and T-38 aircraft and were returned to active duty flight status
Denying renal transplantation to an adolescent medical cannabis user: An ethical case study
Medical cannabis is now legal in over half of the United States. As more patients adopt this unconventional therapy, it is inevitable that potential transplant recipients will disclose their cannabis use during transplant evaluation. Transplant teams are tasked with the decision to utilize a pressure resource, often with little guidance from international and national professional organizations. Many healthcare providers remain uniformed or misinformed about the risks of cannabis use and organ transplantation. In order to illustrate the multifaceted and complex evaluation of transplant patients using medical cannabis, this article presents the case of a 20‐year‐old woman recommended for renal transplant who was originally denied active listing due to her medical cannabis use. A review of the literature explores the perceived and actual risks of cannabis use in the immunocompromised patient. Furthermore, a discussion of the ethics of medical cannabis use and organ transplantation is included with recommendations for multidisciplinary transplant teams.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/150568/1/petr13467.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/150568/2/petr13467_am.pd
High-intensity focused ultrasound with visually directed power adjustment for focal treatment of localized prostate cancer: systematic review and meta-analysis
Purpose:
To characterize patient outcomes following visually directed high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for focal treatment of localized prostate cancer.
//
Methods:
We performed a systematic review of cancer-control outcomes and complication rates among men with localized prostate cancer treated with visually directed focal HIFU. Study outcomes were calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis model.
//
Results:
A total of 8 observational studies with 1,819 patients (median age 67 years; prostate-specific antigen 7.1 mg/ml; prostate volume 36 ml) followed over a median of 24 months were included. The mean prostate-specific antigen nadir following visually directed focal HIFU was 2.2 ng/ml (95% CI 0.9–3.5 ng/ml), achieved after a median of 6 months post-treatment. A clinically significant positive biopsy was identified in 19.8% (95% CI 12.4–28.3%) of cases. Salvage treatment rates were 16.2% (95% CI 9.7–23.8%) for focal- or whole-gland treatment, and 8.6% (95% CI 6.1–11.5%) for whole-gland treatment. Complication rates were 16.7% (95% CI 9.9–24.6%) for de novo erectile dysfunction, 6.2% (95% CI 0.0–19.0%) for urinary retention, 3.0% (95% CI 2.1–3.9%) for urinary tract infection, 1.9% (95% CI 0.1–5.3%) for urinary incontinence, and 0.1% (95% CI 0.0–1.4%) for bowel injury.
//
Conclusion:
Limited evidence from eight observational studies demonstrated that visually directed HIFU for focal treatment of localized prostate cancer was associated with a relatively low risk of complications and acceptable cancer control over medium-term follow-up. Comparative, long-term safety and effectiveness results with visually directed focal HIFU are lacking

Effect of rhPDGF-BB Delivery on Mediators of Periodontal Wound Repair
Growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) exert potent effects on wound healing including the regeneration of tooth-supporting structures. This investigation examined the effect of the local delivery of PDGF-BB when combined with reconstructive periodontal surgery on local wound fluid (WF) levels of PDGF-AB, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and bone collagen telopeptide (ICTP) in humans with advanced periodontitis. Sixteen patients exhibiting localized periodontal osseous defects were randomized to one of three groups (β-TCP carrier alone, β-TCP + 0.3 mg/mL of recombinant human PDGF-BB [rhPDGF-BB], or β-TCP + 1.0 mg/mL of rhPDGF-BB) and monitored for 6 months. WF was harvested and analyzed for PDGF-AB, VEGF, and ICTP WF levels. Teeth contralateral to the target lesions served as controls. Increased levels of VEGF in the WF was observed for all surgical treatment groups with the 1.0 mg/mL rhPDGF-BB group showing the most pronounced difference at 3 weeks in the AUC analysis versus control (p < 0.0001). PDGF-AB WF levels were increased for the carrier alone group compared to both rhPDGFBB groups. Low-dose rhPDGF-BB application elicited increases in ICTP at days 3–5 in the wound healing process, suggesting a promotion of bone turnover at early stages of the repair process (p < 0.02). These results demonstrate contrasting inducible expression patterns of PDGF-AB, VEGF, and ICTP during periodontal wound healing in humans.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63257/1/ten.2006.12.1441.pd

Coral development: from classical embryology to molecular control
The phylum Cnidaria is the closest outgroup to the triploblastic metazoans and as such offers unique insights into evolutionary questions at several levels. In the post-genomic era, a knowledge of the gene complement of representative cnidarians will be important for understanding the relationship between the expansion of gene families and the evolution of morphological complexity among more highly evolved metazoans. Studies of cnidarian development and its molecular control will provide information about the origins of the major bilaterian body axes, the origin of the third tissue layer, the mesoderm, and the evolution of nervous system patterning. We are studying the cnidarian Acropora millepora, a reef building scleractinian coral, and a member of the basal cnidarian class, the Anthozoa. We review ourwork on descriptive embryology and studies of selected transcription factor gene families, where our knowledge from Acropora is particularly advanced relative to other cnidarians. We also describe a recent preliminary whole genome initiative, a coral EST database.Eldon E. Ball, David C. Hayward, John S. Reece-Hoyes, Nikki R. Hislop, Gabrielle Samuel, Robert Saint, Peter L.
