The road beyond 5G:a vision and insight of the key technologies
Abstract
As 5G enters a stable phase in terms of system architecture, 3GPP Release 17 starts to investigate advanced features that would shape the evolution toward 6G. This paper provides an insightful analysis for mobile networks Beyond 5G (B5G) considering the advancements and implications introduced by the evolution of softwarization, agile control and deterministic services. It elaborates the 5G landscape, also investigating new business prospects and the emerging use cases, which will open new horizons for accelerating the market penetration of vertical services. It then overviews the key technologies that constitute the pillars for the evolution beyond 5G considering new radio paradigms, micro-service oriented core network, native IP based user plane, network analytics and the support of the low latency- high reliability transport layer. The open challenges considering both technical and business aspects are then overviewed, elaborating the footprint of softwarization, security and trust as well as distributed architectures and services toward 6G
A service-based architecture for enabling UAV enhanced network services
Abstract
This article provides an overview of enhanced network services, while emphasizing the role of UAVs as core network equipment with radio and backhaul capabilities. Initially, we elaborate the various deployment options, focusing on UAVs as airborne radio, backhaul and core network equipment, pointing out the benefits and limitations. We then analyze the required enhancements in the SBA to support UAV services including UAV navigation and air traffic management, weather forecasting and UAV connectivity management. The use of airborne UAVs network services is assessed via qualitative means, considering the impact on vehicular applications. Finally, an evaluation has been conducted via a testbed implementation, to explore the performance of UAVs as edge cloud nodes, hosting an ACS function responsible for the control and orchestration of a UAV fleet
Edge cloud resource-aware flight planning for unmanned aerial vehicles
Abstract
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can offer a plethora of applications, provided that the appropriate ground control and complementary computing and storage services are available in close proximity. To accomplish this, edge cloud platforms, deployed at or close to the base stations, are essential. However, current UAV travel planning does not take into account the resource constraints of such edge cloud platforms. This paper introduces an aligned process for UAV flight planning and networking resource allocation, minimizing the total traveled distance. It proposes two solutions, namely (i) a Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC)-Aware UAVs’ Path planning (MAUP) based on integer linear programming and (ii) an Accelerated MAUP (AMAUP), i.e., a heuristic and scalable approach that adopts the shortest weighted path algorithm considering directed graphs. The performance of the two solutions are evaluated using computer-based simulations and the obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the two solutions in achieving their design goals
On SDN-driven network optimization and QoS aware routing using multiple paths
Abstract
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a driving technology for enabling the 5th Generation of mobile communication (5G) systems offering enhanced network management features and softwarization. This paper concentrates on reducing the operating expenditure (OPEX) costs while i) increasing the quality of service (QoS) by leveraging the benefits of queuing and multi-path forwarding in OpenFlow, ii) allowing an operator with an SDN-enabled network to efficiently allocate the network resources considering mobility, and iii) reducing or even eliminating the need for over-provisioning. For achieving these objectives, a QoS aware network configuration and multipath forwarding approach is introduced that efficiently manages the operation of SDN enabled open virtual switches (OVSs). This paper proposes and evaluates three solutions that exploit the strength of QoS aware routing using multiple paths. While the two first solutions provide optimal and approximate optimal configurations, respectively, using linear integer programming optimization, the third one is a heuristic that uses Dijkstra short-path algorithm. The obtained results demonstrate the performance of the proposed solutions in terms of OPEX and execution time
On multi-domain network slicing orchestration architecture and federated resource control
Abstract
A sophisticated and efficient network slicing architecture is needed to support the orchestration of network slices across multiple administrative domains. Such multi-domain architecture shall be agnostic of the underlying virtualization and network infrastructure technologies. Its objective is to extend the traditional orchestration, management and control capabilities by means of models and constructs in order to form a well-stitched composition of network slices. To facilitate such a composition of networking and compute/storage resources, this article introduces a management and orchestration architecture that incorporates Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) components to the basic 3GPP network slice management. The proposed architecture is broadly divided into four major strata, namely the Multi-domain Service Conductor Stratum, Domain-specific Fully- Fledged Orchestration Stratum, Sub-Domain MANO and Connectivity Stratum, and Logical Multi-domain Slice Instance stratum. Each of these strata is described in detail, providing the fundamental operational specifics for instantiating and managing the resulting federated network slices
